A Moth Proof Papeb. A moth prcof paper is made from a mixture of woolen, cotton, end hempen waste; it is .then saturated with a miztureof crude carbolic acid, heated thin coal tar, and the residual oil from the rectification of naptba. The paper is then pressed and dried, and served to wrap up abides liable to be datntg'd by moths. Crackers axd Cream. Split six Boston crackers, place them in a aoup plats and pour boiling water over them. As soon as they are soft draw off all the water and sprinkle lightly with salt; the a pour over them nice sweet cream. This is specially liked by Utile children who are not feeling well, and usually relished by growiDg peo pie, too. Excellent Coffee Recipe Dr. Foote'e Health Mouihly say 9: "Stir into the ground coffee sufficient white of egg to m&ke a smooth pa-t;; add the proper quantity, by measure, of ooiline water, ana let it boil gently far 20 or 30 minutes. Made thus It is exquisitely clear and transparent, the coagulated aloumen holding -every finest particle of solid matter." Bap.ley Water To a tablespoonfal of pearl barley, washed in cold watt r, add two or three lumps of sugar and the juice of half a lemon. On these pour one quart of bolliDg water, and let it stand seven or eight hours; strain; never use the barley a second time. Half an onnce of isinglass may be boiled in tbe water. Increase the sugar if denrable. For fevers or weak stomachs a strengthening drink. v Eice Blanc Mange. Farina or arrowroot may be prepared in the same way, omitting tae eggs and second boiling. Lrttp is Stabch ob Gravy. How true it is that, if we observe and remember, we can learn something of every one we meet A few days ago I learned from the poore-t housekeeper X know something new to me that salt added to the Hour before the water, on stirring paste for starch or gravy, would prevent tae it ur from forming in lamps. Of course, fused to salt both gravy and starch, but I never observed tbe good resul s of adding the salt first. Docghstts One cup of soft yeast, one cup cf warm sweet milk; one cup of sboitenmg half butter and half lard; one cup cf sugar, two well-beaten eegs. onc-Ualf tea spoonful of salt; flavor with nutmeg, all spice or cinnamon. Knead all together, ttt in a warm (lace it cigat; in tbe morning, if light, knead agiio; roll about twe-thirds of an inch thick; cut out in cakes a little larger than a silver dollar; let them rise; then fry ia !ard and roll in pulverized sugar.
Farm Motes. Between incendiaries, lightning and accident. Indiana county, Pa., farmers lost $25,000 worth ot barns inside of three months. Our own hands are Heaven's favorite instruments for supplying us with the nects saries and luxuries of life. A little dry sand covered over potatoes when they are first put into the cellar, w U destroy any unpleasant odor they may have A sprinkling of dry air-slacked lime will mitigate a tendency to rot. R. M. Williams, of West Bratlleboro, Vt.. has a Cot-wold- buck which weighs 22fi pounds. His fl-eca this year weighed 12 pound?, and some of the wool was ni. 9 inches in length. So says the Record and Farmer. A few rubbing posts set up in a pasture will save injury to tbe fence. Cattle wil use these conveniences very often If provided for tneni, and it is worth a'l the trouble to witness the enjoyment of the animals in their use. Two young men oat riding were pasting a farta bousa wbere a farmer .was trying to harness a raule. "Won't he draw?'' said one of the horsemen. "Of course he will," said the farmer; "he draws the at'ention of every fool that passes this way." The young men drove on. Tbe poorest lands we have cn be made to yield paying crops by tbe liberal use of t bote natural fertilizers wuich are within reach of tbe poorest fa-mer, U be will but exert himself to obt tin t lem. This talk of worthless lands is foolish it is. the owner and not the land that is worthless. Probably tbe very best way to protect wheat in the bins fotn tbe weevil is to thoroughly fumigate tbe bins with burning sulphur. This should bs done before tbe grain is put into tbe bins, and repeated in tbe 1 coursed anion'h or so alter tbe grain is stored. JSome persons use lime and salt, but there is nothing better than sulphur. The yield of mik and butter in the sum mer depoods greatly upon winter feeding. All the fe d given to cows is not c 3D turned without return. Tbe manure gives a god dividend upon the outlay, and the animals are storing up energy and strength to be made, available a t-rward. The aintr ia the season for liberal and judicious feeding, end not for "rbort commons," which it but, another term for half starvation. Fifteen cows allowed to stand out one hour on a cold day, shrunk in milk nine quart; ic ciid water given to a cow will brink the milk; cows allowed to sand in the water on a hot day will a so shrink thtir milk. Cows never should be allowed to ttod in a draft. A to id careful man placed in charge of a badly, man aged herd of ca't'e, has increased tbe flow of milk to an extent sufficient to pay his wages. Patting sa t on the hay mow ua useless practice; in this case it has no curative propertiea . It pays now above all other timet of the year to lake care of tbe poultry. See that the houses ere warm Sae that their drinking water does not remain frozsn over P ur kerosene over the perches. Clean oat the neu and supply them with e'etn s'raw Duet sulphar in tbe nests. 8apply tbeai with- 8ittl coal ashes and Sana tor dus'tng baths. Give them green food of some kind daily Give them sweet food it mat-era less wbst kind than that they get a variety, This is the way to make "winter layers." Shell Tour Cora on the Farm. , ' (Rural New Yorker. ' There is no better base for compost than leaf-mould ot the forest. All the dead animals of the farm, the refuse brine and vegetables, the leached ashes, the woolen rags, feathers of the slaughtered hens, and hair of the slaughterea hogs, should be scrupulously added to tbe compost heap.' If, on entering the'v'llage grocery, you smell old brine or putrid fish, offer the merchant to take the nuisance off his hands. They will make a valuable addition to the compost. If there is a woolen or paper mill or a tannery in the vicinity, these establishments will fur nlsh much refuse for composting. Hay for Hogs. Few men are aware of the fact that hay is very beneficial to brg, but it is true, never the less. Hogs med rough food as well as h(rjea, cattle or the buoian race. To prepare it you should have a cutting box or bay cutter, and the greener tbe bay the better Cat tbe bay as shoit as oats, or shorter, ard mix
with bran shorts or middlings, and feed as other food. Ho;a soon liarn to like it, and, if soaked in swill as other slop foad, is highly relished by them. In winter use for the hogs the same hay you feed to your horses, and you will find tiat, while it saves bran, shorts, or other food, ic puts on flesh as rap idly as anything that can be given them. Tbe use of bay can be commenced as early as the grass will dot) cut, and when ran tiroughthe cutting bsx can be used t3 advantage by simply soaking ia fresh water until it sours. Charcoal for Fowls. I New YorkHerald. An old turkey raiser gives tne following experiment: Four turkeys were fed on meal, boiled potatoes and oats. Four others of the same brood were also, at the same time"; confined in another pen and fed daily on tbe ssrue article, but with one pint of very finely pulverized charcjal mixed with their food mixed meal and boiled potatoes. They had alto a plentiful supply of charcoal in their pen. The eight were killed on the same dty, and there was a different' 5 of one and one-half pounds eecti in favor of tbe fowls which had been supplied with charcoal, tbey being much the fat est, and the meat b9ing rently superior in point of tenderness and flavor. . Tar For WartsA farmer, writing to an exchange, says: "I had a mare some years ago that had a large wart on- her side, wbere tbe harness rubbed and kept it sore. In summer tbe flies made it worse. To prevent this I put on a good daub of tar, and in a few weeks the wart was killed and disappeared. I have frequently tried it since on cat la and horses, and seldom bed an occasion t use a second apn'io'ion. Tbe remedy is simple and effectual." Feed Roots in Winter. Tbe large quantities of dry, woody and indigestible food consumed by stock in winter tax the digestive orgins vtry severely, and constipation, cong-stion. etc, are ever threatening dangers to the health of the stock. A moderate quantity of roots or green food ia the season of dry feed acta as beneficia ly on the stock as fruit and fresh vegetables do on tbe human system in tbe cnurse of the long, coid season, when no perspiration purges the skin. In the season (f verdure and plant growing fresh vegetable food is so common a portion of oar daily diet that we scarcely notice tbe fact. And to it is with the animals whose care we are charged with. Breeding-vrgrkeys. t American Stockman. There is no branch of the poultry business that yields so Write a profit, if properly managed, as turkey-raising; yet breed"ers rarely undertake it without a feeling of uncertainty as to success, There are many different varieties, and each one has strong advocates; tbe bronze is very popular, 00 account cf its s ze and baauty, and especially from the fact of its being a native of America, From a trio of bealtby turkeys of almost, any breed qui e a large flock can be raised in a single season, care being used as to food and general treatment There are a few rules that will da to follow closely in turkey breeding; a good one is never te allow young turkeyp, not comfortably clad in feathers, to run out while tbe dew is on the grata; for a chill, however s ight, is most sure to be fatal. During tbe day, they should be allowed ' to roam, for 'urkeya cm not bear confinement, bat.l ug before nightfall pen them up in a roomy coop, altar a liberal allowance of food as much as tbey will eat, and no more for to leave food lying about in reach of the brood, to grow stale and sour, will always result in feeble, and -raized birds, if tney survive tiie treatment s,t all. Tbey are fond of milk, and should be regularly given it if con venient; chopped oniona, bread crumbe, corn bread, cheese curd", or almost any clean. sweet food will insure hea't iso far as feeding can pos-uMy do. The business of Indianapolis during the past week has been exceedingly good in all branches cf commerce, and quotations, with but a very few exceptions, have been veil maintained. Tbe wheat market has been fluctuating to some extent, but owing to the light receipts the market, as V general rale, has been firm, with a heavy local milling demand. The market to-day was strenz at the ad vanoe. There Is a decidedly strong tone to the corn market, with an active demand at an advance of about c, with numerous speculative orders to buy for future delivery. Markets elsewhere are also better, and the seaboard Ho to ae hleher. There is a bri-i demand for oats, ' and prices are higher. Flour is in good demand at quotations. The provision market has been been bobbing about considerable since our last weekly reView, and to-day the market was somewhat excited and higher. The demand for both staple and fancy dry goods has been good daring the entire week, and values are ex oeedicgly well maintained. Groceries are also in good request at steady figures. Drags are reported quiet and steady. Other articles are In eood demand. The receipts of country produce are fairly liberal, and the demand for all kinds of pioduce is good.
