BBPt7BLICA2 REPUDIATION.
An Offset Against the Idiotic Bowl About : Southern Repudiation. JSC Louis Post-Dispatch. It is a week since we presented tbe startling figures about Republican repudiation; since we showed minutely that 17 counties and fife cities and towns in the great State ol Illinois have rerused, and still refuse, to pay interest on their debt, aggregating $3,517,000; that 16 different counties and nine towns of Republican Kansas have repudiated, have refused, and still refuse, to pay tbe interest 6n tbeir debt, which aggre Stea the BOtu'of $5,547,000; that Republican innesota has utterly repudiated millions of State debt, with which It built it railroads; that the first repudiation in tbe Southern States took place by Republican or carpet bag governments. : But there has been no . refutation, correc tion or aoccessfut contradiction of our facts and figures, though many of the Republican papers Indulged in a good deal of abuse and adjectives. ,-'.. The Globe-Democrat, for instance, entered into a labored defense of Illinois, by snowing that one of the 17 repudiating counties in Illinois was Democratic. Bnt it did not say one syllable about Kansas, and its eloquent Hence gave reluctant but unmistakable asaeuii mj uie inueieneiouiiy oi uie cuss ui loyal Kansas. But the Quincy "Whig, a lively Republican journal, grows especially angry and ill-man ered about our allusion to the repudiation in the South by Republican carpet-baggara. It says tbat "in no other way conld any Democratic organ have made a finer display either of 'partisan malignity' or of 'hopeless ignorance.' " Well, let us see.' There is a very stalwart and prominent Republican partisan. He is a member of the cabinet and. without exaggeration, one of the most influential men in the party. This Republican leader made a speech in this city a few years ago which contained the .following: A system of robbery and ruinous governmAntAnsnMl vhlnh has hapillo a napulliil In history. Most of those (Southern) Slates were, with incredible rapidity, burdened with enormous debt without auy equivalent. Bcores of millions disappeared ax If oy magic. In the capacious dnrkues of private pockets Impoverished as those States were by war, they were now stripped naked. Production diiniuished, and Incredible as it may seem, while the rest of the country was progressing prosperously, the value of real property lu many of t nose -States appeared iu the oenbus of 1S70. after Ave years of peace, far below the figures In the census of VW. Such have been tbe effects of so-called carpet-bag govern mentln the South. Who was responsible for thlb? Those governments were and are carried on in the name and under the auspices of the Republican party. - The name of the speaker? It was Carl 8cburz Republican secretary of the interior and Republican stump speaker in Ohio. And the broad fact which we showed in detail a week ago, and which has Dot and can not be contradicted, is this: That 47 different counties and towns lu Republican Illinois and Kansas (22 in Illinois and 23 in Kansas) have repudiated and still repudiate an aggregate of $14,000,000. (Republican papers please copy.) v Stonewall Jackson's Daughter. I Baltimore Gazette. When the Jackson statue was unveiled In Richmond some years ago, after the procession and the oratory, Governer Kemper brought forward upon the platform a slender little girl, and. addressing the great crowd of old Confederate soldiers, said: "Comrades, let me present to you tbe daughter of Stonewall Jackson." Somehow the tearssprang to every eye at the flight of this delicate child of tbeir resistless leader. There was no cheering, but every face showed a deep emotion. Ever since that time a tender and poetic interest has clung to this little lady, and there are many thousands who care to know of her well being. She has recently arrived in this city, under tbe care of her mother, who never loses sight of her, and who brings her here to school. She has been entered at the Southern Home school, 107 and 199 North Charles street, Mrs. W. M. Cary and Mrs. John Pegram, principals. They are at present staying with Mrs. Hugh Lee, at 118 Paul street. Miss Julia Jsckson is about 1G years old, tall, slender and graceful. Sue is a blonde, with fresh color and fair hair. Her eyes are of exquisite clear gray, large and expressive. Her manners are gentle, but not shy or reserved. There is not any marked resemblance to her Illustrious father, and she seems hardly conscious of the distinction that she eojoys and of the romantic nterest that she carries with her. When his "bsst girl" leaves horns for a boarding school she promises to write faithfully, be true as steel and all that sort of nonsense. The first letter is a nice long one, breathing the very essence of affectionate tenderness, aud is signed "exclusively your own darling;" after about six weeks, when the young men from their neighboring academy have made their opening calls, she drops him a no:e enthusiastically describing tbe particular student that she has fancied, signing it "inclusively yours, etc." He begins to feel a little queer, all tbe time ex pecting that "delusively yours" will soon be coming; but it never comes. The correspondence is finished. Two girls belonging to a church choir iu Los Angeles, Cal.,got locked in tbe church the other night while they were talking over the fashions. Tbey gave the alarm, when a man living near tbe church put a board up to the window and they slid down to the ground. The most singular thing was that after tbey bad got safely to the ground they looked mad and went off without thanking the man, and they wont speak to him when they meet him. He couldn't account for it until he went to take the board down,' when he eot slivers in his fingers and scratched his thumb on a shingle nail that stuck through the board. John Bull thinks when it comes down to . fighting, the Afghans are all wool and a yard .wide. ,. ' ' Woman's Wisdom. "She insists that is more importance, tbat lier family shall be kept in full health, than that she should have all the fashionable 'dresses and styles of the times. 6 tie there fore sees to it that each member of her fam ily is supplied with enough Hop Bitters, at tbe first appearance of any symptoms of ill health, to prevent a fit of sickness, with Its attendant expense, care and anxiety. All women should exercise their wisdom in this way." CjO.. - - Do not stupify your baby with Opium or Morphia mixtures, but use Dr. Bun's Baby Svrnn which is aiwavs safe and reliable and never disappoints. 25c "They can not all lie," was the observation of one while reading the endleas testimonials to "Dr. Lindaey's Blood Searcher."
