U i i?. Vk TKtXE INCIDENT, iii "Whlcli Suggested to tbe Founder of the Rational Surgical Institute the Idea Upon Whicbit is Based. The following incident is taken from our morning co temporary, and shows what apparently small circumstances" mould, and direct the career of men: $ j j f "Meeting jkomceB. Allen, manager of the Indianapolis Su-gical Institute, at, his residence on orth. Meridian' street-one, evening joBt previous tc his recent departure for Arizona, a reporter asked him what first suggested the idea of establishing a Surgical Institute. The doctor hesitated to talk upon the subject, evidently fearing the conversation might find its way into tbe newspapers. But upon receiving an implied promise (with a mental reservation) that the talk should be considered confidential, he finally began the story here in substance related: Years ago it is unnecessary to state how many I was connected with "one of the Eastern medical hospitals, which one I will . not tell you. It stood, high in the roll of American institutions of its class. Cripples and invalids were brought there for treatment from all over the country. One day a bright, beautiful child, a sweet little girl, perhaps eight years old, was brought by her mother for treatment. Her trouble was a diseased condition of the spine, such as we are treating every day in the year at the institute in this city, and its blanches. - The mother left her pet child at tbe hospital, after taking a most affectionate farewell. She had assured the superintended that money was no object, if the child could be cured. . Spurred on by this incentive, and another found in the fact that tbe patents of the deformed child were not oaly wealthy, but influential, the surgeoDS ro doubt did their best. , They applied all the remedies known .o science then nd recognized by the code under which Ihey practiced. But the child' did lot improve. Constitutionally it was losing ground daily. The treatment was too harsh lor its tender organization. It was losing lean. The mother wrote frequently inquiring as to the condition of her child. E vasi ve answers were returned to her letters. She wanted to visit the little sufferer,' but was prohibited, on the ground that Undue excitement would ' retard progress toward ultimate recovery. In 'the meantime tbe poor, frail little creature was begging to be taken home and away from the tortures she was being subjected to. Finally, about five months from the date of the child's reception at the Hospital, the mother came, determined to see her child at all hazards. The surgeons objected, but she overcame their objections by boldly entering the ward in which she knew her child was confined. She passed through the ward until a thin, quivering little voice began crying, "Mamma, mamma, Oh, mamma!" She looked around, saw the puny, shriveled body from which the words came, but for a moment could not recognize it as that of her plump, rosy-cheeked darling of five months before. An instant later the mother's instinct prevailed, and she caught the child in her arms. I happened to be in the ward at the time, and shall never forget the expression of that lady's countenance as she turned upon tbe surgeon in charge. ' ''Doctor," said she, "is this all there is left of my child?' ""Yes, madam. The case proved to be a very obstinate one. ' We have used every remedy known to the profession but one, without the usual and in this case particularly desired result" . r ''And what is that other remedy, may I ask?" . . -v - "It is the moxa. madam."

"With a look which the tigress at bay might be expected to put on, were she human, and a voice quivering with emotion, tne laay started up: "You shall torture my child no longer. Come, we will eo home." She caught up the child herself, carried it to her carnage, leaving the surgeons chopfallen, and possibly for the moment ais eusted with their callirjg. This incident, said the doctor, set me to thinking. Is such treatment as tnis child has received here the best that human erenius can invent or discover for cases of this kind? v If it is, I am sorry I have chosen medicine and Buicery as my profes sion. It set me thinking, and in course of time the idea came to me that treatment by mechanical appliances, -with very little or no medicine at all, might be made to supersede the seton and hot iron. I at once beean exercising what inventive genius I pos sessed, and from that action has sprung the establishment down at the corner of Georgia and Illinois streets, and three large branches located at San Francisco, Cal. ; Atlanta, Ga., and FhiladelDhia. At the home institution here, we have treated between 10,000 and 12,000 cases, brought from all parts of the Western continent. Many of these have been cured and others greatly benefited. In all of these cases we have never yet had a death while engaged in a surgical operation or from the use of anaesthetics. We use nearly 300 of the mechanical appliances here mentioned, all of which are manufactured in this city. But the ; best of it all is, I have seen the little sufferer in the Eastern Hospital, of whom I can show you a plaster cast at the institute, cured of her deformity. She is now residing in Ohio, a healthy and no doubt a happy woman." Testimony to the Food Cure System, , . As practiced by Dr. Blanchard, is coming from many of the most eminent of the medical profession, as well as tbe numerous invalids that bave been benefited by the concentrated liquid foods that are the specialties of the Blanchard Kood Cure Company, 27 Union Square, New York. Dr. Egbert Gurnsey, one of the most eminent physicians of the city, says that from the n radical tests he has eiven the Blanchard Foods he believes they will prove of great value to the invalid, and should be indorsed by the whole medical profession. There is no doubt that Dr. Blanchard's re search and practical demonstration of the curative effects of food elements is destined to work a great change In the medical prac tice, and be the. means of restoring health and happiness to many invalids now vainly seeking health through the drug system.
