Some Carious Studies . in "Regard , to tlie , Association xit idea. The operation a of ft man's mind furnish him. by day and by night at home and Bbroad an immense field for curio tis investigation. No one can have ft just idea before he baa carefully experimented upon himself of the crowd of unheeded, half-thoughts and faint imaginations that flit through his brain, and of the influence they exert upon his conscious life. A contributor to the Nineteenth Century describes a few of the reBU1UI Vi UUI VWf OCM-VAaUllUHMWU aial V spect to associated ideas as follows: "It was ftav mam-ir mmnr trtala that nno f t o rnrmn T Mwt, auuuj " - - fnl mvoAlf in a hnmni f nr thA Tvnli.r Anil somewhat severe mental effort that was renurred to car-TV throueh a sufficiently rroJ myself during a walk from the Atheneum : club, London, along Pall Mall to St. James . . - j : e t -z r 1 i . n . . . ing a half glance on what went on in my mind as I , looked with .intent scrntinv at the successive . objects that caught my eye.- The instant a new idea arose it was absolutely dismissed, and another was allowed to occupy its place. I never permitted my. mind to ramble into ; anv hc.nfl tha hnt ntript.1-7 limited its wnrlr " tion with the several objects that I saw. The ideas were, therefore, too neetjng to memory. Nevertheless, I retailed enough of t amount of work my brain had per- " formed. I was aware that my mind had traveled during that brief walk in the most discursive manner throughout the experiences of my whole life; that it had en- ' tered as an habitual guest into numberless localities that it had certat nl v never visited under the light of full consciousness for many years; and, in short, I inferred that my everyday brain work was incomparably more active, and that my ideas traveled . far wider afield than I had previously any came intensely stimulated to try further experiments, and, as a first commence- - ment of them, to repeat the walk under similar circumstances. I purposely allowed ' a few days to elapse before doing so, during wnicn 1 ;resoiuteiy reiusea to aiiow my ,, thoughts to revert to what had taken place, ' in order that I might undergo the repetition of the trial with as fresh a mind as possible. Again 1 iook tne wan, sna again i was aware of the vast number of extremely faint . thoughts that had arisen; but I was surprised and somewhat humiliated to find that a large proportion of them were identical with those that had occurred on the previous occasion. I was satisfied that their recurrence had in only a very few caes been due to mere recollection. They seemed for the most part to be founded on associations so long and firmly established, that their recurrence might be expected in a future trial, when these past experiments should have wholly disappeared from the memory. It now became my objcet to seize upon thtsj fleeting, ideas before they had wholly escaped, to record and analjze tnem, ana so to ODtain a aennite mow1 .3 n 1 ..v......... 4L. a--. .. of their recurrence, and such other collateral information as the experiments might afford. The plan I adopted was to suddenly display a printed word, to allow about a couple of ideas to successively present themselves, and then, by a violent mental revulsion and - sririripn awflkAnin?nf attention to fiAizannnn . those ideas before they had faded, and to ' record them exactly as they were at the moment when thev were surmised and era Doled with. , It was an attempt like that of Menelaus, in the Odyssey, to constrain the eltuive form of Proteus. The experiment admits of being conducted with perfect fairness. The mind can be brought into a qui ecent state, Dlank, but intent; the word can be displayed without disturbing that state; the ideas will then present themselves naturally, and the sudden revulsion follows almost automatically. Though I st y it ia . perfectly possible to do all this, I must in fairness add that it is the most fatiguing and distasteful mental experience that I have ever undergone. Its irksomeness arises from . several independenfcausea. The chief of these is the endeavor to vivify an impression that UgiUJ JUBIr ItSlb, IUU MJ UHUJ 1. UUb IXUIU ODScnnry into ine iuuugnioi consciousness. . The exertion is akin to that of trying to recall ft name that j ust, and only j ust, escapes ms; u sometimes seems as though the brain would break down if the effort were persevered in, and there is a sense of immense relief when we are content to abandon the search, and to await tbe chance of the name occurring to us ot its own accord through some accidental association. Additional exertion and much resolution are rerequired, in carrying on the experiment, to maintain the form of the ideas strictly unaltered while they aie vivified, as they ' have a strong tendency to a rapid growth. . both in definition and completeness. It is important in this, as in all other similar - cases, to describe in detail the way in which the experiments were conduced, l pro . cured a short vocabulary of words and laid it open by my side. I then put a book upon it in such a way that it did not cover tha word that was about to be displayed, though its edge hid it from my view when I sat a little backward in - my chair. By leaning forward, the . word came into sight. I also took many prevent any omer oojeci oesiaes tne wora catching my attention and distracting the thoughts. Before I began the experiment I nut mvseii into an easy uoauuuu, wiui a pea in mv right hand resting on a memorandum : book, and with a watch that marked quarter seconds in my left hand, which was started - bv pressing on a stop, and continued going mntilthe pressure -was released. This was a little contrivance of my own appended to one of Benson's common chronographs. When I felt myself perfectly in repose, with my mind 1 blank, but intent. I gently leant forward and read the word, simultaneously pres-ing the stop of the watch. Then I allowed but s couple of ideas to present themselves, and immediately afterward released the scop nit vmrntmMt nnvr Af atrAntiin trt appreciate with accuracy what had taken - niam anrt thin I mmrtMiI at nnM. - I At I 1 : wrote down at leisure the word that had been displayed, and the time shown ' by the chronograph to have ; been occnDied br - tbe '- experiment. The number of words need in the ex periments is 75, which had been gone through, as described, on lour separate occa sions, at intervals of about ft month. The . 75 words made a total of 300 separate trials and gave rise between them to 505 ideas in the space of 660 seconds. There were, how ' ever, so many cases of recurrence that the number of different ideas proved to be only 279. Twenty-nine of tha words gave rise to the same thought in every one of tha four trials, 36 to the same thought ia three out of the four trials, 57 to two out of the four. and ' there were only 167 ideas that occurred no more than once. Thus we see how great is the tendency to the recurrence of the same Ideas. It is conspicuous in the reiteration of anneedotes by 1 old people, but it prevades all periods of life to a greater extent than is commonly under- '- stood, the mind habitually rambling along i tbe same trite pauis. l nave neen mucn struck by this tact in the successive editions, so to speak, of the narrative of explorers in wild countries. Letters are in the first instance received from the traveler while still pursuing his journey; then some colonial newspaper records his first publie account of it on his re-entry into civilised lands; then we bear his " tale from his own lips, in conversation in England: then comes his memoir read be fore the society; then numerous public speeches, and lastly his book. I am almost invariably struck with the sameness of exJ irinsinn and anecdote in all of these perormsnces. Now on woald expect that con pie of years or more spent n strange lands among strange people would hare
filled the mind of the traveler with a practically inexhaustible collision ot thoughts and tableaux; but no, tha recollections tend to group themselves into a comparative small number of separate compositions or episodes, and whatever does not fic artistically into these is neglected and finally dropped. We recollect very few of the incidents in our youth, though perhaps in old 'age we shall think very frequently of that little.. Let any man try to write his autobiography btween the ages of five and six, and he will find that he has exhausted everything be can recollect of that period in a very few pages. Let him meet, for the first time after
many years, with some mend of his boy- - hood, and talk over some interesting event which his recollection is so vivid that tie believes he can have forgotten none of .ite incidents. He will assuredly find, if .his. experience at ail resemble my own that he and his friend have retained very different versions of the same occurrence, that in each case persons who had played an impor tant part in it had entirely dropped from the memory, and that the conversation will have recalled many facts to both the speak ers that had almost passed into oblivion. We recollect the memories of incidents, or the memories of those memories, rather than the incidents themselves, and the original anecdote in the well-known game of 'Russian scandal' receives successive modifications at each step until it is strangely condensed and transformed." "What is in the Itedroom. If two persons are to occupy a bedroom during a night, let them step upon a weigh ing scales as they retire and - then again in the morning, and they will find their actual weight is at least a pound less in the morn ing, jt reouentiy there will be a loss oi two or more pounds, and the average loss throughout the vear will be more than a pound that is, during the night there is a loss of a pound of matter which has gone off from their bodies, partly from the lungs and partly through the pores of the skin. The escaped material is carbonic acid and decayed animal matter for poisonous exhalations. This is diffused through the air in part, and in part absorbed by the bed clothes. If a single ounce of wool or cotton be burned in a room, it will so com pletely saturate the air with smoke that one can hardly Dreatne, though there can only be an ounce of foreign matter in the air. If an ounce of cotton be burned every half hour during the nignt, tne air win te kept continually satur ated with the smoke unless there be an open door or window for it to escape. Now the 16 ounces of smoke thus formed is far less poisonous than the 16 ounces of exhal ation from the lungs and bodies of the two persons who have lost a pound in weight during the eight hours of sleeping, for while the dry smoke is mainly taken into the lungs, the .damp odors from the body are absorbed into the lungs, and into the whole body. jNeed more be raid to show the importance of having oed rooms well ventilated, and thoroughly airiDg the sheets, coverlets, and mattresses in the morning, before packing them up in tbe form of a neatly made bed .' seven-years' convict in the Massachu setts State prison was drawn to serve as a juror in the superior court, Boston, last week.
