HOUSE CLEANING.
Tie Coming Spring Campaign ThA Care of Carpets. ; Good and Bad Methods f Scrubbing, Cleaning, and Putting the House -' , in Order. Philadelphia Sunday Times. There is a story of a clever sharper who, wishing to replenish his funds, advertised, for a small consideration, to furnish applicants, by mall, with the secret of success in all their undertakings.. The dupes who Bent him money received in return a card with the motto: "Begin in time and keep at it until you get done." The advice, though hardly worth baying as a talisman, is nevertheless good doctrine on many occasions, and on none more so than that of house cleaning. LacJuof method, which is the soul of management, has done much to render the annual purification of the household the error of the masculine portion of the family. Every one knows that painters, paperhangers and white-washers are persons who re fuse to be quietly smuggled into and out of a house. Where their presence is necessary they make it felt, and it must be endured like other disagreeable remedies. But it is not often that the whole of a house has to be renovated in a single season, and the ordinary house cleaning may be easily managed so that the gentlemen of the family will scarce ly be aware that anything unusual is goiDg on. Take one room at a time, beginning at the top cf the house and work down finish ing as you so. Ia this way the whole house will never be upset at once, and the dirt will not be trodden back and forth upstairs. THS PLACE OF BEG LS MSG. - To clean a room thoroughly the carpet must be taken up, the pictures, blinds and curtains taken down and well cleaned and dusted. The furniture must all be moved from aeainst the walls, the paper must be brushed with a broom covered with a soft cloth, the paint must be washed, the grates blackened, the floor scrubbed, the carpet beaten, and the furniture polished. If the room is a bedroom, the bedsteads must be taken to pieces and well cleaned. This should always be done early in the season. First wash every joint and slat of the bed with common turpentine soap or, better till, with carbolic s:ap. Then dust every part with insect powder. Powder the seams of the mattress, and air the bed and bed clothing thoroughly. Sun them also out of doors, if you can though in town this is not always possible. Nail boles and crevices in the bedsteads can be filled up with putty well packed in. or with mercurial ointment, which last is preferred to all other insect destroyers by many good housewives. If vermin have made their appearance, examine the bed every two or three days during the next moath, and use insect powder freely. If their presence ia suspected in the walls, dust with insect powder around the washboard, and fill the cracks Detween it and the lloor with cjmmoa yellow soap pressed in with a knife. In moving into an old house which has been carelessly kept, it will sometimes be found that one paper has been laid on over another until two, three, or perhaps halt a dozan thicknesses are on the wall. In this mass the vermin easily harbor. The remedy in such a case is to tear off the paper entirely and whitewash or paint the walls. HOW TO CLEA3T CAB PETS. If the carpet is to be taken up and beaten, the job had better be intrusted to some man who makes it his business. It this can not be done, lay it on the grass or hang it on a clothes line and beat it on the wrong side with canes taking care that the canes have no sharp points. Xben spread the carpetout and sweep well on the right side. There is more art in sweeping a carpet than a novice ia apt to suppose. An old broom should never be used, and a newone should be kept especially for the carpets With Brussels and velvet carpeting there are two ways to the pile, just as in velvet, and they should always be swept with the pile. It a carpet is swept against thi grain it soon looks rough and scratched up. After beings wept and laid down on the floor, the carpet should be wiped. Have two pails, oue ot clean soaps ad the other with lukewarm water, a clean flannel cloth and two coarse, clean towels. Take the carpet by breadths, wring the flannel out of the lukewarm water and ho'd it so that you can turn and use it up and - down three or four times on the same place. Rub both with and against the train as hard as if you were scrubbing the floor, then throw the flannel into your soapsuds and rub the carpet dry with one of your dry towels. If vou leave the carpet wet the dust 'will stick to it and it will smell sour and musty. Wash your flannel clean in the soapsuds, wring it out of the warm water and proceed as before. If the carpet is very dirty or has much green in it use fresh ox gall in the ' luke-warm water in the proportion to a quart of gall to three quarts of water and rub the carpet dry as already directed. This rubbing a carpet rises the pile and freshens the colors. " THE KISD OF BBU6SELS TO SELECT. Choose 4for long weir a Brussels carpet where the pattern is small, as the carrying of the threads of the different colors to the back of the carpet strengthens the material and makes it wear better. Ingrain carpets need to be shaken of tener than Brussels, as from their more open texture the dust percolates through them. It is rarely necessary to take up a Brussels carpet more than every two or three years, and not so often even wheie the room is not in constant use. Sweeping on the floor answers every purDose for removing the dust. It is a mistaken idea to cover a carpet with drugget in the belief that it saves it What wears out car pets is the grinding on the floor, and the protection should come from beneath. Moth proof carpet lining is best, but sev eral thicknesses ot newspaper comes next as a carpet preserver. The printer's ink is an excellent moth preventive, and the newspapers keep the carpet from rubbine on the boards. On stairs use stair pads and have half a yard more carpeting than you need in order that you may be able to turn the carpet upiide down and change the positions of the places where the edge of the steps make a mark. When your carpet is new leave It 'uncoveted and put down your stair oil-cloth after it begins ; to show wear. Linen over carpet ia the ammer is both cool and pleasant, besides it helps to keep away motbs These little Bests must be looked for behind furniture and in out of the way corners. Loosen the edges of the carpet and give them a plenti ful sprinkling ot insect powder. It you find a woth-nest kill all you can and then Dress the spot with a hot iron through cloth wrung cut in hot water; this will de stroy the eggs. WASHING OIL CLOTH AND PORCELAIN TILES. Oil cloth should be well scrubbed with brush. Many people are afraid to use a brush to it, thinking that it scrubs off the paint; but, as there is always an nneven surface on oil cloth, nothing but a brush gets oat the dirt. The chief thing to remember is to dry it bit by bit, and not to leave a large portion of it wet, because it stands to reason that, as oil cloth is made of cloth, or eanyan or old carpets as a foundation, and the pattern painted on it it will blister if left wet. Use hot water ad yellow soap,
no soda. Have a half a ysrd bf clean flannel
to wash off the toap after it has been scrubbed. Scrub about a, yard at a time, and them wash it ' off,- and dry' thoroughly with a clean coarse cloth. Change the water three times in cleaning a long hall. It takes two dry cloths to rub it dry. After the whole surface is cleaned, polish with beeswax and turpentine, with a piece of flannel to rub it on with, and another clean piece to rub after. Or a little linseed oil is a good thing instead of beeswax and turpentine. Never cover a boarded floor entirely with oil cloth, because it rots the boards and causes dry rot. Never use it in a hureery; it is the Boldest thing, and most unhealthy, for children to sit on worse than eton. would be. Whitening, used for cleaning windows with a flannel or chamois skin, is better for cleaning paint than either soap or soda. It is a good plan to keep a pot ot paint of the pre railing tint of the wood-work in the house on hand', and use whenever the paint is knocked off, as it often is by expressmen handling trunks, or by careless servants and children. AJI ENGLISH BECIPK. - . The following is an English recipe for cleaning the porcelain tiles now so fashionable in this country, as well as in England, for flooring halls and for other decorative Eurpsses: Have two buckets of water, one ot, the other cold. Use yellow soap, no soda, a hard scrubbing brush, a clean flannel and two rough towels. You can not be too careful to guard against the least dirty or greasy thing near tiles; therefore, always" use a new or clean flannel, and keep a separate brush for the purpose. Soft soap or sand are bad for tiles the former creases, the latter scratches; but a little fuller's earth put into the water is very good. You can get fuller's earth in lumps from a paint shop. Wet the tiles well first, and tben scrub with a good lather of yellow soap; only scrub as far as your arm can reach. You must thoroughly wash off the soap with the hot water, then with cold water, then rub the piece you have washed with a clean dry cloth ; you must rnb it perftctly dry or it will look greasy. Then go on to another piece of the tiling and do just the same; if you will observe the rules given, the tiles will look perfectly clean. After you have quite finished (and of course the buckets of water must be constantly renewed), a little milk or salad oil should be rubbed all over the tiles with a soft old towel; use yery little, and leave it on. To polish furniture, wash it with a soft cloth and lukewarm water, using toilet soap. Then rub with coal oil, or with linseed oil and spirits of turpentine, and polish with flannel or chamois ski a. Hard rubbing is the best polish for furniture. CUBTAIHS AND BLIKSS. Winter curtains which are to be laid aside during the summer should be shaken, brushed, folded smoothly and put away with dry wheat bran spread between the folds. This will brighten and freshen the colors. All woolen goods should have cum carophor sprinkled among them and be locked up in an air-tight chest. sua before laying away. To clean Venetian blinds unfasten the tape at the bottom of the blind and draw out all the laths. Wash them with lukewarm water and toilet soap, dry them thoroughly and put them up again, taking care tbat the ords which come down in the middle of the taped are put in properly, as unless this is done the tapes will fray. Strong soap must never be used on fine furniture, as it injaras the color of the wood.. Food 111 Digested Imperfectly nourishes the system, since It is ouly partially assimilated by the blood. Pale, haggard mortals, with dyspeptic stomachs, impoverished circrlatioa and weak nerves, experience a marked and rapid improvement In their physical condition by availing themselves of that sure reseurce of the sick: and debilitated. Hostetter's Stomach Bitters. This genial tonic and alterative lends an Impetus to the processes of digestion, which Insures an adequate development of the materials of Blood, iiDcr ana muscmar tissue. Moreover, It soothes and strengthens overwrought or weak nerves, counteracts a tendency to hypochondria or despondency, to which dyspeptic and billons persons arc peculiarly liable, and is an agreeable and wholesome appetizer and promoter of repose. The infi rmlties of age, and of delicate female constitutions, are greatly relleved by it; and it is a reliable preventive of, and remedy for, malarial fevers. Food Is not always something to eat, but is, in the case we refer to, a concentrated liquid ex tract from the exterior of the wheat kernel, that it taken a naif teaspoon tul after each meal builds up the whole system, overcomes sleeplessness, and makes the old young again. See advertisement of the Blanchard Blood and Nerve Food. Thousands suffer without knowing (be na ture of this almost universal complaint. It s an ulceration of the head. Its indications are, hawking, spitting, V7eak Inflamed eyes, frequent soreness of the throat, dryness and heat of the nose, matter running from the head down the throat, often ringing or deafness in the ears, loss of smell, memory Impaired, dullness and dizziness of the head, often in the first stages, but more commonly In its advan ced stages, attended with pains in chest or. left side, and under the sdoulAer blades. Indiges tion usually attends Catarrh ; a hacking cough and colds are very common, some, have ail these symptoms, others only a part. Very lit tle pain attends Catarrh until the liver and the lungs are attacked in consequence of the stream of pollution runnin g from the head Into the stomach. ... ... All persons thus affected takecold easily and have frequently a running at the nostrils; the breath sometimes reveals to all aronnd tne corruption within, while the patient nag frequently lost ail sense of smell. The disease advances covertly, until pala in the chest, lungs or bowels startles him; he hacks and coughs, has dyspepsia, liver complaint, and is urged by his doctor to take this or that; per haps cod liver oil is prescribed. Perfectly ridiculous! The foul ulcers in the head cannot be reached by pouring such stuff into the poor, laded stomach. The patient becomes nervous, the voice is harsh and unnatural, he feels disheartened, memory loses her power, Judgment her zeal, gloomy forebodings hang overhead; hundreds, yes, thousands in such circumstances, feel that to die would be a re lief, and many even do cut the thread of life to end their sorrows.
