AT THE BEDSIDE.
O mothers whose children are sleeping. Thank God by their pillow to-n:gnt; And pmy for tlie mothers now weeping O'er pillow? too smooth and too while, Where orient little heads tt have lain. And soft little cheeks have been pressed; O mother who know not ihis pain. Take courage and and bear ail the rest ! for the sombre-winged angel is going With pitiless fiiishto'er the land. And we wake in tlie morn, never knowing What he. ere ihe nisht raav demand: Yes, to-night while our darlings are sleeping. There's many a soft little bed, Whose pillows are moistened with weeping For the loss of one little dear head. There are hearts on whose Innermost altar There is nothing hat ashen, to-night: There are voices whose tones sadly falter. And dim eyes that shrink from th light; O mothers whose children are sleeping, As ye bend to caress the fair heads, Pray for the mothers now weeping OVr pitiful, smooth little beds. STATE INTELLIGENCE. Brazil had a $2,500 fire on Saturday. Franklin sinners are being waked up. Madison is going to have an Opera Mouse. Franklin is said to be the boss city to sell lottery tickets In. There are now 2,000 logs in the Pdtoka river, above Jasper, waiting for a rise. The Wabash Plaindealer has been sold to Messrs. Keaten and Stanley, of Chicago. . Eli Wells and family, living at Paris Crossing, were seriously poisoned, on Saturday, by drinking water from a cistern. Columbus Democrat: It is now said that not only the peaches, bnt the peach trees have been killed by the late hard winter. W. J. Cassy, auditor of Gibson county; who lived at Fatoka, and was re-elected at the last election, died at his home Saturday night, after a short illness. George E. Sailors, of Frankfort, has been arrested on the charge cf seduction aod bastarday, at the instance of Miss Aiitfca Teller, and in default of $500 bail was committed. Columbus Republican: Yesterday the first barrel of mineral water was shipped from the Sand Creek mineral springs. The barrel contained 45 gallons and was sent to Seymour. John Harris, a brakeman on the Louisville, Kew Albany and Chicago road, was crushed between two cars in the yard of the road at Lafayette, on Sunday, and very severely injured. The excitement continues at Martinsville i over the murder or natural death of Rid cliff. It is thought by many that Reynolds is the victim o circumstances, and that Radcliff died or heart diseas:. T. II. Miiler, of Lifayette, used the rod oa a son of Levi Brant, and the latter has begun proceediEirs against Miller for assault, asking $1,000 dacuases. There's fua ahead, as the case is an interesting one. A stranger named S. A. J. Bryant, haihng from Indianapolis, was arrested in Goshen Saturday for an alleged conspiracy to defraud Andrew Benkey, of Harrison township, out of $1,000. After a preliminary examination the case was continued until Wednesday, February 12. Errant gave bail in $1,000. As the evening train was Bearing Madison Thursday evening, near Middle Fork bridge, some miscreant fired into tbe passenger train on the J., M. and I. railroad. One bail passed through the coach, and another through the smoking ca-. Fortunately no one was injured, and every ttTort to arrest the fiend has so far failed. On the farm of Mr. Brower, a few miles north of Logansport, on Saturday, Charles Wheeling, while engaged hulling clover seed with a steam thresher, the boiler exploded, throwing Wheeling some distance, completely stripping the clothes from his body, breaking his jaw in three places, and fatally injuring him internally. On Friday evening at the Wabash railroad depot at Huntington, Charles Lecroix, aged 26, attempted to murder a prostitute named Jessie Young, and failing in the attempt shot himself in the forehead. He died instantly. On his person were found vials of laudanum and arsenic; also, a letter directing that his body be sent to his relatives at Hannibal, Mo. Both parties were from Fort Wayne. Adulteration of Food. Cheapness of iiyipij is one ot t- marked jeatOKI tl UiS '.hues. Staple articles of daily efi"ntioiption have not been as cheap since 1SG0 as at the present day, and the tendency still seems to be downward. The laboring man who is so fortunate as to have steady employment even at low wages can live comfortably and support his family with comparative ease. And when . the laborer has no cause of complaint on ac- ' count of high prices, certainly the rest of the community is in a condition to be contented. But, unfortunately there is another side to this picture. The cheapness of a great many staple articles of food does not result from the reduced cost of manufacturing the ru alone, nor from an over supply, but is in consequence of wholesale adulteration of manufacturers and dealers. This subject his attracted considerable attention lor several years, nor only on account of the fraud practiced, but also, (and chiefiy) because the public health is in volved. Of late, tne matter has been thoroughly investigated by competent scientific men in Eastern cities with a view or getting at the bottom facts, and finding out just what articles were adulterated and how they were adulterated. Now and then the the newspapers have published contributions on the subject trom chemists and others giving results of analysis. Perhaps it is not generally known, however, to wbat extent adulteration enters into the groceries which we daily purchase. In a recent lecture on ''Public Health Associations,' ' Mr. George T. Angell. of Boston, went over the entire ground. The Herald's summary of his address is full of unpleasant lacti Copper is found in pickies; cayenne pspper is adulterated with red lead; mustard with chroma'e of lead ; vinegar with sulphuric acid, arsenic and corrosive sublimateSyrups, flavoring oils, jellies and preserved fruits contain poisonous substances. Cocoa and chocolate are adulterated with minerals, and tea and coffee are largely adulterated. Soda, supnr and ticur contain ground white stone. Flour Is also mixed with planter of Paris, bone dnst, clay, sand and chaik. A Boston chemist found 75 per cent, of terra alba in one sample of cooking cream of tartar. Thousands of gallons of compound are sold as milk that do not contain one drop of the genuine article. Butter is .made in enormous quantities from animal fate, and even those are adulterated. In much of the molasses and honey sold are poisonous mixtures. This array of facts Is realty startling. Public attention can not too soon be directed to the subject, in such a manner as will be eiTctive ia preventing the adulteration of wbat we eit. It is bad enough to be cheated without being poisoned. But to be cheated and poisoned at tbe same time is a little more than people should be expected to bear. Ariiooa'a fetoae fVellk" Arizona Sentinel A wonoVirtul place is finaj-i, about 30 miles outbeafet of Mio!on Camp. Thmoun tains have one face of bard, smooth granite. All the water falling npon this
basin has to flow through nine tanks, one above the other. Thelowvr tanks are of easy access, and are often drained of their coutents by men and animals 'raveling between Yuma and Sonora. Tbe upper tanks are approached only by circuitous and difficult climbing over rocks. To one standing below they afford no indication of their existence, nor dots climblrg tbe smooth, steep mountain side seem possible to one unacquainted wilh the way to do it. In tbe upper tanks water has nt-ver.been known to fail. To this water comes tame of all kinds in great numbers from tbe great waterless country around Tinsj". Antelope, mountain sheep and deer of several kind?, come in herds. Rabbits end hares are as plenty as anywhere and are prey for many coyotrs and beautiful little reck foxes. One would think that all this game would be thinned out by tbe Papago Indians who in habit the country. But these Indians are superstitions and avoid Tensj -is wilh abject horror. Within two miles 01 this water are certainly 150 graves and probably more, each marked by rows of stones laid in the form of a cross. Scores of men, famubed for water, have expended tbeir last strength in reaching Tinajas, only to find the lower tanks dry and ignorant of the uoper ones have lain down in despair to die. The remains have been buried by later travelers and the graves marked, Mexican fashion, by a cross of stones. During the rush to tbe gold fields or California, cholera attacked travelers on tbe road from Mexico, as it did American immigrants along the Platte, ppstilence combined with thirst, to gather corpses at Tinajas. Recollections of blrachicg bones and grinning skulls protects tbe game from Papago arrows and flint-locks. After passing through its usual fermentation the Witer becomes clear and pure as any in tbe world; it comes from the clouds only, and, flowing in!o the tanks over insoluble granite, it carries no mineral matter. Every heavy rain pours a whirling torrent through the tanks, washing them out to the very bottom no organic matter stays behind. The
number and variety of birds here is marvelous, many of tbecu appearing to be of new and undescribed species. At morning and evening tbe din of their song, confined by sides of the mountains is almoit deafening. All around Tinajas is the remarkable vegetation of the desert; near its tanks are many and curious plants nourished by their moisture. Tbe place is one of much interest. Lafayette Courier: The example of the Fore Wayne lottery, or perfumery raiHe, as it is facetiously termed by its victims, is contagious.
