ABSENCE CONQUERS LOVE.
I The following exquisite poem, which wsy originally publUaeu la tbe Cincinnati Amerlhd In J uly. 1M1 well on to half a century ago was written by Frederick William Thoma. a native of Charleston, B. C, bat then residing In Cincinnati. He was at one time professor of rhetoric and English literature in ' the Alabama Unlversfy, but returning to bis first choice, the law, settled in Cambridge, Ma, and remained there till 10, when be waa induced to conduct the liters rry department or the Richmond Enquirer. He has since died:! Tls said that absence conqu' ri lovtv ; but oh! believe it n t; , C I've tried, alas! its powers to prove, ; ; But thou art not forgot. - , 1 Lady, though fate has bid us part, . Yet still thou art a dear As fixed in this devoted heart t. . , t As when I clasped thee here. ' I plunge Into the busy crowd. And smile to bear thy name; And yet, as If I thought aloud, Tnev know me stdl the same: . And when the wine cup passes round, I toast some other fair; l But when I ask my heart the sound Thy name Is answered there. ' And when some other name I learn. And try to whisper love. Still will my heart to thee return, . . Like the returning dove. In vain ! I ne'-er can forget. And would not be forgot, For I must bear the same regret Wbate'er may be my lot. E'en as the wounded bird will seek Its favorite bower to die. So, lady, I would near thee speak And yield ray parting sgh. Tls said that absence couquars love. But oh! believe it not; I've tried, alas! Its powers to prove, ' But thou art not forgot. ALTHEA'S MISSION. I suppose that every human being has a mission of one kind or another. Althea Erl believed that hers waa to reform the world, and I half think that she was right in her belief. Her theories were .grand, and if she could have succeeded in making other people think just as she did I have not the slightest doubt that all the ralsery that has been entailed upon woman from generation to generation since the days of Mother Eve who had such a fondness for apples as to cause all the rest of her sex to "hanker" after something better than that which they already have might have been obviated. Aitbec. Earl had a ' rich father, to begin with, and an elegant home, and a carriage to ride about in where and when she chose; and last, but not least, a lover, who believed the sun rose and set in the light of ber eves. Perhaps this was because, being in love, he was blind, as that mischief loving elf is said by Shakespeare to be. I don't pretend to know anything about it I only know that when, for the twentieth j time he asked Althea Earl to marry him, j she replied in words something like these: "Marry! I marry, indeed. with my mission only just begun, and settle down in this world with a trio of babies to care for, and my husband's old stockings by the basketful to darn. No, sir; there are more glorious fields than the?e for me to labor in. The wrongs of women cry aloud for redress. Wives that are tyrannized over by i.jsbands need tome strong nature like mine to show thtm the way out of this abominable slavery. "Poor wcaLlirjg8, with no minds of their own, need to be brought up to a plane from which they tball be able to see that they at least stand upon an qual footing with man. They want to be taught that they are making fooldOf themselves by giving up toman iu tha slightest degrte. That, if be has his club to which be must g- three times a week, she must have hers to which she inujt go tbe remaining three. That, if tbf re tnuit be babies to keep her awake half the night. Ie must be kept awake the ctfcer half. When no servants can be hud, let the d'shts ha piled in on huge heap until he onus borne at night, and then boih join in a general wash up. "But he has befn busy all day, did you say?- Grici-u3 me! an4 Iiasn't she? ' That's where the Kress injustice comes in. A man tnay work from seven until six, and then Lis excellency may rest from hislaSor and revel in ease. Can a woman do this? Nu! Nice o'clock comes, 10, anJ even 11, and most women have to gj to bed ct that hour, with work ec ugtj left umlotie to keep them busy bslr thruu'h the nig'it, which it does; for if the hand do tiud rest for a time the mind Ioes nst, but is filled with horrid dre iuis of what the morrow has in srere Cor them." "But, Althea, you will never succeed in making people believa thtse thing, or acknowledge it if they tlo. There , may be a 4ew strong mi nded ones like you, who will go heart and hnd with you in your attempt at reform, but believe me, that the majority will say: 'What can the know about these things, with her servant to command, and . her elegunt home; and yOu will fail in con vincing theie. " "Bat I shall i;ot fill!' t.nd. here she tarj a little rondo of some Italiin air;, then when se bai floiabtd she struck an attitude, aud in a stage voice, said: ",Yo not you fail to attend to my lecture on Wednesday nipht," and then she damned oat vt tht- room, as she had often done in one of those moods be-for- - - ..-rr-" .-. n John Maltbers had'' dUuwd this subject so often with hn'iffi iticed bride as to lolly understand her. fll the ft brupt, manner in which sbe left him gave him uo uneasy feelEL I - - J ' H 1 . !-'' I - For the last month or ivo she. f had been busy in preparing a lecture which she was to deliver in a week from the time on which the above conversation was he'd. She was truly a gifted womsn, this Althea Earl, and her position in society would, for a certainty, insure her success. She knew this, and felt a df sire to conquer ail the obstacles that had beeu placed in ber way by her frlands. ? Old Mr. Eirl was not at a'l pleased with the step which hisdaughter was about to take. Bet as she hud always been his idol, he took no active means to prevent her. The night of the lecture came, and a throng ot tbe best society in the town was present. The speaker was enthusiastically receivedand if ons could judge from the applause that was bestowed upon ber, her theories and arguments were fully Indorsed. The papers next day b stowed an unusual amount oi praise upon her effort, and pronounced it the most mcccssful of the y-r. During the year that followed Althea Erl spoke in many of the principal towns, and in each was as successful as in the first During this year I had occasion to go to Ireland, and, save for an occasional iu-ni in some chance paper, I lost all knowledge of Althea Karl and ber career. I" often wondered how it fared with hit friend. John Malthers whether he was ttill as thoroughly the bood slave of tbe woman he so devotedly loved, ratiently waiting until she had fulfill, d her mission for her become his wife; or whether, in a weak moment, she, in listening to his entreaties, had yielded, and was now llvicg a quiet and douestic life. X came back from Ireland late the next summer, and the week that I arrived home wta the one in which my friends decided to i& to Hastings. Of course, when urged to accompany them I could not refuse, and so I went On the second day af ttr my arrival I was sitting under the j-ortico of the hotel at which I was staying, looking out upon the vast expanse of water, upon the bosom of ' which I had so lately spent many hoars, when a sharp slap on my shoulder caused see to start from my chair and utter an exclamation which might not look well in print There, at my aide, stood John Maithtrs, and looking as happy as a May-day nueen. . ' V t. - & i - - - :. "Why. John," I said, "how well you look, and how glad J. am to, see you. Now tell me, for I am dying to know, bow goes your love aHaix with Althea Earl? Haa the
fulfilled ber mission, ias she determined to doT' i. "Come with me," be, said; have an old friend of yours sharing my room who will be glad to see you." Then he led me through the entire length of one of the long balls, and at the end gently tipped at a half open door. The sweetest of voices eaid, "Come in," and in we went ; tii ,4 -y Althea!" I said. u 'Why, John, how unkind of you to surprise me in this manner." - . ( "When did you arrive. Fred?" (to me.) "About a week ago. Bnt I think the surprise is as great to me as to you. ' I Certainly did not expect to find you here; I. thought you bad a mission to per'orm." From the corner opposite there came a half-suppressed laugh, as Althea called to a servant in the next room: "Louise, bring Floyd here a minute, I want to show her to this gentleman." The servant entered, bearing tenderly, a three months' old baby, upon whose face could be seen strong traces of the mother's beauty. . .. ' ' "I see it all," I said; it is the common fate of women. They start out in life with lofty purposes, and dreams of a mission which they must fulfill, and after all end with a husband, a home and a baby. "I think you have made one mistake," she replied; ' correct that, and I will agree with you say that here a woman's mission truly begins' tl'BBEAT TOPICS. ,
An appropriation of $10,000 is asked for in Philadelphia to mount a portion of the city police. It has cost a youth of Charleston, 111.. $3,000 to slander a young lady, and he has been served right The Health Board of Chicago claims that the present year has been the healthiest in that city since 1871. ! The Harvard Law School will not graduate a class this year, on account of the lengthening of the coarse. f TheChlcsgo Journal wishes all the gold coins under five dollars called 'in and kept in, as inconveniently small. 1 The court of oueen'a bench of Quebec has decided that a man who frightens another to death is guilty of manslaughter. , A man at Leominster, Mass.. has been kilied by inhaling the sulphur from friction matches to cure an attack of diphtheria. , Com olai nt is made that little children in some of the public schools of Rhode Island are compelled to walk upon their toes. A lhtllAlnliian and Vita vlfa hkVA Wn fined $25 each for tampering with letters directed to tbetr servant girl. The New York Times wishes some one would . devise an effective contrivance for preventing the noisy rattling of the win dows of street stsges. A novelty at the recent fair at St. Paul, Minn., was a team of elk, well broken to harness, and very gentle. They travel 16 miles an hour. "Ar to type" pictures are all the style in some of the eastern cities. They are considerably Superior to photographs, and can be sold much cheaper. At least one Bjston clergyman always speaks of women, Dot ladies, and occasionally, if be uses the wrong word in the pal pit, will stop and correct himself. , . The Chicago Times announces that at the iccoinine of the new year it will be printed on a larger sheet with larger type, and will charge fifteen dollars per year. . Moat tramps are shrewd fellows. These numbers have won large quantities of money within a few weeks, and consequently they are hating a good run. , Several billiard saloons in Hartford, Conn., have been closed for want of patronage. It is evident the billiard experts of that city are not as flush iu. money matters as they were at one time. It took a letter 11 days to go from one Florida town to another, a distance of 2S miles, und the pt-ople of both, with a rt-ck-less disregard of expense, are now clamoring for a railroad. , An aed resident of one of our eastern cities, who has watched the weather for about 70 jears, predicts an open and mild winter. Hessvs: "If the last storm b fore and the first after the sun crossed the line clear off mild and warm, we may expect a broken winter." Frank Watson, a tramp, was mangled by a freight train at Nelson Creek, Ky., and turned out to be a woman. She was born in Louisiana; lost her father in the war; at the cge of 1G, some months before the accident, bad donned mala attire to earn a better living, and had just lot a position as teamster. A story reaches us that capitally illustrates the shrewdness of tramps and their disinclination to work. A Hartford lady, who Las fed from five to a dozen weekly for months pabt, recently had a ton of coal dumped in the gangway leading from the gate. Since that coal has been there not a single tramp has appeared for a meal. A railroad company, suspecting deadheads. pat a detective on the track. One day he heard a passenger remark that it was very easy to go from H to D without a ticket lie watched the speaker and ; was surprised to see mm hand the conductor a ticxet. "When I want to travel without a ticket I walk." . A New Way of Detecting Counterfeits. The treasury department opened propos als lor f urmshing tbe paper lor printing currency and bonds ot the government There were nearly twenty bids. One party from the west, who submitted proposals for furn ishing the paper, sent a description at tbe same time of how he proposed to prevent the counterfeiting ot tbe currency. His plan is to Impregnate the pulp of the paper with oxide of iron, and then when tbe bills are made up and circulated, the use of a small magnet anywhere and at any time in the counting would at once demonstrate the genuine from the spurious.
