THE INDIANA STATE SENTINEL, WEDNESDAY MORNING, DECEMBFIi 11, 1878.
CURRENT TOPICS.
Gambling is on the increase in Philadelphia. A big temperance convention will be held at Waterloo, Iowa, January 15. The "iron clad not" swindle ia being successfully played upon farmers in the west.t The young people of Nebraska City entertain each other at 8 o'clock (a. m.) breakfast. Florida Is more nearly out ot debt than ver before in her history, says the Falatka Herald. The thermometer has registered several degrees balow zero in some parts of Canada alrtady this winter. . Eighty thousand head of cattle was the present a Texan cattle king gave to his daughter on her marriage. Judge Hives, of the United Statea Court in Virginia, has issued an order forcing negro jurors on the state courts. ' It is bv no means certain that Wade Hampton's leg will not have to be amputated. So bid Charleston doctor says. A magistrate at Nortbfield, Minn., was addressed as "Your Horror," "Joe" and "you darned fool" in the course of an eloquent speech by a light of the local bar, who was pleading a case before him. The Young Men's Christian Association of Washington was so shocked by the discovery that aorae artists occupying rooms in its building were studying from living models that it ordered them 10 vacate forthwith. The young king of Siam has appointed the Key. 8. (i. McFarland, 1. 1).. to take charge of a government school In Bangkok, with a view to the establishment of a system of popular education for the people. "An innocent German," says the New York Times, "took a police captain into his confidence." He must have been remarkably "innocent" or he would never haye been guilty of doing such a foolUh act. Louis Lochman, of Yorkville, New York, was up in court on Tuesday for thrashing a man named Hallett because he caught Hallet flirting with his daughter. Lochman had warned HaUett not to carry on the flirting. Justice Wandeil looked at Lochman sternly and lined him one cent. . Wasn't that an honest man in Lewiston, Maine? Hj was buying his ticket at the box office of Music Hall and in payment handed up a "dandy coin with a ten cent piece riveted to it. However, even that didn't equal a gold dollar, for the 412JS grains are now wcrth only about 80 ceuts and a fraction. . Georgia women make good political helpmeets: Senator Gordon's wife advises her husband what to do in many important matters of state; Governor Colquitt's wife conducts much of his business for hira; Congressman Felton's lady ought really to be the congressman, and Senator lien Uili looks to his bst:er half for clear headed logic. The black dag of the pirate has been raised in almost every part of the Persian Gulf. Recently the commander of an English man-of-war gave his vessel the appearance of an unarmed merchantman, and sailed out on the gulf. He wai surrounded by pirates until the portholes were opened and the jrape and canister began to tly. Six hundred pirates died tliere. Whalers have been wondering what haa become of all the whales, but there is now news aa to where they are disporting. Lieutenat Sandebery, of the Swedish Navy, has lately returned from an expedition to Russian Lapland, made especially with a vie to researches in natural history, and has brought back many rare zoological specimens, which he will divide among the museums of Stockholm, Christiania and St. Petersburg. He reports that never were such quau tities of whales seen in the Gulf of Naranuer and White Sea as during last summer, and that a single Norwegian boat captured a hundred. It has lecn frequently remarked that the general condition of health is better after an epidemic than before it. This is certainty th8 Caso with. New Orleans at present. The number of deaths from all causes for the current week is remarkably small, and the death rate lower than that of nearly every other city in this country. The city h free from contagious or infectious diseases, ana particularly from thoce diseases which prevail in more northern cities at this seacon of the year, a3 scarlet fever and smallpox. The clerks of the board of health have about completed the record of fever cass and deaths which occurred during the summer. There were reported 22,000 caes of yellow lever and 4 l'.x) deaths, which is the grand total for the epidemic New Orleans paper. The Swiss government having recently permitted Roman Catholic priests who had been deprived of their livings to present themselves for renomination, thus modifying its previous decision against the Komaa Catholic clergy, . the Vatican haa taken steps to ascartam if there waa any favorable- prospects of opening negotiations in order to re establish relations between Switzerland and the Holy See. . Mgr. liiauchi, formerly papal nuncio to Bavaria, baa ,v'.so fent with this object to Switzerland, in order to study the situation and convey instructions to tbe bishops with a view to pave the way for an understanding. Should ccasioa offer. Mgr. BianchI is also authorized to open negotiations with the Swiss government. Or f tf ill rsnranaiM The study of men's naae3 as curious as it is interesting. Arbitrary as they seem today, they all had their source evidently In Some fitting fact. Many English surnames express the county, estate, or residence of their original, bearers, as BurgoyDe, from Burgundy; Cornell or Corn wal lis, from Cornwall; Fleming, from Flanders; Gaskin and Gaseoyne, from Gascony; Hanway, from Hainault; roiacg, from t'oiana; weisn, Walsh and Wal lis, from Wales; Coombs, Cora p ton, Clayton. Sutton, Preston and Wasmngton, from towns in the county of Sussex. Eogland. Camden, tbe antiquary, says every village in Normandy has suroamed some English family. Dale. Forest, Hill. Wood, and the like are derived from the character or situation of those who first bore the names. The prefix atte or at, softened to a or an, has helped to form a number of names. Thus, if a man lived on a moor, be would call himself Atteinoor or Atmoor; if near a gat, Atteate or Atgate. John atie tbe Oaks wai in due time Shortened to John Noaks; Peter at the Seven Oaks into l'etcr Snooks, Byfield, Byford .Underbill and Underwood indicated residence originally. In old Knglish applegarth meant orchard, whence Applegate and Appleton; chase, a forest; clive, a cliff; clougtaua ravine; cobb, a harbor, whence theee names. The root of tbe ubiquitous 8mith is the Anglo-Saxon smitan, to imlte. It was applied primarily to blacksmiths, wheelwrights, carpenters, masons and smltersor strikers in general. Baker. Taylor, Butler, Colemsn (coalmen). Draper, Cowper (COOper), Cutler, Miller and the rest plainly denote occupations. Latimer is from latiner a writer of Latin; Ix rimer is a maker of purs and bndle bits; Arkwright, a maker of chests; Lander, contracted Irom layandier, a wasnerwoman; Banister, the keeper of a bath; Kidder, a huckster; Tait, a minstrel; Crocker, a potter. Such names as Baxter and Bagster are the feminine for baker, Webster of webber or weaver, which shows that these trades were first followed by women, and that ' when men began to take them up they for some time kept the feminine names. Steward, Stewart or Stuart, Knight, AbFalconer, Leggett (legite) either signified
irhat the persons so styled were, or they were given them in jest or derision, like the names king, priace and pope.'- The termination ward indicates a keeper, as Durward, doorkeeper; Hay ward, keeper of the town cattle; Woodward, forest keeper. Bead, Reed or Reid, la an old form of spelling red, and was bestowed as White. Brown and Black were to denote the color worn or the complexion had. 'Hogarth, from the Dutch, means generous, high natured; Rush is subtle; Bowne, ready; Bonner, kind, gracious; Eldridge, wild, ghastly. Many Welsh names, naturalized in English, are from personal traits, as More, great; Doff, black; Gongh, red. Surnames, now apparently meaningless, had meaning in old Koglish and pro-' incial dialects. Brock, for instance, signifies badger; Talbot, mastitt; Todd, fox; Culyer, pigeon; Heashaw, young heron; Coke, cook. SalvatlosO Call. Mr. Talmage has touched up the newsEaper men. He visited their offices at night, ie saw the pens scratch and heard the scissors cut and the typea click and tbe wheels rush. Then he reflected that 2,600,000 persons read the daily newspapers of New York, and he said: "I once could not understand how the Bible statement could be true that 'nations shall be born in a day.' Now I understand it. Get tbe telegraph operators and the newspaper editors converted, and in 21 hours the earth would hear salvation's call." Tbe Baltimore Gazette grimly adds that the editors and operators are as good as they can afford to be at present salaries, and Mr. Talmage, who is receiving $12,000 per year for less work than the humblest of them performs, knows it as well as he knows his own name. More Popular Than Ever. (Tipton Times. The management of tbe Indianapolis Sentinel has again changed, John C. Shoemaker, former president, assuming control. The Sentinel each day is becoming more popular.and under the efficient management of Mr. Shoemaker will continue to grow in popularity. Tbe Sentinel is justly entitled to the patronage of every democrat in the state, being as it is a true exponent of the democratic doctrine. Hawks can fly at the rate of one hundred and fifty miles an hour.
Caution to I he Pnblle. To avoid imposition, purchasers of Waltham watches will observe that every genuine watch, whether gold or silver, bears our trade mark on both case and movement. Gold cases are stamped "A. W. Co." and guarantee certificates accompany them. Silver cases are stamped "Am. Watch Co., Waltham, Mass., Sterling Silver," and are accom panied by guarantee certificates, signed R. E. Robbins, Treasurer. The name "Waltham" is plainly engraved upon all move ments, irrespective of other distinguishing marks. This caution is rendered necessary by reason of the fact that our cases are frequently separated from our movements and put upon worthless movements of other makers, and rce versa, thus affecting injuriously tbe performance of the watches and vitiating our guarantee, which is intended to cover onlv our complete watches wholly made by us. It is necessary also becau-e it is so no torious as to be a public scandal, that there is great fraud in the metal quality of both gold and silver cases as now generally sold. We have demonstrated by frequent assays that many gold and silver cases offered In the market are debased, from 10 to 20 per cent, from the quality they assume to be, This is a fraud upon the purchaser, and ac counts for tbe low price at which such cased watches have been sold. "Eighteen carat" gold, such as the Wal tham cases are made ot, is as nearly pure gold as can be made and be durable. It contains 750 1000 of pure gold and 230 1000 of alloy. Sterling Silver (English government standard) contains 925 1000 of pure silver and 751000 of alloy. The Waltham Watches will always be found up to the standard repre sented.
