area of country ra placed under the gwernment or the InJlina territory. Among the old settlers wbo nave honored this meeting by their presence, there are probably tome persona who were Inhabitants of the territory -when Its Jurbtdlctlou, under the administration of (iovernor Harrison, extended over all the country from the state of Oftio west wardly as far as the sources of the rivers which flow into the MUslsHippl, northwardly to the boundary line between tne United States and Canada, and so ithwardly on the western sides of the rivers Ohio and Mississippi, as far as the thirtv-lhtrd dezreenf north latitude.
Extending through various climates, the area of territory under the government of the United (States Is ver gr at. in our southern region magnolia forests, orange groves and different kinds of tropical fruits are growing. In oor most northern territory, on the oorders ot the Arctic ccan, there are vast and dreary regions of mow covered mountains, frozen plains and Icebergs. It Is said that the Koman empire, lathe days of Constantino the Great, extended over at least 1 6 O.ouu square miles. There are at the present time uniit-r the- Jurisdiction of the government of the United Btatea about 3,8-tt) (UK) square miles of territory an area grea'er than that of Europe The distance from Hit ha, the capital of Alaska, to the capital of the Union, by the shortest rout usually traveled, Is about 4HJU miles, a d when the hour of noon striken WashlnKtonClty.lt Is only 9 o'clock In tne morning at Kan Francisco. The state of Indiana occupies a very favorable geographic! poit:on in the great middle region wulch lies between the Allegheny mountains and the Kocky mountains an Immense region, superior to any other district of country of nimllar extent Id the quantity and variety of its lertile lands, in tbe number of Its growing cities, In the number of Its churches, tehools, colleges, universities and. other educational Institutions, in the salubrity of its climate, in the number and aggregate length ol Its navlgab e rivers, in its ake baibors, in the number apd total length of Its railroads and telegraph lines, in the number of its fores' of useful timber, and In lis great abundance of coal, iron, copper, lead and other valuable minerals. The river Ohio, In Its course ot 1,000 miles, from Pittsburg to the river Mississippi, receives about 27u tributaries, including rivers and creeks. The water of the Mississippi river which flows past the city of Memphis in one year dim been estirns tea at a quantity sufficient to cover an area of 100.0UO square miles to the depth of seven and ft half feet. At a time not very far distant tbe great middie region, in which Indiana holds a favorabla position, will be distinguished as the chief stronghold of the greatest nation la the world. From year to year the old log cabins which were the dearly bought homes of early settlers of Indiana, are falling Into ruins. The building of such dwellings in our state will soon be spoken of as one of the lost arts. But for many centurie interesting memorials of the good works of the early settlers of the state, and desenpt ions of their log cabins, their old fashioned household turn tare, their wearing apparel and their primitive farming implements, will be preserved in history, in poetry. In painting and in sculpture. The numerous comfortable dwelling houses, which are called hewed log houses" and "frame houea," will, from time to tune, be demollsoed to make room for more costly. grander and more durable mansions of brick or of stone. The fence rails now In use will disappear, and the work of logrolling and making rails will cease. We shall not again see the happy faces of hardy school children playing In the country around old log cabin scuool houses, with open doors, Isrge fireplaces, woodtn chimneys, puncheon floors, long windows, clapboard roofr, rough benches and strong writing desks. Thespiiltof mcdern pi ogress will not stop In Its long course. New discoveries In the fields of science, new Inventions In all departments of human iud::slry, and tbe arts of agriculture, architecture and landscape gardening will gradually change the face of the country; and new villages, towns and cities will be built at many different places to supply the demands of trade, commerce and the arts among a large, enlightened, and constantly Increasing populatiou. Ail these works of the progress of civilization will tie carried forward by the people of the present times, and their successors. Nevertheless, the old settlers, to whom my brief remarks are addressed, know that the future peace and temporal prosperity of the people of Indiana do not necessarily depend on the lapld progress of those great improvements wnich can be made by the industry and wisdom of man. The grand old ruins of the empires of Assyria and Egypt have solemnly proclaimed to man kind tor many centuries that nations can not save themselves from decline and desolation merely by the strength of nuinliers, wealth and intellectual power. Even thse strong forces, supported by wise and humane laws, will never be powerful enough to subdue the evil and malignant influences which constantly disturb the ieace of states. Long ago, by tbe voice of an Inspired servant, the Ail Powerful Creator and K tiler of nations said to those who were a mighty people: "if ye walk In my statutes and keep my commandments, and do them, I will give you poace in the and. and ye shall lie down, and none shall make yon a'ralJ." Th's law of nations Is still in force; and i othlng but the power ot divine lawandChri tian love, operating on the hearts of tbe people, can establish a perfect condition of peace on earth and good will toward men. The committee on permanent organization reported the following, which was unanimously adopted: COKSTITCTIOIt. Article I. This association shall be called tbe Indiana pioneer society. Balten.- which was well received. By request J. V. LMey repeated the excellent poem delivered by Mm at the old set 11 era' metirgheM at Oik an J a short time ago, and which was published in full in tie Sentinel at the time. Th convention then went into the election of officers, with the followicgreiult: LIST Or OFFICERS. President Judge C. II. Test, of Marlon. Vice rvsl ient-John Lngrow, of Gibson; John W. Jr"sey, of Pike; Martain Adsins.of Clarke, Ezra Lath rop. Dr. Hond.jobn I. Morrison, Henry; Andy Mmith, Marion: the lion. John Collfitof Vermillion; the lion. 11. T. of Steuben: Fielding Beeler, of Marlon; L, B. Htockton and General Hlmonson, of Clarke, and Christian 1'arker, of Allen. After transacting some other business of minor importance the convention adjourned tine die. Meeting of the Stat Horticultural Society. In the years since the organization of the state board of agriculture a number of organizations have sprung from it and operate with it. One of these allied organiza tions ia the state horticultural society, which holds a meeting one night each year during the state fair. ' tst sight the society met at the rooms of the state board of agriculture. V. A. Reagan, of Clayton, was called to the cbair. The discussion cf matters of interest to fruit growers was of an informal character, but brought out a number of valuable ideas. Mr. Bower, of Franklin county, presented two new varieties of seedling peaches, which were very fine in appearance, and being tested, were found to make that appearance good. It was the opinion of tbe gentlemen present that they already had enough varieties, and that more attention should be paid to the established varieties. It was also thought that peach growing could not ba made profitable in this latitude. It was stated that the plum crop had not suffered so much from the ravages of the curculio this year as for years past, and the reason appeared to be that the season was so early that the fruit was well grown before tbe fly appeared. Apples, pears, etc , do not suffer from the curcnlio, and tbe reason appears to be that when the egg is deposited it is left too much exposed to the weather, and so perishes. The members of the association appear to think it better that the fruit growers should experiment with tbe new varieties of grapes than for the whole community to be experimenting, with a good prospect of going back t the old va rieiies. 0a the subject ot mulching srr.all fruit it was decided to be profitable on all occasions. Mr. Omer was not much la favor of cutting back. He thought it increased the quantity, at the expense of the quality. Cabbage worms and currant worms were discussed, but as no one knew a better cure than wood ashes, the subject was laid over, and tbe meeting adjourned. The annual meeting of the association will be hald at Danville the second week in December. The annual meeting of the Ohio state association will be held at Dayton, the first week in December.
