Trade in the general merchandise markets opens rather quiet this week, but merchants are confident of an improvement, and values are steady. The grocery market was active today under a good demand for all staples, and prices rule firm. Dullness was tbe chief characteristic of the grain markets. Wheat M as very quiet at a decline of lc. There were no transactions reported. No. 2 red was saleable at 8c and 89c, but the usual buyers were not bidding, aid there were no offerings of consequence. The condition of eastern markets Is unfavorable to shippers, prices for future delivery being lower and weak. Corn was dull and depressed under a further decline at the seaboard and an entire absence of any shipping or speculative demand. The feeling for spot and future is weak, and holders are offering freely. Receipts this morning were moderately large Oats were steady and unchanged. There was ft good consumptive demand for flour, and the
market was steady at previous quotations. Provisions were dull and nominal. Country produce was quiet. Eg? were a shade higher. The following were the leceipts and shipments of leading articles during the preceding twenty-four hours, as reported to the board of trade:

Document Tnat Ong-nt to Retnrn Resnrrected Corpse to Its Political A rave.
The following address of the republican anti-Orth club, of CrawfordsTille, to the re publican voters of the Ninth congressional district was presented to the editor of the Crawfordsville Journal on Wednesday last with the request that it be published, but the editor declined to ive it a place in his columns, al legtng as a reason for its rejection that bis paper had already been maie up for this week. Steps have been taken, however, to give the document a wide circulation throughout the Ninth district, and Its perusal by republicans can not but have an
important effect on the coming election:
To the Republican Voters of the Ninth Congressional District, Indiana: You will doubtless remember that at the close of our former address to you we promised if Mr. Orth would explain his connec tion with the Venezuela frauds, and clear himself of the charges preferred against him, we would cease opposing his election. We have waited a reasonable time hoping he could and would do so. Round and rotted
me district he has gone with the padlock upon his lips and the charge basted upan bis back. As yet he has not denied tnat the Venezuela awards were frauds of TalmsL'e and Stil well; he has not denied his complicity with those men, now of such bad eminence, or that for their benefit he bad congress pass an act to compel payment of the bonds the two had wrongfully acquired;
ue uus not usniea mat, in compensation of his services In that way, he received from them $7,000 In the certificates awarded, being the purchase money for his vote and in

ana reported omcially by the Springer committee. If so, we can not well be considered as one of hfs detractors. The expression was simply tbe half delirious rant of a man made mad by guilt and exposure. Certainly there is no explanation in it His second utterance, padlock off, was last Saturday at Lebanon, Boone county. The Indianapolis Journal reports him as saying there that he had been exonerated from the charges we preferred in our former address by two democratic congressional committee s. This, it will be seen, is noexplanathn, yet as it is the only apology offered by him we ask attention while we briefly dispose of it. We deny the truth of the statement, fellow citizens, and will convince you it ii a deliberate falsehood. First, the statement Is unaccompanied by reference to any report by any committee.
in tact tnere is no such exoneration to he
found. We say this broadly, and challenge Mr. Orth or any one of his friends to give you a sentence from any report which can be so construed. Secondly, the charge of complicity In the enezuelan frauds, and the receipt of bonds in payment of service in the infamous connection, first appeared publicly in the report made by the Springer house committee In 1 370 the very report from which we made quotations in our former address to you. Note the year 1876. Now you all know that then have not been two congresses since that date. You all know, in the next place, that it is not the habit of the house to have or require two reports to the same effect upon tne same subject by the same or by different commltUei. So the
sta'ement is inferentially false. Thirdly, we do not stand upon inference, but proceed to settle the matter by conclusive evidence. The last congress, the only one following that of 1870, passed the following act, which we give verbatim and in full: Alt ACT IN RELATIOX TO TUB YEXEZUXLAN MIXED COMMISSION. ' Be It enacted by the senate and house of representatives of the United .States of America in congress assembled : That the actentl led "An act to enforce the stipulations of the convention of Venezuela of April twenty-flrih, eighteen hundred and sixty-six, and the p-yraent of adjudicated calms, 'approved February twenty firth, eighteen hundred and seventy-three, ba. and
me same is nereov reDeaed : Provided, hn nr.
e er, lhat nothing herein or In the act hereby repealed tthall be construed as an expression of any opinion on the part of congress in reoect to the validity of any awards made under aaid convention, or as to the proprietvof a negotiation bvthe executive nf
tion In repect to the same.
Approved June a, 1878. . The algniflcancy of the act consists in this: It repeals the act of the 25th of April , 1873, which was tbe one Mr. Orth had passed in aid of Talmage and Stilwell, and fr which he received the $7,000 in bonds. The act of 1873, you will remember, asserted the validity of the awards, aud required their pay-
