STATE INTELLIGENCE.
LastniRht, in Jllddletown, the safe of Isaac G. Morris was blown open, and over $200 obtained. An entrance was made by prying oft a shatter in the rear. The job showed the work of professionals. "ew Albany: Lews Denny, 15 years of age, austalned fatal injuries yesterday by being iun over by an express wagon he had been driving. His horse started to ran away, and in attempting to stop the animal he fell under the wheels. Danville Democrat: The Fifty first Indiana will hold a reunion at Danville on tbe ll)th, on the occasion of the annual reunion of the Eleventh regiment It will be a pleasant and profitable gathering, and the citizens of Danville will do their part in contributing to its success. Salem Democrat: "We are now in the very height of the peach season. Large shipments are being made from this point, and we notice a great many wagons from the sonth part of the county going north on the ridges and high lands to lay in a supply of this luscious fruit for canning purposes. Oreencastle: William Hunt, a brakeman on the Indianapolis and St. Louis railroad, while his train was on the side track west of the city yesterday, waiting for an east bound passenger train, sat down on the track and fell asleep. The passenger train ran over bis body, killing him instantly. His remains were brought to this place for burial. Hunt was formerly a compositor in the Banner office of this city. Lafayette Courier: A case of unprecedented cruelty is reported from near Darlington, in Montgomery county. A man whose name is unknown to as left his horses tied in the woods while he waDdered on in a drunken state. Coming to his senses he forgot where he had left tbe animals, and they were not found for ten days by which time one had died and the other lay there a living skeleton. A jug of whisky in the wagon told the whole story. Lafayette Courier: This morning about 8 o'clock a terrible accident happened to Barney Coile, a wood sawer employed by the L , N. A. and C. railroad company. He was caught between an engine and a wood pile which lies above the machine shops in tbe L., N. A. and C. yards, and after being dragged bo me distance was forced in between the engine and tender. He was carried into the master mechanic's office were Drs. IL M. and Frank O'Farrell rendered him all the assistance they could. The doctors do not expect his death to day, but do not believe ihat he can long endure his sufferings. New Albany Ledger-Standard: A probably fatal accident occurred.near the cooper shop on Cherry street this morning. Louis Denny, son of Henry Denny, drove there with oue of John Crow's heavy one horse express wagons after a load of kegs. While standing by the wagon the horse started off, whereupon Louis took the reins and tried, inef fectually, to stop the animal, which kept increasing its speed. In running the young man stumbled and fell, and the wheels passed over his body and ' head, inflicting probably fatal injuries. Louis began voaiiting, and ejected considerable quantities of blood. Scott County Democrat: Last Thursday night about 10 o'clock three men rode up to the fence at the dwelling house of a man known as Bussey Parks, in Johnson township, near what is known as Davis' Mill, and called 'Mr. Parks to the door. One of the scoundrels then engaged Mr. P. in conversation while tbe other two entered the house and attempted a nameless offense on his wife. They first offered her ten dollars to submit to them, and then threatened her. Still refusing, they dragged the poor women from the bed, but her loud screams drove the scoundrels away. It is said some of them are known, and a little judicious hanging would be healthy for the whole community. Columbus Democrat: Last night the house of Thomas Cummings, about four miles northeast of Columbus, was entered by thieves and money and notes taken to the amount of $1,925. Mr. Cummings was in town in the evening for the purpose of depositing the notes and money, and after attending to rome other business he went to the bank and found it closed. He then went borne, and before going to bed fastened all the doors and windows of the house, and put the pocket book containing tbe money and notes under his pillow. That is all he knew until he awoke the next morning and found tbe money gone. He thinks he must have been chloroformed, as he is not usually a sound sleeper. The property taken was two notes, one for $1,000 and one for $J00, and $325 in money. Lawrenceburg: Daniel Lake of Logan township, has got an idea into his head that it is not good to live alone, and being afraid of ye festive newspaper man, lurked upon the outskirts of the city last night until all respectable citizen we're supposed to be In bed. He then stole into town and aroused Deputy Clerk Tebbs, and the pair meandered to the clerk's office, and on account of the youth and bashtulness of the would be groom, who is only seventy years of age, we will not say that he took out a license to marry Mrs. Sallie Hillman, of Wilmington, aged sixty-nine year?, two months and four days, and that the ceremony will be performed on Sunday next We have no words of condolenoe to offer to tbe twelve bereaved children of Mr. Lake, but hope they will receive this affliction in a Christian spirit Ft. Wayne Sentinel: Wednesday night Judge Borden and C. M. Comparet addressed a large democratic meetl ig at Cook's school house. After the meeting they started home in a one seated buggy drawn by two horses. Tbe road was bad and the night dark, and when about eight miles from the city their horses took fright and ran away, running into sditch and throwing the two gentlemen over a tence into a piece of timber land. Tbe horses ran with part of tbe vehicle for about a mile, when they were stopped. One of the horses wai fatally hurt, and the other was slightly bruised. The buggy is a total wreck. Judge Borden and Mr. Comparet are both portly and, of courae, were badly shaken up. The judge la considerably braised, and his head and shoulders are severely cut. His injuries are painful and will probably lay him up for a few days. They are not serious, however. Mr. Com pare t's back seems to be injured, but bow badly it ia impossible as yet to state. HATES A5D THE FBAl'D. Stubborn race that (he People Will Tblatk A boat nt Act l'pn. (Brooklyn Eagle. . It has been made as clear as the day, for instance, that a great majority of tL? voters of the state of Louisiana had decfued fc cost the electoral vote of tbat state for Samuel J. Tilden. It was found impossible, even under the infamous legal devices which had been resorted to there, to secure even a legal pretext for wresting the electoral vote from Tilden and giving it to Hayes. In order to do this, even tbe partisan laws of Louisiana had to be set aside and overriden. It is in evidence that the rascals who undertook this work would not have had the courage to do it if they had not received assurances of countenance, support and protection from the federal government. It is charged that a personal friend of the president a member of his cabinet, the secretary of the treasury of the United Statec over his own signature, encouraged thij fraud and promised
to reward it The officer in question is placed upon tbe stand, and under oath he dec'ares that be is unable to say wbetber be wrote a cerUin letter or not. Later on an adventuress testifies that she wrote the letter, and tells a story so flippant and preposterous that no one believes her. Catching at this way of escape, the official again goes on the stand, and this time swears positively that he did not write the letter. The original letter Is not produced, and therefore the proof of its authorship is not conclusive, although the person the letter was designed to influence swore positively, not only that he received it, but that it contained only a reaffirmation of verbal assurances he had exacted and with which he was not satisfied. It is now asaerted that the original letter is in possession of the committee of congress, and if this should prove true, there is no getting away from the conclusion that a member of the cabinet was a party to the national fraud, and that he committed perjury repeatedly, to screen himself from the consequences. The original Sherman letter has not, however, as yet been produced, and until it is both its author and the president are entitled to the benefit of any doubt which may exist as to Sherman's agency in this transaction. If the letter should be forthcoming, and it can be shown to nave been written by Sfeerman, he can not escape impeachment, nor can Mr. Hayes escape complicity in tbe great fraud, and like impeachment, except by instantly dismissing Sherman from his place as one of his advisers, and as the chief financial officer of the government. It seems to us this conclusion is inevitable. Mr. Hayes, however, ia confronted with the facts, which he can not ignore, and in view of which immediate action on his part is demanded. It is not even disputed now in any quarter that Tilden was entitled to the electoral vote of the state of Louisiana. Ihe way he was cheated out of it has been made clear; tbe parties to the fraud are well known, and about their guilt there can be no reasonable doubt. Very nearly, every one of these is rascals now holding a federal position. They have obtained them from Mr. Hayes. While it Is possible that when he appointed these men to offices of honor and trust, he supposed that he was rewarding ordinary party services in doing so, and that he acted on the advice of others and without knowing the real state of the case; Mr. Hayes can' not screen himself-behind any such theory for one day longer. Tbe following is tbe damning .record which proves how tbe men who cheated the American people out of their right to elect their chief magistrate have been rewarded: Madison J. Wells, of the returning board, surveyor of the custom house. New Orleans. Thomas C. Anderson, of the returning board, special deputy collector of customs. L. M. Keuner,of tbe returning board, deputy naval officer. U. Casenave, of the returning board, brother in custom house, appointed by him. Y. A. Woodward, cleric lnreturnlng board, cleric in post otlice. Michael Hahan, state register of votes, superintendent of New Orleaus mint. Abel, Charles 8., Vernon parish, secretary of the returning board, now clerk: In the custom house. Anderson, James E., East Felitlana, supervisor of registration, cleric In the custom house, since removed. Astwood. II. C, Ouachita parish, now deputy United States marshal. Blanehard, B. P., Orleans parish, republican campaign committee, now clerk In the custom house. Brlen, A. J., Orleans, supervisor second ward now Inspector in custom house. Brewster, O. II., Ouachita, canvasser, now surveyor general of Louisiana. Closer. F. A., East Baton Rouge, supervisor of registration, now Inspector in custom bouse. Creagh. Patrick, Orleans, supervisor third ward, chief laborer, custom house. Dinkgrave, John II.. Ouachita, on?anizor In Fifth district, member of legislature; tok a prominent part In getting up protests. Grady, M.- J., Ouachita, supervisor of ieglstratlou, deputy collector of Internal revenue. Green, W illiam 11.. Orleans, state registrar, minute clerk for returning board, inspector, clerk in custom bouse. Hardy, W. It., Ouachita, temporary district attorney, inspector in custom house. Jewett, D. J. M. A., Orleans, secretary of state republican committee, Inspector in custom house. Kellokte, W. P., Orleans, governor. United Slates Benator. Kempton, A. V Orleans, commissioner ward Eleven, poll 2, boatman in custom house. Levisse, A. B., Caddo, elector, collector of Internal revenue. Underwood, Napoleon, Orleans, supervisor Twelfth ward, Inspector in custom house. It seems to us that while these rascals are kept in lucrative federal offices the question which seemed to concern our republican friends so much 'a short time since: "Is President Hayes to be impeached?" is to be determined by Mr. Hayes rather than by anybody else. NCANDAL.
Fnt About the Late Waftnlngton Affair. Brooklyn Eagle.j A vague announcement of a scandal in high life in Washington about a week ago naturally gave a stimulus to curiosity, and it is a telling commentary upon the bocial condition of affairs at the national capital that a mere outline of tbe case having been allowed to reach the public, at least a dozen different names were hazarded as satifactorily meeting the requirements of the general description. A handsome and dashing lady, desierately given to flirtation and suffering from an Irresistible penchant for members of foreign diplomatic corps, was charged with having disgraced herself and her family, causing her husband, an army officer of high standing, to fight a duel abroad and return to this country without his wife, whom, according to rumor, he had left with the foreign secretary of her choice. It is certainly creditable to our best society that an announcement as emphatic, a description as definite as this, should have been thoroughly canvassed and a dozen names supplied by inference without reaching tbe actual parties in tbe case. The deduction is so obvious that we leave it to the reader to make for himself. Tbe facts, so far as they can be gathered, have at last appeared in detail, and are published to the world in the morning papers to-day.. General Gallatin Lawrence, who served in the army with great gallantry and won promotion honorably, married at the close oi the war Mrs. Kingsbury, widow of Captain Kingsbury, killed at the battle of Antietam. It is taid that the wedding took place within a year of Captain Kingsbury's death, an obvious anachronism, for the date of tbe battle of ABtietam was September, 18G2: Lee's surrender was In April. lSto. At all events little time was lost between her widowhood and second ni image. Captain Kingsbury waa on General Lawrence's staff and one of tbe many army scandals of the time credited General Lawrence with a kind eye to the widow immediately upon her husband's death. Mrs. Lawrence has been for some time in Paris, and rumors reached her husband here of ber misconduct with a German secretary of legation. He started immediately for Paris and secured from the secretary that soothing document, a written apology, armed with which he returned to this country. Shortly afterward he found letters still further implicating his wife, and again sailed for Europe. This time he challenged the secretary to a duel, which is said to have taken place in Belgium. Mr. Dennett is alleged to have acted as his second. The despoiler of his hearth if a man resident in tois country can be supposed to keep a spare one in Paris fired into the air; General Lawrence mis5ed him. and Mrs. Lawrence crowned the digrscful episode by formally eloping with ber German lover. General Lawrence returned to this country, but tbe fact tbat he had fought one, and possibly two bloodless duels previous to the Belgian affair, somewhat detracted from any credit he might have received for risking his life to avenge the injury done him, and he probably meets with little sympathy. A man in Saginaw county, Michigan, has made over 1.200 bushels of blackberries into wine. He paid from four to ten ceats per quart for them.
Whtn Wo Demoralise the Htonaeh By excesses or imprudence in eating we can nt hop to escape the consequences for any (Treat length of time. The mmt robust digestion must succumb to abuses of that imrtant function. But supposing that we have been foolish enough to enfeeble the stomach, is the damage irreparable? By no mean. The dyspeptic has only to do two things to insure hts ultimate recovery. First, he should adopt an easily digestible diet, (second, he should use with regularity and persistence Ilostetter's Stomach Bitters, the leading gostrio invlgorant of the age. The multiform symptoms of dyspepsia, and the almost Invariably attendant disorders, biliousness and constipation, will assuredly cease to persecute the sufferer if the above advice is attended to. Who tbat baa suffered the torments that chronic indigestion Inflicts will neglect to take advantage of a remedy which, if the most poUlve evidenced the medical profession and the public Is to be received with due credence, is an absolute specific for .the complaint.
Palatable, Powerfnl. Antfperlodle and Tonle. Ail the necessaries of a great popular remedy are combined in Clifford's Febrifuge. As a tonic, in debilitated states of system, this, remedy stands pre-eminently at tbe head. ,Yet it is more than is usually understood by that term, for no other preparation known exercises an eradicating power over intermittent diseases at all comparable with it. As it is probable that in the intervals of tbe paroxysms of these diseases a train of morbid actions is going out of our sight, so it is equally probable that this remedy produces in the same system an action equally mysterious, which supersedes that of the malady, and thus accomplishes the restoration of the patient. I:. Li rs r "A 1 L.1 fcVfc Bp an Immense practice, extending through a period of years, having within tbat time treated many thousand cases of thoe diseases peculiar to woman, I have been enabled to perfect a most potent and agreeable medicine that meets the indications presented by thatcl;issof diseases with positive certainty and exactness. To designate this natural 8ecifio compound, I have named it Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription. The term, however, is but a feehle expression of my high, appreciation of its value, based upon m j jwn personal observation. As a close olserver, I have, while witnessing iu positive resn!U in the few special diseases incident to the separate organism of wom.nv singled it out i the climax or crowning gem of my medical career. On its laerits, as a positive, safe, and effectual remedy f r this class of diseases, and one that will, at all times and under ail circumstances, act kindlv and in harmony wit, tbe laws which govern the iemale system, I am willing to stake my reputation as a physician. Nay, even more, so confident am 1 that K wiU not disappoint the most sangture expectations of a singte invalid lady who uses it for any of tne ailments for which I recommend it, that 1 offer and sell it under A POSITIVE GUARANTEE. If a beneficial effect is not experienced bv the time two-thirds of the contents of the bottle are used, I will, on return of the bottle, two thirds of the medicine having been taken according to directions, and the caso being one for which I recommend it, promptly refund the money paid for it. Had I not the most perfeet confidence in its virtues, I could not offer it as 1 do under thec conditions; but having witnessed its truly miracu Ions cures in thousands of cases, 1 feel warranted and perfectly af In risking both my reputation and my money ou Its merits. The following are among those diseases in which my Favorite Prescription has worked cures, as if by magic, and with a certainty never before attained br any medicine: L.eucorrhoea, Excessive Flowing Paiuful Monihlv Periods, Suppressions wlea from unnatural causes, Irregularities, Wean Dack, Prolapsus, or falling of the U terns, Anlcversion and Retroversion, Bearing Down Sensations, Internal Heat, Nervous Depression, Debility, Despondency, Threatened Miscarriage, Chronic Congestion. In explanation ot the remedial power of my Purgative Pellets over so great a variety of diseases, I wish to say that their action upon the animal economy ia universal, not a claud or tisnue escaping tbeir anative impren. Age does mi impair the properties ot ihcso Pellets. They are imgar-coated and inclosed in glass bottles, their Virtues being thereby preserved unimpaired for any length of time, la anv climate, eo that they are always fresh and reliable. This is not the case with, those pills which are put up in cheap wooden or iwsteboanl boxes. Recollect that lor all diseases where a Laxative, Alterative, or Purgative, i indicated, these little FeliCts will give the must perfect eauufacitoa to all who use them.
