HIKING. rnllfornia's ExbaasUesa vTeaitn. Th Rn Francisco correspondent of the New York Times, under date of August 9, : nm mm fnllnwa In a previous letter I expressed .n nnininn that the California and Contolilees so are the numerous holders ot tne stock. A dividend of $1 at the present price of the atnrk flo is a eootl interest on tne swqktatert is hardlv likely to pay a dlvi dend before September or October, as there ia atiil mnrh work to be done to put the mini in ennd troducine order. A mine is like a manufactory, it is necessary occasion' niiv to snanend o Derations to re pair marhinerv and wear and tear. wh;ia t An not advocate or ad Tise any one to purchase our stocks, I still contend that, taking the average, you can rt do much better on general results, if you can only afford to hold on, for it is almost a .artaintv that 3onr or later almost any .tvntr however low it mav bo. fairly out of miy it limpi i hound to come up again some day and enable the holder to realize mnnev invested, if not a handsome profit I have seen stocks go from $20 to 20 cents, and within a year to jump up again to If the fluctuations are great, so are the nrnnu. The chances in mining stocks are ?n nv n ni to those of legitimate business. for, according to statistics, only one merchant in a hundred succeeds, rna tne average in mining stock speculators is as good as that, ft not better. An advance in stocks is an advance 111 rents and a revival of every branch of business, as it puts money in cir1 culation people feel better, collections are hotter and in results evervbodv is benefited; nMi hpinc the case, we hail with ioy such a urn tn affair as the last few dsrs has illus trated. My next letter may quote stocks Hnu-n that are no to-dav: Quite likely; but it has had the effect to stir things up, bring more money into circulation, and do good generally. Anything for a change from the atairrtntion nf the cast six months. There 1 are many mines in California that pay, of which the public know little, the stock of which is not on the beards. Take the Idaho mine, of Grass Volley, for instance, which has lust declared its one hun dred and eighth dividend Of . $0 per hre. or 115.500 Der month in " to tal 443 500 about 500 per. cent, of the rash cost : and from present appearance the mine it will continue to pay for years to crnne. The stock is held in few hands nrt ia never offered for sale on the boards. The nresent dividend is less than usual on rennnt of dead work ot opening up for fntnre workinz. Tne followicg list of mines that aje but little known, and the amounts they have paid during the time specified, will serve to illustrate the value of our mining Interests, and show that we are by no means exhausted in our staple product, and that the granger is not the big Injun y et : HYDRAULIC MIXES PRODUCT 131 1ST7. There are a great many other small mines producing and paying handsomely on the capital invested. There are plenty of good mines that might be placed on the New York mining board with safety and confidence. We have not the capital to handle all of them, and it you are content with a dividend of say two per cent, a month under your own manage ment, such are plenty; but don't send out people who never sax a mine to select, nor pat scapegrace nephews to run them. Mining is a trade, and the difference between losing and a profit is as orten the fault of the management as tbe mine. Because you have made tuiatakts and purchased mines that have turned out swindles, Is no reason that you ran not find those that are really good and will prove profitable. It is the easiest thina- in the world to ascertain before purchasing, and it is not for the interest of those having the welfare and good nsme of California at heart to let you be swindled. - Tbe telegraph announced a few days since the death of Michael Reeseone of our well known millionaires a man who was J gen-

I remember on one occasion si mug at the same table with nim at a restaurant taking lunch, and having a good appetite ordered a dish that attracted bis. attention. Michael eyed it with some interest, and fin ally inquired what it was and how much it cost. When I tola uitu, u ww, looks goot, but I can't afford 50 sbents for one dish. How can you afford to spend SO much money on your dinner?" They tell a story on Michael which is said to be true--,t rm nt hisaranainUnces one day chaffed -him about his proverbial closeness, which irritated him. and he replied: "I tell you what I'll da I'll go uowh on tne ena m u wharf and throw $20 pieces into MS Day with you, and aee who holds oat de longest.' To all invalids who are looking for a bsIu brious place to pass the coming winter, we say come out here and go down the coast to Santa Barbara. Tho climate is lovely, the hotel excellent the fare unexceptionable, and the charges moderate about S15 per week and they will get more for their money than they ever got In their lives. Santa Barbara is no humbug, and I am not interested with Bromlev in the hotel, nor in any steamship lines. My advice is therefore nerfectlv disinterested.
