Apple Bloeuaoma. The orchard grass In sunshine barred, And starry white upon the sward The pretty daisies lie; I rest beneath a moswy tree, And through Its waving branches see The sapphire of the sky. I feet the balmy breeze of May Still blowing down the grassy way, And in the boughs above The little birds break Into song, And praise, in thrilling strains and strong, (Spring's halcyon days of love. The apple blossoms fall aronnd. And neck the daisy checkered ground As breezes softly blow; I stretch a lazy hand aloft, ' And grasp a cluster silken-soft. Like rosy tinted snow. I look at every tender leaf. And marvel why a life so brief To snch sweet things is given; Why not for them a longer pace To blossom gayly in their place Bsneatli the summer hea?en? Why not for them a longer time To IVel the sun at morning prime, To see the moon at night? To quiver by soft breeze stirred: To sing when Uod's morning bird Sing heavenword his delight? Ah me, my heart! it must be so! The blossom drops that fruit may grow; The sweetness of the flower Pies early on toe vernal breeze. That autumn time may hie s the trees With gold and crimson dower. Ah me, my heart! so must thou see The flowery hopes that gladden thee In this thy morning prime. Fade in the fair place where they grow, Drop round thee swiftly like the snow Of apple blossom time. But If they leave thee good and true. And pure as when they blossomed new, Then gladly let them go; Where now tbese fairy blossoms be. In (iod's good time thine eyes shall see Thy life's fair harvest glow!
To meet the demand for choice mutton In the English markets, our farmers must feed their sheep more liberally and produce bet ter quality of meat. According to Mr. Mechi, one pound of mutton is in general produced by the consumption of seven etunds of rape case, linseed cake or beans, r. Bruce asserts that a pound of oil cake eaten by a sheep of 130 pounds weight, reduces its consumption of roots by one-third, lie further states that the health of the sheep is greatly improved by the use of oil cake. English feeders can afford some practices that are impracticable for American farmers, since meat is higher with them than with us, Great discoveries are frequently made by obscure Individuals. The following, written by a correspondent of the Iloopeston (111.) Chronicle, pretends to emanate from a physician. Dr. Frankenbergtr writes as follows: "I desire to call attention to a disease commonly known in the west as twig blight. "When this disease overtakes a fruit tree the leaves first begin to blight, afterwards the twigs and limbs begin to wither and finally the whole tree slowly dies. Whatever may be the true cause of this disease, it is sometimes ascribed to a borer. My experience, however, refers more to the remedy than the cause. I know by experience that there is a simple remedy that will not fall to restore every tree atllicted with this disease If applied in time. It consists simply in boring with a small augur or bit into the body of the tree, tilling the cavity with sulphur, and plugging it in. The sap will -carry the sulphur tq every part of the tree, and when the borer smells brimstone he will 'git up and git.' The cause of the disease being removed, the tree will ' soon bfgln to put forth fresh and tender leaves, the withered foliage will slowly drop oft, and the tree in time will be restored to its natural growth." As the cause of the blight has not yet been discovered by any one else, we print the above so that those scientists who have fpr several years been hunting for it may know where to look. CcRiFci Balky Horses. Every "hoss doctor" can tell just how to cure a balky horse. We have seen everything tried, but only one thing succeeded invariably. It was told us 25 years ago by a returned Californian who called it the "California cure." Whether it actually cures of the habit we do not know, because the only balkv borae we ever owned was disposed of after two successful trials. As he did not balk for several weeks after the last trial, when his habit had been to have a fit of sulks two or three times a day previously, we judge that a fear of the consequences kept him on his good behavior. We have seen it tried on quite a number of balky animals, and they all started to their work. The remedy is simply to fill the horse' mouth with dry dust that is, a couple of fcood sized handiuls thrown In. Writers say that the horse balks because his mind is fixed on one idea too much, and that anything that will tend to change his thoughts will make him pull. We can't say as to the truthfulness of this theory; but. if anything will change a horse's thoughts, we should think that dust would. We do not assert that this treatment will be efficacious in every instance but it can be easily tried. Orchard Grass. Professor W. J. iJeal, of the Michigan agricultural college, writes to the Rural New Yorker concerning this grass as follows: Orchard grass has been well known for many generations in Europe, where it is a great favorite. In the,old country farmers pay large rents, and they are obliged to watch very closely the ex rentes and the income. They prefer orchard gras, cock's foot as they rail it, to timothy. In this new 'country, in Michigan and Illinois at least, it is astonishing to see the ignorance which prevails among farmers, as to orchard grass, .and many others of value. Orchard grass starts very early In spring, and gets its growth and produces flgwers three or four weeks before timothy. It grows about the same height as timothy, and, if sown thickly on suitable land, and cut at the proper time, will yield nearly, or quite, as much and sometimes more grass of about tbe same quality. It may be cat and must be cut early to make good hay. After cutting it starts very quickly and- is soon up resdy for cutting again, or for pastare a long time during the rest of the year. It bears pasturing well. For meadow or pasture I have known it to last ten or twelve years, and then appear thick and thrifty. Of well filled seed it takes from two to four bushels to the acre to produce a thick growth. It starts so early, and grows so fast, and flowers so toon that probably not one farmer in one hundred tbinks of cutting it as soon as it is ready. He waits for the clover to show more flowers or for good weather, or something else, or he is not used to haying BO early, and his orchard grass is going to seed before he knows it. lie cuts the grass, cares it, and finds the hay poor and woody. I believe the bay Is often condemned beetuse the mowing was not done at the proper time. Orchard grass is worthy of a good trial on every farm or in every neighborhood. I have within the past ten years induced a large number of farmers to give it a trial on a small scale. 1 have visited some of their farms, and have frequently talked with the owners. The grass has been tried on quite a variety of soils Of those wbo have been influenced by me t try orchard pr&ssl have jet to hear the first c-ise where it has not given excellent satisfaction, whether used one year two years, or many; whether sown for meadow or pasture; whether sown alone or with led clover, timothy or other forage plants. Let all give it a trial, study its pe culiarities, and do not condemn it without good reasons. Professor Shelton tells us that it is one of tbe best for producing hay in Kansas and Nebraska. Btackixo Grais. During a short ride of twenty five miles on the cars a few days ago. we could not help but observe that half the grain in stacks was very insecurely put up. In many instances the stacks leaned to one side, and consequently pie Bbc&Yes on tbe upper tide were eo placed

Every nurseryman will attend to this at once. It is a very easy manner of changing the variety of a bearing tree, or of introducing new sorts. As soon as the outer bark separates from the inner freely, is the time. Make a T shaped incision in the bark; loosen the edges with a sharp knife; then cat the bud with a thin piece of bark, half an inch long adhering, force it down into the slit, ana tie with yarn, cotton string, or basswood. Leave the stem of the leaf on the bud. When this falls, remove the tie, and the job is done. Of coarse, if the bud grows next spring, as it should, tbe wood above the bad must be cat away. Thjs is usually done peacemeal, so as not to shock the tree by too much pruning at once. The Trne Story-of John Brown. Baltimore Bun London Letter.1 There has been a great deal of violent expression indulged in regarding an honest and trustworthy servant of Queen Victoria's, known the world over as John Brown. This man is a quiet, sober, middle aged and conscientious body servant of the queen. He goes where she goes, and where few, if any, of her other servants are permitted to go. Why? The majority of English servants, from the palace to the plain residence in England, are great sticklers about their E roper duties. The butler would see the itclien on fire and the cook the pantry flooded before interfering in saving the property of their employer, simply because it was not in their department. John Brown is above such narrow prejudices. If her majesty has to go anywhere, have anything done, from a cup of tea to the packing of a trunk, from the selection of a horse to the purchasing of a book, John Brown is always on hand, ready, able and willing to bound over all the barriers of red tape and formal departments and get and do these things or see that they are done promptly and proper ly, in this readiness and nntmng attend ance, he has ingratiated himself with the good queen, who fully values his honest energy and integrity, and who has thus made him her favorite gillie. He knows his place and keeps it. He earns his pay and pockets It. Serve an Iajnnellon on DlfteaM By invigorating a feeble constitution, renova ting a debilitated physique, and enriching a thin and in nutritious circulation with Hostetter's Htomach Bitters, the finest, the most highly sanctioned, and the most popular ton lo and preventive in existence. It strengthens the stomach, remedies torpor of the liver and bowels, and gives a healthful impulse to the secretive and dlschaiging functions of the kidneys and bladder. Not only does it arrest and prevent the recurrence of malarial fevers, but it furnishes the only adequate safeguard against them to persons who have never heen aitllcted ' with these maladies, but would be liable to incur them if medicinally unprotected. It eliminates from the blood certain impurities which the most skillful pathologists assign as the exciting causes of those agonizing complaints, rheumatism and gout, and it is, moreover, an excellent remedy for an enfeebled or overwrought state of the nerves, and for mental despondency. A Card. To all who are suSerlng from the error; and indiscretions of youth, nervous weakness, early decay, loss of manhood, etc, I will send a receipt that will care yom. Free of Charge. This great remedy was discovered by a missionary in South America. Send a self-addressed envelope to the lie v. Joseph T. Inman, Station D, Bible Hoaae, New York City. Palatarble, Powerful, An tf periodic and Toiile. All the necessaries of a great popular rem edy are combined in Clifford's Febrifuge. As a tonic, in debilitated states of system, this remedy stands pre-eminently at the head. Yet it is more than is usually understood by that term, for no other preparation known exercises an eradicating power over intermittent diseases at all comparable with it. As it is probable that in the intervals of the paroxysms of these diseases a train of morbid actions is going out of our sight, so it is equally probable that this remedy produces in the same system an action equally mysterious, wnich supersedes that of tbe malady, anl thus accomplishes the restore tion ot the patient. J. C. Kichard805, Proprietor, St. Louis. For sale by all druggists. Fromthe National Journal of Education Boston, Mass. A movement in the right direction has been inaugurated by Dr. Virgil W. Blanchard, who has been a contributor of several valuable papers to tbe Breton Medical and Surgical Journal, and now is engaged in the advancement of the Food Cure System, designed to supplant the use of drugs in. the treatment of all debilitated conditions. The system is a series ot concentrated liquids, manufactured principally frem the Wheat Kernel, concentrated and artificially digested by processes well known to science. We have not space to go at length into the common sense theories, but have pleasure in saying that the evidences of the value of these Foods are conclusive. Our well known Rev. Dr. Austin Phelps, of Andover, indorses the Life Food highly; Professor John Clark, of Oberlin, has received great benefit; numberless physicians from all parts of the country, as well as hosts of private individuals, testify to the curative effects of the Blanch a rd Foods. See advertisement. Consumption Cured. An old physician, retired from practice, having bad placed in his bands by an East India missionary the formula of a simple vegetable remedy, for the speedy and permanent cure of consumption, bronchitis, catarrh, asthma and all throat and lung affections, also a positive and radical cure for nervous debility and all nervous complaints, after having tested its wonderful curative powers in thousands of cases, has felt it his duty to make it .known to his suffering fellows. Actuated by this motive, and a desire to relieve human suffering, I will send, free of charge, to all who desire it, this recipe, with full directions for preparing and using, in German, French or English.
