EXECUTIVE OLEMESOY.
Eewons Why Certain Pardons Been Granted. Hare Tli Governor's Course Will Receive the Approval of All Falr-Mlnded Men. In consequence of the effort of the republican press and politicians of Indiana to bring the executive of the state into disrepute on account of thegrantiog of certain pardons, the Sentinel herewith publishes the following. No further explanation is necessary: the abram3 cask. The State ok Indiaxa. ") Executive If.fT, Governor's Office, -Ijhia-ai"OLIS, July 3, lf7S. J No. 4 i0. Exparte William J. Abrams. Application for rnrdon. After due consideration the governor decided as follows: William J. Abraras, who wan convicted in the Marion criminal circuit court of the crime of murder, and sentenced on the 18th day of September, I?, to be ino prisoned for the term of his natural life, pardoned July 3, 178, and released from confinement in the state prison north. DecMon : By the Governor. The papers before me in support of this application were received June JH. 1875. Acertined transcript contains tbe following: "We, tlvs Jury, find the defendant, VMim J. Abrams, guilty of murder in the first degree, as charged in the Indictment, and thai he be confined in the state prison for life. James H. Turner, foreman." Accompanying said verdict is the following recommendation, to-wlt: "We, the underpinned jurymen In the case of the state vs. William J. Abrams. bavin In the discharge of our dnty and under the solemnity of our oaths found the defendant guilty of murder in the first degree, yet believing that the crime committed by him was the result of wicked influence surrounding him and not the result of a bid heart, we would respectfully nk the governor to commute his sentence to ten (10) years' Imprisonment. James II. Turner, foreman; E. Copeland, John Horton, William Jennings, A. C.Carr, Gorge W. Huston, James Davis. J. S. Brown, Thomas M. Harbin, William Mills, Franklin Hall." Eight jurors have signed a petition for the defendant's pardon. Citizeus of Marlon county br petitions ask that he may be par -rioued and set at liberty. A full and particular statement of the facts of the case Is made by counsel engHged in the trial. On the 13th day of septemiter, iMjS, the dead bodies of Jacob Young and Nancy Jane Young, his wife, were found at Cold Spring, on the bank of White river, near the citv of Indianapolis. Suspicion tell upon Mrs. Nancy E. Clem, her brother i-Mlas A. Hartman; and the defendant. Mm. t lriu, has been d:charg-d after several trials. Hartman committed suicide while in confinement in the jail of Marion county awaiting his trial, on Tuesday, Heptemler J5, IStjK, Ab-nms was arretted upon a justice's warrant, ami, without a preliminary examination, was committed to jail to await the action of the grand jury. The trial commenced August 31, and resulted as heretofore stated. The argument concludes as follows: "We believe we are safe In the assertion that were Abrams to be tried now upon the very same testimony produced against him on the trial, any jury would without hesitation acquit him. We desire to call your special consideration to the fct that the jury was out nearly three days deliberating upon their verdict, and when finally returned it, it was accompanied by a recommendation to executive clemency, after Imprisonment of tea years. If Abrams was really guilty of the atrocious crime chanted against him, the punishment provided by law would be Just. Why, then, if the jury lelieved him guilty, did they recommend him to mercy? This, In our miuds, is conclusive that the Jurors were not convinced leyond reasonable doubt of his auilt. While they were perhaps uueonsclously influenced by the prevalent public sentiment and convicted him. they were desirous of relieving themselves of a burden by the recommendation to mercy. We therefore ask your excellency to give the pending application speedy consideration and relieve William J. Abiams from further Imprisonment, believing thai thereby the cause of Justice will be subserved." My predecessor, before retiring from office, made the following indorse ment of opinion: "I have examined this case with much care and have decided that If no further Jiaht bethrown upon the transaction with which he is connected the prisoner shou'd be pardoned at the end of this year of his term. 1 am not satisfied that his guilt was sufficiently stablished. He has been falling in bodily and mental strength. 1. A. 11. "Januarys, 1377." I have examined the case several times and at the last examination fixed npon this as a proper time to grant the prayer of the petitioners. ihe warden reports that the prisoner s conduct has been un exceptionally good during his confinement in prison. The pardon is granted. J. I. W. The papers in the exe, namely: (1) transcript or the verdict and recommendation or the jurv: (Tt recommeudatioii of eight Jurors: statement ot facts and argument by counsel; (It petition by citizens of Marion county; () petition by citi.ens of trite township, Marlon county; and () report of warden, were listed nnd transmitted to tue secreiary or state. 0 Theforeeoinc Is a full codv of the entrv made In the record kept by me and is furnish d for publication by the governor's per mission. SA.MI KL H. UOWNF.Y, J uly 'J, 1S78. Secretary. THE BRIDGES CASK. William C. Bridges, who was convicted In . the Marion criminal circuit court of the crimes of robbery and assault and battery, with in tent lo kill and murder, and sentenced on the 5th day of June, l.st,7, to be imprisoned for the term of fourteen years: pardoned July 3, 1878, and released from confinement in the state prison north. Decision: By the Governor. Theprl.sonerhns now served moie than eleven years of his terms of sentence. The warden reports that hi.s conduct for the last six and a half years has leen good, but prior to t hat .was very bad." In August last the prison physician reported as follows: "William Bridges, an ln- . mate of the Indiana state prison north, has been examined by me and been under treatment since my appointment to office. He lias a very bad pro'apsus of the bowels, the rectum extending six to eight inches beyond the anus wheuever he strains hard. For months be has been unable to have a passagb without the use of an injection by the rectum. There is a constant inflammation of the catarrhal form in the lower bowel, causing him topics blood and water, which inflammation from slight provocation extends to the intestines above. He sutlers from indigestion all the time, and bis bowels and liver are torpid. This, which is his greatest trouble, impairs general nutrition, leaving htm in a weakened, debilitated condition and liable to contract other diseases and little able to withstand tnem. He suffers also from neuralgia of the left side and frequent palpitations of the neart, caused doubtless by his enfeebled health, there being no organic disease of the heart or lungs at present. He has frequent attacks of bronchitis, which Is now chronic and i quite anaemic, that Is, his blood is impoverished by the ossof red corpuscles. Tlie Hon. George H. Chapman writes: "Aout the 5th day of Jane, 17, one William Erldges alias Hoosier Kill, was tried before me, as judge of the criminal court of Marlon county, on a charge of robbery, and sentenced to 14 years imprisonment. At the same time lie plead guilty to a charge of assault and battery with Intent to kill lotli offences growing out of the same transaction and a like sentence was imposed to run parallel with the sentence in the robbery case. A letter Is now shown me -dnted August 2, 1877, from the then physician of the pnon in regard to said Bridges' health. I am also informed that his conduct has been Much daring a number of years pat that, under the rules of the prison, so much of a diminution of seotence has been worked that be baa now but a year to serve or less, if this information Is correct, and If his hea tb it now similar to what it wm when the letter referred to was written, I have no hesitation In recommending the interposition of executive clemency to relieve him from tbe residue of ills term of service. The present Judge and prosecuting attorney of the court Join in the recommendation because of the prisoner's reported bad health. Two of the county commissioners, the present . wheriJT, treasurer, and auditor of Marion county, the gentleman who was sheriff in lsoT and the present and a former chief of police of InUauapolis request, a pardon. The pardon Is granted. J.D. W. o The foregoing 1 a fall copy of the decision entered in the ofncfcil record In my custody, and Is furnished for publication by the governor's permission. .HAMi r.l. It. Pownev, July V, 178. Secretary. THE IKVIXO CASE. William L. Irving, who was convicted In the Marion criminal circuit court of the crime of bigamy, and sentenced on the 1st day of May. 17. to be Imprisoned for the term of ninety days, pardoned June ls78, and released from imprisonment In the Jail of Marion county. V DFXISIOIT BY THE OOVERJTOR. The judge and the clerk of the court, the sheriff and auditor of Marion county, and ethers, have signed a petition reciting the fact
of the defendant's conviction and sentence.
and representing to me that he has heretofore borne a good character and belongs to a good and highly respectable family; that bis parents are aged, and sick at tbls time; and. further, that said Irving has paid the fine and costs, and they respectfully but earnestly pray a pardon for him of the remaining portion of said term. The prosecuting attorney writes: "I recommend the pardon of William L. Irving, upon the ground that his onense was not of such a character as to call for vindictive punishment, yet it was a clear violation of tlie criminal law. It was upon that ground that the punishment was placed at the lowest point permitted bylaw, and aa the law has be,en vindicated, and defendant has heretofore home good character, executive clemency will not be misplaced. The prisoner has served seventy days. The prayer of the officers who procured the conviction ana entered me juugmen; is entitled to respect. The pardon is granted. J. 1. W. A true copy, famished by the governor' permission. Samuel. R. Downey. secretary. THEJOI1XSOS CASE. Caleb Johnson, who' was convicted In the Marlon criminal circuit court of the crime of grand larcenv and sentenced on the 26th day of June, 1877, to be imprisoned for the term of two years, pardoned July x, !, anu reieaseu from confinement In tbe state prison norm. Decision : By tlie Governor. Tlie petition ior the prisoner's pardon Includes the Judge and clerk of the court, several jurors, two of the Judges of the superior court of Marion county, my immediate predecessor in omce, anu oiuer members of the bar and citizens of the county. They say: "We are informed and believe that since bis imprisonment he bas condncted himself quietly and peaceably, nnd in such a way as to satisfy us that he has already been Tuulsbed enough; that. If released, be will In the future keep out of bad company and behave himself. We are also informed that he is, to a certain amount, the support and aid of a widowed mother whom he aided by his work and labor while he was at liberty, and to whom be was a dutiful and loving son. He is young; has been in prison now some time. For all of the above reasons we would respectfully ask that toe b granted a pardon." The application was made March 22. I fixed upon the expiration of 13 months sa proper time to comply with the prayer. The warden reports that bis conduct is good. The pardon la granted. J. D. W. A true copy furnished by permission of the governor. Samuel R. Downey, . Secretary. INDIANA INTELLIGENCE. Owing to the cheapness of oats there la a general demand that hordes should be hitched in the streets of Lafayette. Balloonatics are at a discount in Evansville, although there is a hope necks may te broken. The coroner also has an interest. A Floyd county deputy sheriff always smiles when he makes an arrest, and very frequently between times. His name is Myers. Edinburg Courier: F. G. White, the fa vorite and venerable comedian, is to dedi cate the Sullivan opera house as soon as completed. General Grose is after renegade republicans, but there seems to be a doubt lest they get after him, especially where his escapade is 0 well known. The old settlers of eastern Indiana will hold their annual grand basket reunion at the fair grounds in Centerville, Wayne county, on baturday, August 3, ls. Anna Downs, a well known negro woman of New Albany, died Saturday morning at 4 o'clock, at her home on Lower Fifth street, near Elm, from the e fleets of a dose of arsenic. Columbus Republican: The elevator received about 100 loads of grain Saturday. There were about".) loads of wheat, amounting to mar 4,000 bushels, and 2 loads of corn. This is the biggest day's work ever done at the elavator. Greencastle Star: The elevations and ground plans for the proposed new church edifice of the Roberts chapel congregation are on exhibition at D. L. Southard's store. The structure can be finished for $10,000, and as Mr. Frank Nelson proposes to furnish one quarter of the necessary amount there is hope that it will be erected in short order. Peru Republican: The time lock of the First natinal bank safe was taken out to be cleaned one week ago last Thursday, and when tlie door of the 6afe was closed the bolt held it bo t ecu rely that it could not be opened for more than a week. It was necessary to bring experts from Cincinnati, with the best tools, and drill through tbe door before the bolt could bg moved. TOPICS OF THE SEASON. They say that the voice of Alex Stevens is so weak that it is In danger of being taken for the phonographic copy of somebody else's. . Mrs. General Ixyran and Mrs. Senator Oglesby, of Illinois, are working hard, the one to get and the other to keep a senatorship in tbe family. "If I had killed the minister of finance I'd have got no more," said Freret when he was sentenced at Tar is to imprisonment for life at hard labor for forging government bonds. General Grant once made some pretentions a9 an artist. There are a number of paintings from his brush in existence, one of which is owned by ex-Secretary Borie. Washington's will is kept in a glass case In the office of the clerk of Fairfax county, Virginia. The writing has almost all faded away, and tbe paper is so frail that it will not bear handling. Insults to imperial German majesty have been prosecuted with vigor and dispatch of recent, and German journals report sentences for this offense, in four weeks, aggregating 47b years of imprisonment. An Alabama court is called upon to decide whether a prisoner can legally bo worked outside of the walls of the penitentiary (in a chain gang or on the estate of a lessee of convict labor), and whether a prisoner thus employed can not claim his liberty. The line of sea food at a Long Branch hotel is as follows: Clsm chowder, clam fritters, stewed clams, little neck clr.ms raw, broiled bluefJsb, broiled sea bass, raw Shrewsbury oysters, stewed and fried oystars, and stewed blackhsh; all of which is very fine. Tbe golden wheat Is falling in graceful swaths before the swinging cradles of tbe farmer. Tbe quail in tbe stubble whistles his cheery note. The farmer himself occasionally walks wearily to the blackberry bush near the fence and takes a long pull at the jug; that swaths the matter. New Hampshire proposes to send tramps who kindle fires on land without tbe owner's permission to prison for 1-5 months; if they carry fire arms the sentence will be two years; if they do malicious injury either to personal or real estate it will be fire, and $10 bounty will be paid for every tramp convicted. The country from Canyon City to Pilot Rock, over which the Indians recently swept, is a desolate waste. Not a building Is standing; hundreds of starving coits are whinnying beside their dead dams; all tbe cattle were killed for the sake of their tongues, and tbe Indians bare chopped off just below tbe knees the forelegs of every sheep they could catch. In a brief note to the Augusta (Ga.) Chronicle, declining pome invitation, Governor Vance, of North Carolina, emphatically expresses his opinion of "independents." He says: "The great and only danger to our farty (the democratic) arises from so called dependents. If we can not maintain discipline the party will go to pieces, and we
should begin by punishing the offenders in high places, not the aspirants for minor offices. The general should be dealt with, before the private."
Dr. Carver, the glass i-all rifle shot, spent thrilling and thoroughly dime novel youth. His father, mother, brothers and sister were massacred by the Sioux in Min nesota and he taken captive, to be brought np in the tribe. A life of nineteen years as a nomad with the rifle, his most loved com panion, gave him the wonderful skill recently exhibited. At sunset of a day last week, David Fharoab, king of the remnant of tbe tribe of Montauk Indians, and the last full blooded Indian of his tribe, stretched himself npon the couch in his cabin at Montauk Point, a high promontory on the eastern extremity of uods Island,- against which the waves of the Atlantic beat with great violence, and died. Staggering under tbe weight of years, and an attack of a disease which the medicine men told him he could not recover from, he begged to be carried where he could look npon the village of Montauk once more before he died. His wish was gratified, and on his return his epirit went upon its journey to the happy hunting grounds. He was a soldier in the Union amy during tbe war, and was a somewhat noted pedestrian. An old phytician, retired from practice, haviDg had placed in his hands by an East India missionary the formula of a simple vegetable remedy, for the speedy and permanent cure of consumption, bronchitis, catarrh, asthma and all throat and lung affections, also a positive and radical cure for nervous debility and all nervous complaints, after having tested its wonderful curative powers in thousands of cases, bas felt it his duty to make it known to his sutfering fellows. Actuated by this motive, and a desire to relieve human suffering, I will send, free of charge, to all who desire it, this recipe, with full directions for preparing and using, in German, French or Knslish.
