Tnis week may fairly be called the beginmug of the Saratoga season. None of the hotels are fall, bat visitors are coming In in swarms. The reeisterj at the principal ho-tel.-the Grand Union and the United States number about CO a day. At this rate it will not take them long to fill up. There is not much doing yet, socially, but the first ball of the season, which is to be given at the Grand Union hotel this week, will open the social season. There are a great many visitors here families who do not seem to be acquainted with anybody else. But 9o or 1003 wil make brothers of them all. It does not tike long for visitors to learn that tbe great points of Saratoga are the hotels, the springs, tbe drives and the park. Beyond these and the incidentals connected with them there is nothing worth mention. The hotels are certainly the finest in America. Some of the city hotels may be more elegint, but tney can not have "the great cou.t yards, covered with gr&us and flowers, ana ornamented with fountains and statuary, which are among the most pleasant features of the Saratoga houses. Toe Grand Un oa hotel, owned hy the Stewart estate, holcts 2,000 people comfortably, and seats 1,500 in its endless dining room. The United States holds 1.500, and scats 1,000 in tbe diningroo:n. Tne Mansion house and Congress hall are also immense. And they are all eWaatly appointed. There is no comfort or luxury to be bad in any hotel in the world that is not to be had here. Cut it has to be paid for. The Grand Union and United States, the two great Saratoga rivals, charge $5 a day. Congress hall has reduced its terms to $3; but it can not compete with the two firat named io elegance, although it is fully their equal in comfort. But what's the D33 of coming to Saratoga without making the money fly? A man might as well make up his mind to it himself before he conies as have some body else satisfy him of tbe fact before he goes away. Stilt, it Is no more expensive than Long Branch, and cheaper than cottage life in Newport. And speaking of covrazes life brines up the fact that there are no cottage here, mnch to the satisfaction of the noted botel proprietors But Saratoga is as full of boarding houses as Waverly place. They can re found at any price from $ a week to $50. The advertisement of one of them, in a Saratoga paper, is a good illustration of the alleged "style" of some of them: Mrs. , of place, receives boarders for the season. Her object is to combine the comforts of a private home with the society of per8odm of tuh social standing. First claxs references given aud required. All Saratogians insist that it is the springs that bring people to the hotels; but I am quite sure that it is the hotels that bring people to the springs. The spring water is all cathartic, tonic or alterative, and, no doubt, is very good medicine in man casts if properly taken. But anybody must have a very peculiarly constructed intf rior who can go to the Congress springs and drink two or three glasses of cathartic, then to the Columbian and take as much tonic, and then to the Hamilton and finish off with a glass or two of alterative. This is what they all do. A Saratoga visitor considers the day waited unless he has a taste of a'.l the spring, and there are eighteen of the large ones, including the Geyser, which is a mile out cf town. The old story that a man can drink Saratoga spring water all day is very nearly true. There is no trouble at all in drinking live or six glasses before breakfast. But if thee glasses are all out of the Congress springs, look out for trouble. Many of the drives are beautiful, and there are a great many of theui abont Saratoga. There is a gocd one to tbe race CDurs, a mile: another to Glen Mitchell, another mile; to Greenridge cemetery; a very fine one to the lake, lour miles, graveled and constantly sprinkeltd all the way: another to BaHston Spa; another to the White Sulphur Spring, ten miles, past the lake, and a long one, twelve miles to Schuylerville and the bittle ground. These roads are almost as full of fine equipages in the cool hours of the day as Central park on a fine afternoon. Carriages are hired for $2 an hour, the same as at the other summer resort?, which is reasonable enough under the circumstances, but a daily drive soon runs up a heavy bill. The park Congress Spring park is a very pretty little place, lookiDg much like some parts of Central park ; but I can see no rearoa why us owners should charge ten cents for admission to it in the daytime and twenty cents in the evening. The Congress and Columbian springs are both in it, bat by an ingenious arrangement of tbe fences they can -be reached without entering the park. Saratoga's ten churches are all open on Sundays, but they are not overrun with attendants. There is, besides, a noon day prayer-meeting, which is better attended than might be supposed. I went in yesterday, expecting to see some of the hotel proprietors there, but there were none, and not even a railroad man. n , There is more life and bustle about the streets here than I have seen in any watering place this season. And the same may be said of the hotels. In the cool of the evening the long piazzas are full, and the streets are lively with carriages, a majority of them, I should think, private turnouts. The 4lrl la Vienna. Correspondence Chicago Times. People do little else in Vienna except to eat and drink old wine and beer. The ladies io general dresi very richly, wearing soft silks and exquisite laces at dinner parties. Jewels, too, are never lacking, and are always orn with good taste. The young girls, or ladies, I should say, from fifteen to twenty, have the most perfect forms imaginable. Their waists are round and slender, the shoulders slope with Venus-like accuracy, but the bust is the crowning beauty. I never saw anything to equal the Vienneoise decollate. It is the form and development of a -woman with tne face of a young girl; but what perfection. Modesty forbids my e x plain Jng further, but one can not imagine any more charming picture than the Kght of a perfectly formed creature, mod estly attired, yet sufficiently a la mode w only half conceal the charms of faultlessly developed womanhood. 1 have a weakness for beauty myself, and never see a slender vaiit and skjpely band but I think "what a gift is coT-fltliaess:" and when, as In Vienna, the hand nonly half the beauty of the neck and arms, 1 thin that the fashion of dressing the young maidens in the Austrian capitol something quite perfect Usually they -wear white and fleecy tolds of soft tulle adorning every 'corsage" (waist). The arms ra aiwavs bare from the elbow, and somelimes entirely so from the shoulder. Up to the present I have never seen but the most perfectly shaped hands and arms, and the ilender waists that look so white and beautini or like carved marble or the pictures in m ' 4-hm, Miiorv of the Hasrue in Holland. We ' can see that the Flemish and German artists have not far to look for their models. At rtraaent all the ladies wear black Vine like those known by the name f fixfnrd ties and il not always apppro- ' ..t. it i much more convenient and Cheaper, although the general richness o(

toilet hardly suggests the idea of economy. Now th picture changes. Many of the fattest women I have ever seen .re the young married women of Vienna, from twenty-one to twenty-eight or thirty. Their waists have more than doubled in size. Their appetites are enormous, and tbe quantity of wines, beer and champaigns they drink is unbelievable. Still I have seen it on more than one occasion, and one never doubts the evidence of their own eyes, do they? I have now been here some little time, and have never yet seen a young married couple. All tbe gsy youths of forty and thereabouts have young wives, and many a good looking fellow has a wife old enough to be hit mother.

The French In Cars nl Omnibuses. Correspondence Philadelphia Bulletln.l The French generally are very talkative in the cars and omnibuses, and manifest a common interest in each other. .Recently an old lady entered a tramway near tbe 1'lace de la Concorde, with tbe intention of going to the exposition. When tbe conductor came around for the necessary centimes the old lady became a little befuddled as to where she wanted to go, and immediately the whole of the passengers became interested in her behalt and began plying her with questions with the Intention of setting her aright It seemed a great relief to everybody when the aged passeDger was safely landed at her destination, and eager eyes followed her as she left the car. Many incidents might be given In this particular, showing tbe bond of sympathy existing among the people. Itentfal Sights, Days Free from Tort are Await the rheumatic sufferer who resorts to llostetter'a Ston-sch nltters. That this benignant cordial and depurent la a far more reliable remedy than colctiicura aud other poisons used to expel the rheumatic vims from the blood, is a fact that experience has satisfactorily demonstrated. It also eDjoys tbe advantage of being, unlike them, perfectly safe. With many persons' a certain predlxposition to rheumatism exists, which renders them liable to its attacks after exposure in wet weather, to currents of air, changes of temperature, or to cold when the body is hot. Much persons should take a wineglass or two of ihe Bitters as soon as possible after incurring risk from the a Dove causes, as this superb protective effectually nullities the hurtful influence. For the functional derangements which accompany rheumatism, such as colic spasms in the stomach, palpitation of the heart, imperfect digestion, etc.. the Bitters Is also a moKt useful remedy. It is only necewary in obstinate cases to use it with iTistency. Clifford Febrifuge. In the cure ef fever and ague this remedy displays extraordinary powers. Prom their wonderful cathartic Kwor, In comparison to their size, people who have not tried them are apt to suppose that they are harsh or drastic in effect: but such is not at all tlie case, the iliflerent active medicinal principles of which thev are coniioscd being so harmonized and modilied, one bv the others, as to produce a moat searching and thorough, yet sreir77y aud kiudly operating, cathartic. $300 Reward is hereby offered by the prone:or of these Pellets, to a;iv chemist who, upon analysis, will lind In them any calomel or other form of mercury, mineral poison, or injurious drug. He in r entirely vegetable, no particular care is required while Using them. They operate without disturbance to the constitution, diet, or occupation. For Jaundice, Headache Constipation, Imptiro mood, Pain In t!ie Mtouldera, XiKbtiieMa of the Cheat, Dizziness, Sour Lructatious from the ftlumacli, Had ta.to in tbe mouth, IlilIoum attacks, Pain In rceioii of Klducys, Internal fever, Uloated feeling nbout Momadi, ltah of lilood to llend. High-colored Urine, Unsociability and Gloomy Forebodings, take Dr. Pierce's Pleaaut Purpatlve Pollet. In explanation of the remedial power of my Purgative Pellets over bo great a variety of dica?cs, I wish to sav that their actlou upon the animal economy is universal, not a Hi aud or tissue escaping their sanative Imprew. Age does not i:apair the projierties ot these Pellets. They are suvar-coated and inclosed In glass bottle, their virtues being thereby prcs-erved unimpaired for any length of time, 'in anv climate, eo that they are alwavs fresh and reli'iblc This is not the case with thbse pills whicli are put up in cheap wooden or pasteboard les. Recollect that fer all riieate where a Laxative, Alterative, or Purgative, is ir.tiica.ed, these little Pelieu will give the most perfect batisfactioa to all who use them. They are sold by all Druggists at 25 cents a bottle, 8. V. II. D., Prop'r, DUFFALO, N. T THE GREAT ENGLISH REMEDY! CSATS SPECIFIC ITECICETS . TRADE MARK. .
