BEAUTIES OF COLORADO.
Ibe Hajestle HoarataUns snl Awfal Gorges. Canon City Correspondence Chicago Time. Here I am in the wild fastnesses of the Colorado mountains and only a couple of u clays from Chicago. It seems incredible, but the modern locomotive is a magician that annihilates space. The run from Chicago over the Chicago, Burlington and (jaincy and the Kansas City, St Joe and Council Bluffs railroad to Atchison, la a remarkably pleasant one, and the accom- - modations of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fee road, which carries the traveler to this 1 point, leave nothing to be desired. The line of the latter road traverjcs the magnificent valley of the Arkansas river, whose surpassIn; richness has earned for it the title of the "Garden of the Continent," and which, owing to the liberal policy of the land department of this road is rapidly filling up with aa enterprising and industrious population. The change of scenery from the comparatively level farming lands of southwestern Kansas to the rugged detiles nd the distant glimpse? of the loity mountain ranges where tbe road commences the ascent of the foot bills, is particularly interesting, especially as it is enjoyed in Connection with all the C09y comforts of a palace car and the superior conveniences of this sptendid road. Canon City is 40 miles west of Putbto, and at an elevation of 5,200 feet above the sea level. The rough cones and jagged clifli form a sort of amp' theater around tbe place, and in the distance the towering ranges .1 1 r . 1 .... ' Ik.,'. anm. nil l iuifcy ptruars jiuc bucu summits into tbe region of eternal sunshine. Away to the north Is Pike's Teak, flanked by Cheyenne mountain on the one sioe and Cameron's Cone on the other, while the western and southern horizon is shut out by the bald, bare peaks of the San Juan and Spanish niouutain ranzes. Within the last two years Canon City has become noted as a remarkably lavorable resort for consumptives and inva lids troubled with any lung diseases. This class of patients usually make the mistake of seeking too great an attitude where the air -is too light and rarefied; but .experience V seems to show that the elevation of Canon City is a happy medium, giving of the benefits of an equable temperature with pure dry air, without the disadvantage of higher locations. The bright, clear, bracing air acts on tbe frame like champagne, and tbe neighborhood is plentifully supplied witn mineral springs, whose vertues are, as yet, hardly appreciated. The place already boat's two or three very good hotels and the usual variety of business houses, as well as a anntvlir f I a r new a WW rn m A1 1in a TSYI the benefit of tourists visiting the numerous canons which radiate from this place, and from which tbe city takes its name. The principal of these is the Grand Canon of the Arkansas, whose entrance is just west of the town. Then there are the Grape Creek, the Temple, Marble Cane, Oil Creek, Oak Creek and Talbott Hill canons, all within a radius of 15 miles. This p'ace now forms a base of supplies and is connected by good stage roads with the mining districts around Leadville and Ore City at the headwaters of the Arkansas, about MiO miles to the northwest, and also with the San Juan mining country, about 150 miles west. With commendable enterprise the Atchison, Topcky and Santa Fe railroad is pushing forward its line to the last mentioned points. The route as surveyed follows the course of the river west from Canon City through the Grand canon with its majestic scenery, a distance of six niilei, when the waits of the canon approach each other and form what is known as the Royal Gerge. This gorye is two miles in length, aud tie perpendicular walls rise from the rushing torrent below to a height of from 1.500 to 2.500 feet. Anything mora precipitous and sublime in its proportions and surroundings it is almost impossible to conceive. At some places the walls are only twenty-four feet apart. The road through this gorge will be built on heavy iron girders let into tie solit walls and k thus bridging the chasm its entire length, and will ba a triumph of engineering skill. In making the preliminary surveys it was found necessary to lower the surveyors from the top of the gorge by ropes. It requires a steam nerve and a strong head to look into the ct) asm. The rushing and roaring of tbe mighty stream is not heard from the top and only a silver thread is seen winding its way through the rocks nearly half a mile below After parsing the gorge the tides ot the can'on recede agiin, forming what is known as .Pleasant valley, through which the road rum till it reacbes a settlement called South Arkansas, at tbe junction ot tbe South Arkansas river with the main branch, and a -distance of 57 miles from Canon City. From here the road will be continued up the Arkansas river to Leadville, a distance of sixty-three miles. Besides forming an outlet to the mining districts at this point, this line will open up a new country for the tourist and it will bring him within a few hours ride of the celebrated Twin Lakes, which have been pronouueed by all who have visited them as the most charming bodies of water to be found in the west. It would require a volume to give anything like a detailed description of the 'wouders to be seen in and about Canon City. 1 have therefore not alluded to tbe extensive coal mines Irom which the mamxaoth block of bituminous coal, weigbfng ever seven tons, was cut that was exhibited at the Philadelphia centennial, nor to the oiL wells from which Oil creek takes Its Dame. These wells, although producing considerable oil from the surface, have never been regularly bore J. Preparations in this direction are now being made, however, and the yield promises to begird. I am also tempted to describe the beauties of Temple Cave Curiosity Hill, the Bottle llcks, Jind the peaks known as the Twin Ports. Then there is tbe Marble Cave, with a perpendicular descent of one hundred feet, in which the visitor is shown Satan's Bower and Punch Bowel, and his Arm Chair, as well as the Queen's Grottx I might tell about Talbot Hill, where Professor Marsh, of Yale college, and Professor Cope, of tbe academy of sciences, Philadelphia, have made tucli wonderful discoveries of the petrified bones of prehistoric monsters, which, the proressors insist, must have been fully 100 feet high when they walked on the arth. Why Americans should think it necessary to travel to Earoje when such an endless Tariety of sublime and beautiful scenery and such an array of natural wonders are within a day's courney of their homes, is, as Dunareary would say. "one of the things no fellah can find out." Hay-Making. The prospect for a large and valuable hay crop is promUing everywhere throughout the country, and, as the time is near at hand for mowing this important crop, a few words in regard to it will not be out of place. The 'Western Review" says there are some things that should be borne in mind that some of our farmer friends are liable to forget, or not to attach the importance to them that is required, and eometfturs, there fore, much of the valuable property of the hay is lost in not cutting and curing it at the proper time. The particular time to cut Taries with tbe season, and will occur this year somewhat earlier than usual in many parts of the country. A eood supply of hay on every farm, adfiuate to tbe wants of tne live stock which' the farmer intends to keep, Is indispensable, if it is expected that the stock is to prove profitable. There Is no doubt that many valuable animals are annually sacrificed to a false economy in feeding innutritious or poor hay or straw. A man who follows such a policy stands in his own light, abd if he does not change to a better course the sooner he sells his stock and quits tbe business the better it will be for himself and his animals. 21 win do well to reflect that tbe loss of a horse, or a good cow, or a few sheep, and tbe "ran down" condition of his entire etock,
more than counter balances any earing that can be effected by using inferior, badly cured, woody and musty bay. It is the poorest kind of economy; in fact, it can Dot be called by that . term. In converting the (grasses and forage plants into hay, or curing them, the object is, of course, to so treat them as to expel the water they contain (which amounts to nearly two-thirds of their weight), with the least loss of their nutritive properties. To secure this object tbe grass must be cut at that stage when the greatest weight of produce with the maximum of nutrition can be ob tiined; and then it is necessary to so conduct the drying process that nutritive juices snail not be lost by the washing of rains. While newly cut grass Is quite green a shower of rain may not materially Injure it, but repeated raios and turnings will destroy much of its value. When ready to cut, grass and clover contain sugar, gum, mucilage, albuminous and other valuable compounds, which are liable to be washed away by heavy rains. On this point Professor oelcker remarks that by repeated wettings and turnings the crop becomes more or less bruised, and not only are the sugar, and gum and other soluble matters liable to be washed out, but tbe bruised state of the planti permitting at least a portion of these various constituents to escape through the lascerated cell walls, induces fermentation, which, if not checked at once, causes further loss. During fermentation soluble albumen and sugar are destroyed two of the most valuable elements of neutrit'on hence in showry weather grass recently cut should not be turned over more than is absolutely necessary, and under all circumstances the corps should be handled as lightly as possible, so that it may not be injured by bruising and breaking tbe hay. Smart Sally Small. Nelson County (Ky.) Record. Quite a remarkable case is reported in Larue county, four miles from Buffalo, in tbe vicinity of Bush creek. An old-man named Henry Mattlson bad for fifteen years been successfully engaged in the manufacture of whisky, and in that time accumulated quite a sum of money, about $12,000. One day last week Mattlson died, and before death repented of his sins; then made np his mind to give tbe government the money, as be considered be had swindled it out of that amount All he had was money, except the patch of ground that he lived upon, about tnree acres. Tbe day after his death Sally Small, a young girl , who is said to be his illegitimate offspring, visited her dead father, and there succeeded in getting the money. While the friends of tbe old man were at the grave, Sally, who was' with her beau, a young man from Lexington, concluded it was the best time to "light out." and this they did. They took the Knoxville branch train at Getbsemane and went to Govesburg, where they took a train over tbe Sotuhern road for some point east They are, no doubt, married now. The girl sent $50 to an acquaintance to pay the bunal expenses.
Blindly 4J roping; Forforue medicinal alcoholic rcsuscltant of physical energy which should take the place of tbe heady and frequently adultered stimulants of commerce, the medical practitioners of a quarter of a century ago were electrified on first observing the reviving effects upon the system of a tonic then recently introduced, but which liss since become the mcst popular medicine told on this continent, viz : Hos tetter's Stomach Bitters. Their astonishment and admiration were increased when experience further disclosed that this botanic remedy effected results which the mineral drugs of the pharmacopoeia often utterly failed to produce among others, the permanent restoration of vigor, the removal of digestive, secretive and evacuative irregularities, and tie eradication and prevention of periodic fevers Speedy recoznition of ,tbe merits of the Bitters by unprejudiced and enlightened physicians naturally followed this revelation of medical facts, which have since received such frequent and positive confirmation.
