TITE TALE OF TI1E TERRIBLE FIRE. I will tell you the tale of the terrible Ore; It springs from the earth it 1m dreadful and dire. In tbe dark Wintry sky, See the spark Upward fly; See it icror In its frame See it glow Into flame! See it burning and blazing; See it spring into life With a vigor amazingHow It longs for the strife! Hear the noise and tbe rattle How it swells, how it grows. Like the crash of a battle, Like the clash of the foea! See It rushing and rising and roaring, See it trying to touch a tall star; It seems in the sky to be soaring Like a flag of tierce flame from afar. Se it turning and burning and braving See it streaming and gleaming and red! A h ! the smoke in the air now Is waving . Like a winding sheet of dull lead. Hear it laugh with wild glee at each futile endeavor To quench or to quell Its exuberant force; It is naming and free and fantastic forever; It delights and exults with no pang of remorse, With no pain, with but passion mad passion it quivers "With lis pennon of scarlet, the bloodiest hue, With its gleaming streams and its rearing rivers, It dares to do all things that flame dare s to do. How It darts, how it dances and dashes As though it had taken for aim To reduce all the world into ashes And to fling all the stars into flame! It is glittering and glowing and glaring And raging it rings its own knell; It is showing its wonderful daring It is turning the sky Into hell! How It lazily lingers With its swell and its fall; With its flerv Angers Weirdly waving a pall; With its horrible hisses. Like the wind in a storm; With its blistering kisses. On face and on form ! Of its flashes IJereft, Only ah lies Are left; Till its ci ies Tell its doom And it dies In the gloom. I have ti yon the tale of the terrible fire; It has sung its last song to its luminous lyre It has sung its last song, It has breathed its last breath. It bus lived without life, it ban died without death. Appleton's Journal. INDIANA INTELLIGENCE.
Seven bouses per night is the average for Evaosville burglars. Tbe twilight flicker is alluded to by an Evansville cotemporary. Tbe Warsaw your-p- men and ex-soldiers have organized the Warsaw rifles. . Judge W. E. Niblack is at home swapping jokes with the toys and spending the holidays. The ladies of fort Wayne have raised $1,500 for the benefit of the masonic temple and opera bouse. Intelligence from local exchanges is to the effect that democratic dubs are being organ ized in every county. So far three reapers have been entirely ruined. This diabolical work is being done in different part of tbe state. The scoundrels should be sbot whenever caught in the act. Tbe entirely new and elegant cantata of " Joseph's Bondage" will be given by the teachers and pupils of Mr. II. S. Kin?, will be given in oriental costume, witu luil dramatization, and will be of especial intern t to all. Terre Haute Express: Captain Dreusicke, of tbe light artillery, went to Indianapolis yesterday after a gun, which he baa bor-. rowed from the German veteran corns of that C-ty for usa on tbe 4ib. Captain Dreuaicite has prosecuted the organization of bis battery with great energy. He is now able to give assurance that the 4th will be opened with an artillery salute. Garber, of the Madison Courier, has a field glat, and though his fine feelings have evidently been lacerated, it has never occurred to him lo lcok tbe other way. He says: "The young men who go swimming on the opposite side oC the river in daylight on Sundays, should remember that by the aid of powerful fieid-glaste Krsons could tee fliem pla-nly, and thereby come grossly insulted." Lafayette Journal: Tbe anti-blue ribbon itea in Fowler feel joyous over the release of Stephen Barnes, a retailer of that which intoxicates. Several wetks since Barnes was charged with violating a town ordinance by selling without a license. He was fined, but the marshal could not lay bands upon him ontil last week, when he was found, arrested and placed in jail. An application for a writ of habeas corpus was granted and be was released. Martinsville Gazette: It is currently rumored in political circles that Colonel Jordan and John Comer are to be eliminated from tbe republican ticket of this county. There seems to be a '"wow and awumpus" in the radical camp that can not be quieted. Peru ps tbe transfe.r of that $300, on the nigbt previous to the holding of the republican convention, baa something to do in a.i fating tbe political waters. That rua'ter has never yet been explained to the satitf act-on of certain republicans. It skeins that "ring' rule is a yoke that is not ea-y and a burden that is not light, 'T was ever thus. Col ambus Republican: A little scene of a communistic nature occurred at Milford, Decatur county, last week. A man by the name of Smith, the leader of a squad of rioters, while drunk, entered the clothing house of Messrs. Rothchilds Bros., and with rocks in hand ordered the store closed. Thia was done, and after the aquad departed from the building .it was opened. The mob returned and again closed the store. And a third time did they close the house, and then broke in the windows with stones and brickbats. Smith declared ttftt he was a
Communist and tbat he did this in the name of communism. Smith was once an offender
of tbe law in this county, and may b re membered by many of the citizens here. Fort Wayne Sentinel: A man is tramping through the state getting rid of counterfeit $10 bills on the Muncie national bank. The bill is a fair looking one, and will deceive the most careful. Cambridge City Tribune: Some of our young men do not know what to do. They wanted work all the year and did not find it. Now that harvest hands are in demand, they are trying to think of some other kind of work they would rather do. Hoosier State : The editor of the Indianian would never have 'gotten his tail over tbe political dash-board and flopped oyer to the nationals if his superior qualifications for office bad been recognized by the republican party. But then you know, that .'it" is the reason why the dog didn't catch the rabbit. Richmond Independent: Dr. N. A. Munnall, of Indianapolis, the Y. M. C. A. worker, arrived in the city last evening at 8 o'clock p. ru. He held a large street meeting at the corner of Fifth and Mam streets. His audience almost blockaded tbe street. After this a meeting was held in the Y. M. C. A. room. Logansport Tharos: E. W. Halford, formerly editor of the Indianapolis Journal, came np from Lafayette last week, and spent a short season in our city. It is whispered tbat the candidate for attorney general on the republican ticket has been making over tares to Mr. Halford to take charge of the Journal. Goshen Democrat: Mrs. Emma Molloy and Major Welch are working np a temperance revival again in the benighted region of South Bend, Niles, and adjacent towns. We wish they would come np this way and "reconstruct" some of the brethren who are getting a little lukewarm in the cause. Professor Gardner left before finishing the good work. At a meeting of the board of directors of tbe Masonic Mutual aid association, of New Albany, held Tuesday nigbt, the following officers were elected for the ensuing term: F. S. Tuley, attorney ; Jont Peters, general agent Franklin Jeffersonian : Tbe cutting of the wheat crop is about all if not altogether, completed, and we think we can safely sy that never before was there such a wheat crop raised in Johnson county. The acreage was not only vast, but the yield and quality of the grain will be grand, and is likely to turn out from fifteen to thirty-five bushels to the acre. We may now look for cheap Hoar and tbat that is good. New Albany correspondence Louisville Commercial: Joseph Eckard, the crooked distiller of Harrison county, failed to appear in tbe United States court on Monday, and his bond of $1,000 was forfeited. About 1 o'clock yesterday morning he came to town and gave himself up to Deputy Marshal Payton. He stated that sickness in bis family prevented his responding. He was committed to jail yesterday in default or a new bond. Columbus Democrat: Bartholomew county has nine temperance societies more than any other county in the state, and yet the very place there ought to be one, in fact tbe only place worthy of note in the county, has J 1 A a B none, lis omcers nau to iooi me expenses of the ball, add tbe organization went down. Speakers from a distance had to be paid. It tikes money to run a temperance society, and it must be forthcoming. The Fort Wayne Sentinel thus refers to one of the leadicg institutions of the city: Never was the filthy old calaboose a greater nuisance than at present. The stench emanating therefrom has been stong for years; now it is unbearable. The old shell is reeking with filth and swarming wit vermin. Tbe air is close and polluted, and a healthy man rinds it difficult to inhale it more than a few moments. Through the imbecility, or worse, of the council, the old plague spot bus disgraced and insulted the community for many years; and now de cency and common humanity demand thai some change be made. Will the council take some action? Madibon Star: We have conversed with several farmers of our county this morningnotably aruorg whom were Dr. David L. McClure, of Lancaster township, and Mr. James BixUr, of Monroe, and they tell of an insec in tbe oats which is likely to ruin the crcp It is a little green louse, about half the size of a houje tiy, and it is very destructive, eating tbe head ofT of tbe grain. Some of the farmers were very mnch alarmed, thinking the insects were young grasshoppers, and gave tbe corn crop up for gone. Mr. Baxter says tbat about sixteen years ago the same insect made its appearance and did much damage. Tbe oat crop in this vicinity may be given up for gone Lafayette Courier: George Dixon, who was arrested yesterday for assaulting James Burns, was bound over by Mayor Kimmel in the sum of $1,000 to a wait the action of tbe grand jury. When Burns came out Dixon struck him on the back of tbe head with a stone, knocking him down, and then kicking him brutally in the face and head Dixon, ft will be remembered, was arrested about a year ago for f-tealing a coat from a man on Oakland Hill, but was afterwards released, as the party did not desire to prosecute him. stands Alone. ITCHING PILES This distressing complaint Is generally preceded by a moisture, lite perspiration; distressing itching, as though pin worms were crawling in and about the rectum, particularly at night, when undressing, or in bed after getting warm. It appears in summer as well as in winter; oftentimes shows Itself around the private parts, and is not confined to males only, but it is quite as frequent that females are sorely afflicted, particularly in times ol pregnancy, extending into the vagina, proving very distressing, and almost beyond the powers of endurance. Cases of long standing, pronounced Incurable, have been permanently cured by sins ply applying HOME TESTIMOY. I was aorely n JTTlcted with one of tbe most distressing of all diseases. Pruritus or Prurigo, or more commonly known as Itching Piles.'' The itching at t.meswas almost intolerable, Increased by scretching, rnd not unfreqnently became quite sore. I bought a uox of "Swayne's ointnent:" its use gave quick relief, and In a sliot time made a perfect cure. I can now sleep undisturbed, and I would advise all who are suffering with this distressing complaint to procure "Swayne's Ointment" at once. 1 have triad prescriptions almost innumerable, without finding any permanent relief.
