THE INDIANA STATE SENTINEL, WEDNESDAY MORNING, MAT 29, 1878.
UOBE II CRT.
If I had known In the morning How wearily all the day The word unkind "Would trouble my mind, I said when I went away, I had been more are fill, carllng. Nor given you heedless paid ; But we vex "our own"' With look and tone We may never take back again. Fr though In the quiet evening I may give you the kls of peace, Yet li mlKbt be . That never for me The pain at the heart'shonld cease. How many go forth In the morning That never come home at night ! Ami heart have been broken By harsh words spoken That sorrow can ne'er set right. "We have careful thought for the stranger, And smiles for the sometime guest. But oft Tor "oar own" The bitter toue, Though we love "our own" the best. Ah! lips with curse lmpu'ient! Ah! brow with that look of scorn! 'Twere a cruel fate Were the nlht too late . To undo the work of the morn. Boston Pilot. DEMOCRATIC DOCTRINE. The Platform of the Party Adoptel.jit the Ntate Convention A Clear and Unequivocal Ennnclation or Principles Sentiments "Which the Mnei Will Indorse. The democracy of the state of Indiana assembled in delegate convention declare: That national bank notes shall be retired, and In lieu thereot there shaL! be Issued by the governmeut an equal amount of treasury note with full legal tender quality. That we are in lavor of making the United States notes, commonly called greenbacks, a full legal tender in payment of all debts, public and private, except hoc!i obligations only as are by the terms of the original contracts under which they were issued, expressly payable i,n coin. Thai the right to issue paper money as well as coin is the exclusive prerogative of the govern raent, and such money should be issued in such amounts at) the sound business interests of the country may from time to time require. We are in favor of such legislation by congress as will Authorize the taxation by the states of the United States notes in common with all other money. That we deem it unwise and inexpedient to enact any further legislation for the funding of the national debt abroad, through the means of home syndicates or other methods; and we believe the true policy of the government and the best interests of the people would be subserved by legislating so . as to distribute said debt among our people at home affording them the most favorable and practical opportunities for the investment ot their savings in the funded debt ot the United states. That we are in favor of such legislation which shall ftx the legal rate of interest at not exceeding six per centum per annum. We demand the rtstoratiou of the silver dollar of m grains to the coin or the country, and with full legal tender quality in the payment of all debts, both public' and private; and that ttie coinage thereof shall 1x3 unlimited, and upon the same terms and conditions as may be provided lor the coinage of gold. - That we are in favor of the immediate and unconditional repeal of the resumption act. We are la favor of the most rigid economy In public expenditures, and we declare that the fees and salaries of ail public officers st ould be reduced. That we are In favor of the repeal of the bankruDt act. In at we sincerely deplore the recent violent collision !etweeit labor and capital, and to prevent the recurrence thereof aud to protect the future public order and security lell've that the wajsi of corporations engiiged iu the business of lulmn, manufacturing and transportation snould be a hrst lieu upon the property, receipts aud earnings of said corjor--ttons, Aud that such lien should be declared, denned and enforced by appropriate legislation. Tiiat we favor the passage of a law for the ventilation of coal mines one that would be Just to the miner and owner. The democratic party Is the friend of the common rchool system, and will In every legitimate way labor Tor its success, and will oppose any attempt to divert any portion of the common echool fund to any sectarian purpose. That the last apportionment of the state lor legislative puroes was grossly unjust and dishonorable, aud we demand that the next legislature, In apportioning the state for legislative purposes, as will be their Imperative duty, shall have regard alone to population ana contiguity of territory. That the Jurisdiction claimed and exercised , by the circuit court of the United .States over questions of corporate and individual rights arising nnderthe laws of the states, tends to oppress and burden litigants to such an extent as to amount to a practical denial of Justice In many cases; and we consider the legislation which has conferred such Jurisdiction as unwise aud hurtful to the true interest-o people. And we demand such legislation as will restrict and limit the Jurisdiction of such courts to such matters as are clearly contemplated by the constitution and expressed In the judiciary net of 17W. We are opposed to class legislation, and protest against the grant of subsidies by the federal government, either in lands, bonds, money or by the pledge of the public credit. That we abhor and hold up to public detestation the leaders in the republican party who secretly connived, and with barefaced effrontery carried out. the scheme, by and through ve-jal returning board, whereby Samuel J. Tilden and Thomas A. Hendricks, the people's choice for president ani vice president, were wrongfully kept out of the positions to which a tree people bad called them. We noid it up the monster crime of the age, a crime against free government, a crime against the elective franchise. and a crime that can only be condoned when the malefactors who seated a fraud In the presidential chair are driven from power ana consigned to everlasting infamy by the people whom they have outraged. And we denounce the act of the president of the United States In appointing to high and lucrative positions the corrupt members of the returning boards, and condema the acts of federal officers in attempting to Interfere with the rights and iowers of the state courts In the prosecution of these criminals. That our senators and representatives in congress be and are hereby requested to secure passage of a law giving to the soldiers of the Mexican war a pension similar to that now given to the soldiers of the war of 1312. The Plan. Morgan County Gazette. The editors of the Indianapolis Son arc extremely virtuous (?) as to the question of a coalition between the national and democratic parties.- In this respect they are political saints (?) of Bootless purity. How long ago i3 it since Jim Buchanan was willing to form an alliance with th democrats in order to secure a legislative appointment for his brataer Tom? WJiatkindof an'ass" wasparading around in a"iion skin" about that time? How long is it tincc this same Jim Buchanan was an independent candidate for congress in the interest of John llanni. a republican nominee? Did Jim appearin his"true garb" sn "ass" ia a "lion's .ltin" while carrying on' that cojlition? In short, what suare had the Buchanans in the Wolcott eell out? Did tb?y participate in the epxils of that coup d'etat? Was that affiliation effected for 'clf protect'on and private interest," or was it a matter of pure principle? In what way did it "aid" the independent "cause" and "strengthen the party?" Don't show your cars. A Frisky Kcnlnrhlsa, Hah! San Francisco Chronicle.! Hie prosecuting attorney appeared to toss op the names of the wives to far known in a mental hat, and called Mrs. Sunn W. Kicks, nee Pepper. The maiden name of tae lady was known to he not a misnomer when a vry slim, very prim and very straight lady, with hair verging closely on what used to be rudjly called red, took t be stand. Susmdid not know what her number would be in n corrected list of the Kicks helpmates. She uld swear positively to only one who stood ahead of her in the class jouisu M. Kicks, tie Kicb, of Louisville, Kentucky. Susie had enlisted in the ranks at no less sabred a place than Angel's Camp, Calaveras county, in February, 1S57, but quit the service fu Jane, lao). In Februtry, 1801, she resumed allegiance, but soon thereafter left him forever, never again eeein? him except during half an hour's interview at the Lick house in 1JSGG. whoa he reported progress by announcing that the name of the then current wife, with whom he was living in peace and blessedness at Sacramento, was llortense
Ricks, nee Deerrnao. She bad preferred being known by the pungent patronymic of Pepper than keepit ; a corner in the cognomen of Kicks, in which so tnanv oilier women
claimed an undivided interest. The next name drawn was that of the Rev. Conrad Trevier, who testified to having married Kicks to Tolly Pcckharu, cf this city, on the I Oth day of October last. Ricks hiin-tlf next J took the stand. In 1SG1 he was canvassing j for a house In Sacramento. In 1802 he 8 arted for his old Kentucky home, and actually reached there without having been married more than once on the route, and that not until he had reached Cincinnati, where he espoused Uortense Deerrnan. About this time, hi heart being aflame with love of his country as well as of his countrywomen, he entered the service us a chapiain and wrestled mightily with the devil and Jeff Davis and the southern confederacy for the salvation of northern sou? until 1, when even evangelical ztnl tired in a service which admitted of such a minimum of marrying and giving in marrisge. so he mustered himself out of the service, gathered up bis prayer-books and Uortense and things, and returned to CaJiforni i and its wonderful climat. At the time of the interview with Susie Pepper in 1Sj6, he had been drunk for just three ynrs, seven months and fifteen day?. S3 that when Susie , peppered him into a half hour's compulsory sobriety he realized the feelings of Kip Van Winkle when it dawned upon the mind of that phlegmatic citizen that he had overslept himself. He was a teacher in the Louisville college, Kentucky, in 1349, when he married Louisa Rich; but if he was not mistaken as to the particular wife. she had got a divorce from him alocg in lSo3, there or thereabouts. He had heard that the wife designated as the Pepper wife had died and been divorced and had got married again. Anyhow. Susan being one of the earlier levies, he actually would not have known her if he had met h r on the street the day preceding. He bad two children by Louisa Rich Ricks, two clndrenby Susan Pepper Ricks, two children by Hortense Deerrnan Ricks, twochildren by but even Ricks can't forecast the future of Polly Peckham Ricks or other possible duets. Counsel for Mr. Ricks made a very touching appeal for bU discharge. Susan Pepper had cast him off, thereby becoming a Peppercaster, as it were Polly Peckham needed him. Her condition would be worse than early widowhood if the reverend repeater was'taken away from her and set t j making bricks Instead of brides. He . was. nevertheless, held to answer in default of $2,000 bail. "What are farmers to do to rid themselves of those fellows prowling about the country? One day it is a tin peddler, next some patent right vender, and by the time you get rid of him comes some other peddler or an Insurance agent. And yet so many farmers will, in spite of all warning through our agricultural press, deal with absolute Mr-angers. As to insurance a man must be a little less than a born stupid to do business with an absolute strangercoming to his place in this way. In the firit placa it has been pretty well settled that a goodly number (to be as mild as possiMe) of our old line insurance companies are little better thsn frauds. Secondly, if we must deal with them there are men in the business who live . among us, and who have character aud standing in the community. A CONTRIBUTION TO "NATIONAL" SONG BOOS. NO. I. The state house commissioners organized a year ago to-day, eo that with yesterday closed the first ytar of its operations. In that time the board has examined and rejected the plans bequeathed to it by the legislature, visited and inspected many of the public buildings in various parts of the county. The new plans, twenty-four in number, have been examined and one selected, ami the board now announces itself as ready to receive bids for making the excavation for the state house. An itemized statement shows the expenses of the board on all accounts up to May t amounted to $',215, and up to this date, a full year, the total can hardly reach $10,000. This will include expenses on accouut of the visits recently made to the old stone quarries of the state. The excavation to be made now will hardly co&t over $.'5,000, so that thus far the figures have been kept remarkably small. Out of Tone. When the tones of a musical instrument become harsh and discordant, we say it is "out of tune." The same may be said of that far more wonderful ana complicated piece of mechanism, the human structure, when it becomes dirdered. SAGE'S Cares "Cold In Headland C'atarrhr or Ozeena. AN OPEN LETTER. II Speaks for Itself. Rockpout, Mass., April 2, 1877. Mr. Editor Having read in your paper reports of the remarkable cures of catarrh, I am induced to tell "what I know about catarrh," and I fancy the "snuC and "innaling tube" makers (mere dollar grubbers) would be glad If they could emblazon a similar cure in the papers. For 2tt years I suffered with catarrh. The naal passages became completely closed. "Snuff," "dusV "ashe.,""lnhaling tubes" and 'sticks" wouldn't wori, though at intervals I would sniff upthe so-called catarrh snuff until I became a valuable tester for such medicines. I gradually grew worse, and no one can know how much I suffered or what a miserable being I was. My head ached over my eyes so that I was confined to my bed for many successive days, sutlering the most Intense pain, which at one time lasted continuously for 168 hours. All sense of smell and taste gone, sight and hearing impaired, body shrunken and weakeued, nervous system shattered, and constitution broken, and I was hawking and spitting seveneighths of the time. I prayed for death to relieve me of my sutlering. A favorable notice In your paper of Dr. Sage's Catarrh Remedy induced me to purchase a package and use it with Dr. Pierce's Nasal Douche, which applies the remedy by hydrostatic pressure, the only way compatible with common sense. Well, Mr. Editor, it did not cure me in three-fourths of a second, nor in ono hour or month, but in less than eight minutes I was relieved, and in ' three months I was entirely cured, and have remained so for over sixteen months. While using the Catarrh Remedy, I used Dr. Pierce's Uclden Medical Discovery to purify my blood and strengthen my ttomach. I also kept my liver ctlve and bowels regular by the use of his Pleasant Purgative Pellets. If my experience will Induce otber sufferers to seek the same means of relief, this letter will have answered Its purpose. Yours trnlv, 8. D. REMICK. A CLOUD OF WITNESSES.
