A buyerof hay writes to tie Country Gentleman a request that farmers c ut their hay earlier. He would be williDg to pay tbree or four dollars a ton extra for good, bright, preserved gra8, (which properly cared hay really is) than for the brittle, stalky sttilf whuh too often fills the market. He sajs: "It is a common belief among farmers that grass cut when nearly ripe,, gives more weight pr acre. It may not be true, but if thev think so. they will be pretty sure to let it stand to the last minute unless the argument of self-interest in the other direction' gets them out-of the miserable habit. In general, the idea prevails that a few days' delay as to haymaking is not at all important, and so when grain is ripening about the same time, that gets tb preference as to timely care. Farmers should be taught those who eeek to sell hay at least that every crop should be gathered nt just the right time, and that a failure to do so will bring a financial jcnalty. Late cut and over ripe hay is little better than straw, and observing purchasers knor it. Millions of dollars are every year lot to the country from this one cause because, in general, farmers art, slow in adopting this rtfonn.
Our modern improve J machinery for rapidly making hay favors tie reform but s yet it does not seem to have been very effective." An Aetor Hakes a "Jlssh." East Saginaw (Mich.) Special to the InterOseau. On Thursday, May 9, Anna, daughter of Edward Starkweather, a very respectable citizen, disapieartd mysteriously, and the fact, in connection with subsequent developr.enta, caused no little interest The facts briefly are that last summer the Henrietta Cbsnfrau company visited this city, and Frank Mordaunt, the actor, male tie acquaintance of Miss Starkweather, che visited Bay City, Flint, and Lansing wnh him, but the ladies of the Chanfrau company objected, and the girl was tent home, but it has been ascertained that a correspondence was kept up through a third party in this city. The first week of this month came Kite Claxton. and with the company was Mordaunt, who was seen in company with Mijs Starkweather several times while here, ard on Thutsday, after the departure of the company. Miss Starkweather, in the absence of her mother, skipped out. It has since been learned that she went to Lansing, thence to Port Huron, where she joined Mordaunt. A gentleman of this city saw them in Cincinnati the following week. Mordaunt is forty years old, and hs a wife and family. The action of the young lady tbns coixed awav has caused the lamily and friends here "great distress. A Missouri writer says: "If a boy 10 years of ape starts on the western prairie with 10 sheep, and permits them to multiply until he is 21 years of ihm, he will then be a rich man. When the boy is 13 years of a?e he may receive a collegiate education from theproceeds of the sale of his wool, and also employ a boy shepherd to take care of bis sheep. Ten sheep in Missouri cost $25, the fall of the year bring the b?st time to buy them. Ten ewes and one ram will produce 10 lambs In the sprirg, and in June from $15 to $20 worth of wool. The mechanic exChanges his labor for money, the farmer his produce. When a farmer sleeps his stock and farm crops are growing; but just as soon as a mechanic lays down bis tools he is runnirjg behind fcr rent, clothing and fuel." Girls, as well as boys, should haue their outdoor pleasures. It is to be expected that girls will be less rough in their plav, but they will obey the instincts of their different nature and breathe the same air as their less gentle brothers. I don't care how often your daughters may be called hoydenisb, or how often she may deserve the appellation of "rom-boy," she is developing health and strength and a general fitness for the duties of mature life. If a few idiots, who either can not understand the needs of childhood or are envious of young blood, choose to call names they will not make her any less a lady. The day when a skeleton with a pallid cheek and feeble step was considered genteel is past. There aare too many young graves filled by that juggernaut of fashion to make the style permanent. Some homes are full of love and sunshine for .strangers, and all ugliness and gloom for the oni-s for whom they live. To constitute a truly happy home, there should be pretty little personal adornments on ibe part of the wife, who thereby shows a desire to plesss her husband, and foetid to the genial at
tractions ot her home. A pleasant Word on her part, when the overworked man comes home, olten eats away the raw edge of some trouble on bis mind, and brings out a corresponding desire to be both agreeable and respectful, which characteristics are always accompanied by afiection. What is true of manners is true of drets also. Rudeness, roughness and impatience are soon followed by insolence, and when sweet temper gives way to anger and discord the home circle is no longer attractive. Be kind to the book agent. He has a father, perhaps, and a mother, who knew him in his innocent youth. Perhaps even now in some peaceful New England village fond hearts are beating for him and sweet lips breathe love's dearest prayers for his welfare. Therefore lay him down tenderly, fold his hands peacefully on his breast and close bis eyes -gently as you put him to rest under the branches of the weeping willow, where'the birds carol all through the summer days their softest songs. But plant him deep plant him deep! Puck. A lady was walking quit-tly alon a city s'ret, not long no. when the door of a house ftVw oen. and a boy shot out with a whoop likeawiid Ind'an. Once on the pavement he danced a sort of double shuffle all around the curbstone, and then raced down the sticet in great haste, for It was evident by the hooks under his arm he was goins to school. ' Mark Twais told a newspaper reporter that he was going abroad in order to find a quiet place to write, where he would not be disturbed once a day. It is singular that it never occurred to him to remain at home and secure a desk in a store that don't advertise. Norri ito wn Herald. Beal A Flokea, Attorneys.
