There has been a fair amount of business transacted, in the leading branches of trade during the week closing with to-day, and prices as a gene-al rule have been quite well maintained. The grocery market ha been very active, and prices rule steady, with the exception of sugar and coffee, which rule active and firm, with an upward tendency. The New York Bulletin of Monday Mya: Coffee. The market for the stock of Hrazils ottering remains quite firm, aud full former rate are generally inslstea upon, with the desirable supply now available small. The Ktejimes' cargo has b en pretty well worked do wd, and tite balance of the accumulation shows nothing very attractive. Sales of xou bag per Memuon. Jobbing operations for the day have been moderate, and confined In the main to ordinary mail orders. Holders of the leading and more attractive style of West India stock are pretty steady in their views, and offer wih moderation, as the supply tends to run behind somewhat, and promises on distributive demancis nro fair. Some of the best parcels are held at an advance, ami former rates in all cases are obtained. We hear of only a moderate demand to-day, with gales of WO bags mnracaibo from first hands. fcuc.irs. Raws have found some buyers todav, and trade was on the whole in fa.r shape, but trie demand not particularly sharp or Rencm!, and selections were made close to positive wants. Runner are not overstocked, but tbe lUHj .rlty hink tLey have enough for immedia.e use, and are disposed to lioid o3" a little in on-ienienee. Onpriceathe tone remaius strong, wltli fair renuing evidently wortU fully but good refining still falls to give evidence of being quolab e above 7 7-lSc per lb. The reported transactions embrace (part last eveaiiijg) oOO hhds molasses siiKrs at 7c; 200 l.luls muscovado at 73V.ic. 1,200 hhds d- al 7 1-1!7'4-, aud 1-k) hli j Porto Itloo at Kt-nned have again sold closely up to the amount on the market, and pretty iimcu all the retinrM have their stocks cleaned up. Full lormer rates were obtained, and the tone was steady, but without indications of further buoyancy. KcceipM of country produce are lilyndand the market moderately active. Egs rule steady and firm. The market is overstocked ith butter, Uk demand light and prices nominal. Toultry is fairly active. Green vegetables are arriving in large quantities and the market Is fairly active. IValers m dry goods report a fair amount of trade, and prices, with a few exceptions, have undergone no changes since our hut weekly revit.-w. We clip the following from the New York Bulletin of Monday: Business has b?en light with the package houses in all departments, and the Jobbing trade was generally quiet, though some talr sales of prints, cotton goods, dress goods, etc., wore stimulated by very low prices. Califor nia jobbers are still buying fair quantities of low priced goods for shipment by sailizig vessel, but operations on t lie p:r ol jobbers from otiier sections of the country are mostly of a haud-to-raouth character, and there isaii evident ii. disposition on the part of buyers generally to anticipate fu ure'wants to any material extent, despite tne unusual inducements offered by agents oa some descriptions of goo:s. Woolen floods. There has been an irregular demand for heavy woolen gouai for men's we-ir at first hands, and, while some additional order were placed for worsted coaling and speeial styles of laacy casslmeres by the clothing trade, selections were mostly lestricted ta comparatively stiall lots. Heavy cotton warp worsteds are moving s'owiy, and there is very little spirit, in the demand for overcoat inns. Ooi ton Goods There has been a continued light movement in nearly all descriptions of cotton goods from first hands, and tne jobbing trade was only moderate. Brown and bleached couutis remain unsettled, and various makes of each are Ik-Idk ottered at "cuttlna " price bv everalof the leading Jobbers. Dyed ducks continue in go d demand, and deulms, tickings and cornet jeans are in lair request for moderate selections. Corded piques are meeting wild fair sales, and the supply Is now in comparatively good shape. Prints have been quiet in agents' hands, but the jobbing distribution has been fairly Ml lafactory, and large sales of both fancy and shirting prints were made in package and broken lots by the leading print house during the week just closed. Low priced shirtings continue in good demand and light supply, and 'Turkey red prints are In steady request for moderate selection. Gingham. There has been only a moderate movement in dress styles, and buyers are, as a rule, operation more cautiously in these fabrics, but staple checks have been in steady request, aud leading makes are still sold to arrive by several agents. Dress Uoos. Staple and faney worsted fabrics were placed in small lots with jobbers, whose stocks bave become d.KiwsortJ-d, but cotton dress goods ruled quiet, and prices are In many cases low and irregular. There was so trie Improvement In the provision market to-day, and prices were a shade firmer. Flour is in fair demand nt our figures. The wheat market rules firm and active. The demand for corn is fairly active at unchanged prices. SALES REPORTED. Corn 3 cars rejected o. t. 3?c ; 2 cars rejected elevator c. ORAIX in STORK.

A Boston Reporter In Chicago. A reporter who left Boston and went west recently applied to the managing editor of a Chicago paper for employment "What are your quali ficationsr ' asked the M. E. "I have had eleven years' experience on the papers of the eastern cities, have passed through Harvard, can speak and write all the modern languages." "D you know anything about base ball?" "No, sir; I do not." "Can yon spell Christ with a small 'c'T" "No, sir." "Do you use water with tout whisky, sir? ' "I never drink, sir." "Do you wear a clean shirt as a regular thing?" "Certainly I do, sir." "Have you a chew of toL ;co about you?" "I never use tobacco, sir." Great heavens! young man, what do yon take this country for? Do you expect because you have spent 11 years dwarfing your intellect by service on eastern newspapers, and because you can chew hash in' the maccaroni and seven other tongues, that you can obtain work here? Been through Harvard, eh? What of that? What we want is a man who has waded through Hades waist high, who smokes, chews, drinks Kentucky whisky, who can report a base ball match, dog fight or prize fight, and we don't care a cuss generally whether school keeps or not I'm afraid you won't suit. Good day." Exit Boston reporter. Wanted a Man to "Sit Witn Sal. Virginia City (Nev.) Clironicle.J Yesterday afternoon a gfeen looking couple, evidently newly married, called at the photograph gallery of Beals it Waterhouse, and he wanted their pictures taken. Just as Mr. Beals had got his plate ready the man called him aside and said he wanted to ask a favor. "I was told in Carson you took the best pictures in the state. Now, yon see, Sal and I got hitched down thtre last Monday; now, her folks go a good deal on style, and they live in the states. They never saw me, and if I send my mug back east they'll be dead agin me, sure. I'm a darned sight better than I look, and when people come to know me they vote me a brick. Now, what I want is to get some good lookin' man to sit with Sal for a picture. Will you stand in? She's willin . Them bi whiskers of yours'll catch 'em, sure, and create harmony. You look like a solid capitalist, and they take me for a petit larceny thief." Mr. Beals enjoyed the idea immensely, and sat with "Sal" for the picture, which will doubtless carry joy into the household of the eastern relatives in a week or so. - New and Trne. It is indeed a fact worthy of remark, and one that seems never to have been noticed, that throughout the whole animal creation, in every country and clime of the earth, the most useful animals that eat vegetable food work. The all-powerful elephant, and the patient, untiring camel in tbe torrid zone; the horse, the ox and the donkey In the temperate; and the reindeer in the frigid zone, obtain all their muscular power from nature's simplest productions tbe vegetable kingdom, liut all the flesh eating animals keep the rest of the animated creation in constant dread of them. They seldom eat vegetable food until some other animal has eaten it first and made it into flesh. Their own fieh is unfit for other animals to eat, having been ittelf made out of Ceh, and is most foul and offensive. Great strength, neetness of foot, usefulness, cleanliness and docility are, then, always characteristic of vegetable ftesh eaters. The Medicine of Sunshine. Tbe world wants more sunshine in its disposition, in its business, in its charities, in its theology. For ten thousands of tbe aches and pains and irritations of men and women we commend sunshine. It soothes better than morphine; it stimulates better than champagne; it is the best plaster for a wound. The Gcod Samaritan poured out into the fallen traveler's gash more of this than of wine and oil. Florence Nightingale used it on Crimean battle fields. Take it into all the alleys, on board all the ships, by all the sick beds: not a phial full, not a cup- I . its TA ' tui, not a decanter inu, out a soui iuii. it is good for spleen, for liver complaint, for neuralgia, for rheumatism, for failing fortunes, for melancholy. We suspect that heaven itself is only more sunshine. An Onto Idea. Cincinnati Enquirer, 10th. There is no more necessity for a greenback or national party in Indiana, separate from the denaocratic party, than there is for a hoopskirt on a Hottentot. The democratic party is a greenback party, its platform is greenback. Its aims and objects are almost identical with taose of the national party. It is endeavoring to reach the fame end. To the average mind it seems as if those who are engineering the national movement are sacrificing the substance to secure the shadow. The Correct Idea. fCrawfbrdsville Review.. The elections last Tuesday in the different cities- throughout the state generally resulted favorably for the democracy. The large republican majority in Indianapolis was cut down to almost nothing, the democrats electing 12 and the republicans IS members of the city council. The board of aldermen stands 6 republicans and 4 democrat With this showing the democrats stand a good chance to cany Marion county in October. Gall, Also. Chicago Times. Wormwood is to be mixed with Prodigal Key's dinner cf veal cutlets. The congressional republican campaign committee propose to invite the prodigal, still supposed to be a democrat, to contribute to the campaign fund. Mr. Hayes will have to be called upon to make hia donation large enough for two. II U Way of Life la Fallen. rcaicago Times.l The president's way of life is fallen into the enne, tho yellow leaf; and that which should accompany old age, as honor, love, obedience, troops of friends, other than office holders, he must not look to have; but in their stead, curses loud and deep, mouth honor, breath which the poor heart would fain deny and dare not. It is related of a down east minister, who was once invited to participate in the independence day exercises at Boston, that, not being lnfomed as to what particular place be was to f Jl in the programme, he supposed he wis to deliver the oration, and prepared himself accordingly. On arrival he found that he was to make the opening prayer. Not willing to lose the benefit of his preparation he stood before tbe crowd of patriotic celebrators for over an hour,' putting his oration in the form of an address to the Deity instead of to the people, beginning thus: "Incomprehensible as it may appear unto thee, O Lord! only two hundred and se renty-foar years a0. etc" It is said that this was tbe invocation of which Oliver Wendell Holmes said it "waa the best prayer ever offered to ft Boston, tudience"!
