FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL
MOXET AND THE MARKETS. OmCKOr TU1C IWDIAWAPOUS HMTr5lL,l Tuhsdat EvKXiso, Apnl 30, IMS. I Local financial affairs have ruled exceedlngly riuiet during the -week closing to-day. The business transacted by banks and banking houses is only fair. There 1 but little paper being negotiated, and that In all Instances has to be strictly gilt ed?e. Rates of interest rule steady at 810 per cent. Kastern exchange Is in fair request, the rates being par buying, and MCQ'i selling. Commercial. The amount of business transacted in the general markets dnring the past week has been quite fair, and quotations bare, as a general rule, underwent bnt few changes. The inclement weather of the past few days has caused quite a uumljcr of buyers residing near the city from com In; In and purchasing their goods.; There ha been considerable activity In breadstuff's daring tha las ferr days. The demand for wheat Is Rood, offerings are Jght and prices role firm. There is a good trade doing in corn; offerings are only fair, and prices firm with an udward tendency. The provision market has been very dull during the entire week. There are but small offerings, and the demand Is light. There is a fair business doing in groceries. Both coffee and sugars are steady. The New Tork Bulletin of Monday, In reviewing that market, says: Coffee. The demand for Brazil grades has 1een moderate during the greater portion of the day, the buyers being unwilling to negotiate until this uteamer's samples could be examined, and thee were late in coming out. The new Rio Janeiro steamer was also on exhibition, and this no doubt attracted the attention of the trade, though not to an extent sufficient to influence business bad there been desiraole stock offering. Tha tone, however, was pretty firm, and, while no sales were reported up to the close, full former rates were asked. The second delayed IUo telegram is at hand, with dates to the 21th Instant, and reports: Sales to United States, 4.000 bas; shipments to Atlantic por's, 1,400 bags ; stock, 1 10,000 bas ; price, M-.IU0 ; dally receipts, 3,200 bags; exchange, 23d; steamer Cilenlogan, 13.0.0 bags. The only transaction we hear of is 2.0C0 bags at Baltimore per Urey Eagle. Jn the general run of mild grades there is not much of positive interest for the day. Attractive samples come under fair negotiation, and on a basis of lull rates, but buyers are not over anxious to handle anything at nil off in quality. We are again without reported sales worthy of record, aud call quotations nominally unchanged. Java is held firmly on a basis of rail former rates, without further business reported. Sugars. Raws continue to show a pretty full amount of stock ottering, and a very good Keneral assortment of samples, but buyers have appeared in rather letter" humor to-day, and the business proves quite large. We find an Inclination to resort to the old policy of secrecy on transactions, which lias a tendency to raise some doubts over the exact condition of the market; but, without altering quotationsions we should call matteis firmer at the close at. full current rate. Bales late last evening and to-day of 5K) hhds muscovado, etc., r 7c; 2i9 hhds do do, tf'-Hrti7c; 2J0 hhfis do do 1c; 40il hhds centrifugal He; .jOO hhcN Porto Rico, part 7c ; 'SjO hhds Btitbadoes at c ; 7."i0 bass Mexican tc; 126 hhds melado o;s(ii,i;' Kc; luu hhds Demarara and 150 bhds Cuba muscovado on private terms. Refined were fairly active and about steady, but without showing any important change or new features. Country produce is in moderate request. Receipts of eggs are equal to the demand, and quotations are unchanged. Butter Is dull and unchanged. Foultryls In fair request, and prices are Steady. Canned goods and foreign fruits rule steady and unchanged. Seeds are quiet. The demand for dry goods is fairly active, Snd prices are fluctuating but little. The New York Bulletin says: Domestic Ooo3s. There has been a continued light demand for nearly all domestic productions at first hands, and buyers are neemingly operating In strict accordance with the actual requirements of enrrent trade. The jobbing tra.e has been generally quiet, but there was a fair demand for light reassortments of seasonable goods through the medium of orders from Interior retailers, many of -whom are doing a satisfactory business, jadg- . ng by the frequency of their reorders. Cotton goods have exhibited very little animation In agents' hands, and the jobbing distribution was only of moderate proportions. Prices are fairly steady on leading makes of "brown, bleached and colored cottons, but cheviots and cottonades continue unsettled and less active than could, be desired. Corded piques are In moderate request, but prices are irregular and in some cases very fow. Prints. The condition of the print market remains without material cbauge. Special Btyles of light fancies in dress effects, etc., are In fair demand, but ordinary fancies are slow of sale. Good styles of 56x00 prints are in steady request, and the supply of such eoods Is strictly moderate. Low priced shirtings continue Tairly active, and firm at current quotations. Wide prints, though sluggish in first hands, are Jobbing in moderate quantities, the best makes being relatively mnch more active than Inferior work. Ginghams continue more active than any other fabrics of domestic manufacture, and leading makes of dress styles and staples are In most cases sold ahead of production, while prices are very firmly maintained. Hamming birtls are Very fond of flowers. The Middletown (Cal.) Press tells of one of the little fellows that went off on a "new scent," decidedly: "A young gentleman of this village has one of the rarest pets, a humming bird, which has a nest near his home, and which has become so thoroughly tamed that it readily feeds Irom his hand. A laughable incident occurred recently while he was feeding it. He had been holding fuchsias and other flowers in his hand, from which the little beauty was enjoying a fine repast, and he bad also given it some syrup. Suddenly a blossom, which has lately appeared on the young gentleman's proboscis, attracted the attention of the attention of the bird, and be made a dive for it, finding it a fraud when it was reached. When a nose gets so attractive with blossoms that even humming birds go for it, it is time the owner of such a nose donned the blue ribbon." Moments of Melody. I remember once, says Hazlitt, strolling along the margin of a stream, in one of those low sheltered valleys on Salisbury plain, where the monks of former oges planted chapels and built hermits' cells. There was a little parish church near, but tall elms and quivering alders kid it from the sight, when, all on a sudden, I was startled by the sound of the full organ pealing on the ear, accompanied by rustic voices, and the willing choir of village maids and children. It rose, indeed, "like an exhalation of rich distilled perfumes." The dews from a thousand pastures were gathered in its softness; the silence of a thousand years Fpoke in iL It came upon the heart like the calm beauty of death; fancy caught the sound, and faith mounted on it to the skies. It filled the valley like a mist, and still poured out its endless chant, and still it swells upon the ear, and wraps me in a golden trance, drowning the noisy tumult of the world American Potatoes In England. Steadily our industries are pressing on English products. The London Times asserts that even American potatoes threaten to drive out the home bred article. It is Hot so many years ago but the proposition that an American potato was equal to an English one would have been ridiculed. Oar seed growers introduced the choicer American varieties to public notice, and they soon won their way to public favor. The Times now notes that American potatoes no longer come into their market as "seed," but have, daring the last year, taken the higher ground of "wares," being imported in large quantities for direct consumption. Waiting-lo (Jet Wicked Again. ITho Truth. A priest once chanced to hear, unpercievea, a fierce verbal onslaught by one Irish market woman on another. "Ga on, go on," at last said the matron attacked ; "you know I'll not answer ye, because I've been to confession this morning, and I'm in a state of grace. But wait till I get out of it!"
