CHARITY.
Oh ! it were better far I deem. That hope were never known. Than that each day It should arise But to be, overthrown. i h ! It were better far, I deem, That iove were never mine. Than that Its fleeting lignt alone Upon my soul should shine. Ah, yea! I deem It better far That naught but charity. And faith In God's unceasing care Should e'er abide in me. For hope and love, like fragrant flowers. Both share a common grave; But charity, too pure for earth. Returns to Hlm'who gave. FARM ""aMdThOUSEHOLD. Lawss. Clue grass (poa peatensis) mixed trith white clover forms the choicest of lawns; two bushels of blue grass and six pounds of white clover per acre. Mix timothy with it if yon please. A mixture is better than a single kind; sow at the rate ef three bushels per acre of this mixed seed. The sweet vernal grass is excellent to mix with blue grass and white clover for a lawn. It is fragrant and beautiful when in blossom. Washing Sheep. Michigan sheep breeders, in recent convention, resolved, without a dissenting voice, to "discard the practice of washing" as cruel to the Animal and not productive of the desired result cleansing of the wooL Members declared their preference to submit to "a Just dockage'' at the hands of buyers. There was an entire agreement that the proper time for shearing is from the 1st to the 5th of May, and not later than the lOtn. Whitewash for Poultry Houses. Into the whitewash pail, while the limewater is still hot, drop a teacupful ot soft boiled rice, and mix thoroughly. Then pour into a quart pot of cold water say ten or twelve drops of crude carbolic acid. Mix this into the rest and swab the interior of your hen house with it. For outside, use rock salt dissolved instead of boiled rice, and dispense with carbolic acid. No other preparation of whitewash ever equalled this for poultry buildings. Farmers' Advocate. Cure for Sweest. I have used the following many times is the last forty years, and never knew it to fail: Take 12 ounces of salt pork;' fry the greese from if thoroughly; dissolve three handfulsof salt in the hot grease; take three hen's eggs; bruise them fine, sbelJs md all; stir thoroughly with the grease, and salt when warm enough to dissolve the eggs, but not to cook. Apply to the part affected every other day until you see an improvement; then as often as Sou think best. Warm it in well with a red ot shovel after each application. Usually two or three applications will cure. Country Gentleman. Sf.eiis; for Pasture. New pasture may be produced most speedily by preparing the ground as early as practicable in spring by plowing, harrowing, etc., sc as to give a fine, smooth, mellow surface to 'he soil, and then sow the grass seed alone, or without the intervention of any grain crop. If the soil Is rich, and the grass gets an early start, it will make a good growth early in summer, but it may not be advisable to turn in animals on the young plants before midsummer, and then only when the ground is hard and dry. . Clover and timothy may be sown together; or clover and orchard grass, except in such localities as orchard grass does not succeed well. This grass must be kept grazed rather short, or it will becorns hard and unpalatable, and is objected to on this account by some good farmers who wish to allow their pastures to make a heavy growth. K it is intended to allow the pasture to remain several years, and the soil is rich with a good deal of vegetable matter, a portion of Kentucky blue grass may be mixed with the grass seed. In order to secure a good dense pasture sow three or four times as much seed as is 'done in common practice. Good Fowls for Layix;. A noted writer on fowls says: "For laying hens, select large, strong, healthy birds of the Leghorn varieties, with large, square bodies, without regard to fine points, such as pure white flat ear lobes, or very yellow legs, or combs with just rive points, or plumage that is perfectly white in the white variety, or without a white speck in the brown. It idkiot that these points are any detriment to the health or the vigor of the birds, but to a constitution has been too often sacrificed to them, which often results in a strain of enfeebled though handsome fowls. The Leghorns are accli mated American breeds, which originated from birds brought from the Mediterranean, and they have been often, improved in this country by circumstances that have given them a pre-eminent position for the farmer, when birds such as are above recommended as selected." In regard to fowls for market he adds: "Other breeds or crosses from them j are much better than the Leghorns or any i of the smaller breeds. Chickens that are the j result of a Dorkin cock and Brahma hens are Moreover, they are hardy, fleshy, tender and j fine flavored. Houdans in place of Dorkings are also good to cross on Brahmas, or to breed i with the first mentioned cross, as they keep 1 tip size and quality. Plymouth Rocks are -also good table fowls, and are good to cross with the above." Lamexess ix SiiEEr. The principal part of the body is supported by the heel or back part of the foot. The front part ia, from its pointed nature, well adapted to preserve the foothold and prevent slipping, particularly in ascending rocky declivities; and in sucn situations, and particularly if the animal has to travels the wear of the horn at the toe is equal to its growth. But in wet pastures, or on soft soil, the growth of the toe is much greater than the wear, and consequently this part often grows extremely long and irregular, so that it separates from the quick, and dirt insinuates and lameness and a troublesome wound are the consequences, sometimes leading to foot rot. This might be prevented by cutting off the supertluous horn with a knife. The foot of the sheep often becomes sore from traveling, particularly on sandy roads. In this case it is the heels and the skin between them that sutler, but timely rest will set the matter right, and alittle oil of tar may be applied to the wound. Sometimes the binex canal (an inflection of the skin between the digits above the clefts of the hoof) becomes the seat of disease and the cause of lameness; sand may penetrate, or the parts may be chafed by much walking in the dirt, and inflammation and ulceration are the consequences. ' This part may be cleaned and dressed with tincture myrrh and tincture of aloes, equal parts mixed. If proud flesh forms It should be kept down by a few applications (with a feather) of muriate of ammonia. These various injuries otten prove very troublesome, from the circumstance of the sheep being exposed (particularly in the fall of the year) to dust and moisture and the vicissitudes of the weather, .and 'sometimes prove the forerunner of a stilt more troublesome malady the foot rot, rairie Farmer. Sitcatioh or the t. RCHAED. a northern slope in most localities is ' preferable, as it retards the time of blossoming sufficiently to escape late spring frosts. It also prevents late fall growths, so as to insure perfect buds and well ripened wood. Second, thus situated they are almost entirely exempt from the ravstres of codling moth and other insects. Tney all seek a, warm and southern slope, and the codling' moth in such a situation has usually come forth and laid its eggs before the trees on the colder northerly lope have blossomed. The ground, if clayey, is best and most cheaply prepared by plowing early in the fall up and down the hill in line the width that it is intended to place the rows of trees, taking care that the middle or "dead" furrows shall be on the line of the intended rows. This plowing should, be repeated later In the fall if possible; if not, the dead furrow should be plowed oa deeply or subsoiled. Ia therpringthe
land should be plowed at least twice, reversing the contour of the land by striking the ridge both times where dead furrows are made the previous fall. We now have at least pulverized, drained, a rated earth in which to plant the trees, being very much unlike the usual kettle-shaped hole, which in clay lands holds water like a jug. Well decomposed manure should be applied broadcast and worked into the soil, unless it is pretty fertile. Thebest and only one of the ordinary crops that should be raised in youne orchards and usually in old ones, too. if under the plow is Indian corn; the worst is oats. The Ilon-eheld. Take a nice clean coffee bag (which your grocer will give you), cut the size of a small rug, hem if you like, then take red worsted or knitting yarn, cut in lengths, andafringe around the mat as a tidy, then work a figure in the center as on canvas, also a border. Preparing Lard to Keep Through Summer. To one gallon of lard put one ounce of sal soda,' dissolved in a gill of water. Do not fill your kettle more than half full, for it will foam and perhaps boil over. No other water is required than what the soda is dissolved in. When it is done it is very clear, and will keep two years. Strain through a coarse cloth and set away. t'pisi a Cut Ham. Make a nice stuffing of finely crumbled bread, season with pepper and celery seed, and heat it with a small bit of butter. Fill the open space in the ham with this dressing, making it look like a whole ham. Smooth over the surface and heat in the oven slowly, then bake half an hour. Then cover with grated bread, sprinkle over a little sugar, brown, and serve. 'hristian Union. Spinach axd Eg;s. Carefully look over and clean the spinach in several waters; boil j for about ten minutes in salted water; take up and place on the back of a sieve that it i may drain; press any remaining water from 1 the spinach, and put into a frying pan'with j two or three tablespoonf uls of butter, a little salt and peppery keep constantly stirring j and cutting with a knife until dry. Put j into an iron kettle one tablespoonfui of butj ter, three tablespoonf uls of water, and one ! teacupful of white sugar. Boil until ready to candy, then throw in three quarts of ! corn, nicely popped. Stir briskly until the ! candy is evenly distributed over the corn, j Set the kettle from the fire, and stir until it i is cooled a little and you have each grain : separate and crystalized with the sugar. Care should be taken not to have too hot a J fire, lest you scorch the corn when crjstaliz ing. Nuts of any kind. prepared In this way t j are delicious. ; Selt.ctiso Meats. In selecting beef to j j roust, if it ba for a small family, the rib is j by far the best and most tender cut; have I some of the bones removed, then make your j ' butcher skewer the beef. The bst beef j ' steak for broiling is porter-bouse. The ben : , beef for a la mode is the round; have the j ! lonee removed and trim off the gristle. For ! j corned beef the round is also the best. For j j a mutton roast choose the saddle, shoulder, j or the loin and haunch. The leg should be j j boiled. Small rib chops are best for broil- j I ing; those cut from the leg are generally tough. Mutton cutlets to bake are taken ' from the neck. For roast veal the loio, I breast or shoulder is good. Teal .chops are best for frying; cutlets are more apt to be tough. In selecting beef take that which has a loose grain, easily yielding to pressure, of a dark red color, smooth, with whitish fat; if the lean is purplish and the fat'is yellow it is poor beef. Grass fed is lightest, ox the best, and next heifer. Perhaps the nicest mutton roast is a small leg, the bone taken out, and the cavity stuffed with forced meat. The best beef roast is (for three) about two and a half or three pounds of jxirter-house. Sirloin ranks next. A rump roast is very nice. Two or three pounds is a great plenty for three. In chops I think that from the hind leg of mutton oest, unless you get a "meaty" sirloin. The same in pork; about one and a half pounds is sufficient; beafsteak about the same quantity. Porterhouse is cheaper than sirloin, baying less bone. Rump steak and round, if well pounded to make them tender, have the best flavor. '"A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver. When the body becomes diseased, the mind is thereby neces airily influenced. National wars, state dissensions, neighborhood broils, and family differences, are more frequently than otherwise the result of diseased and disordered constitutions. When the body is suffering, the mind, acting in sympathy, will become irritated and perplexed. When the physical system is in health, the mind perceives things in their true light, and the disposition assumes a very different phase. Nothing more directly tenos to destroy the happy, cheerful disposition of a woman, and render her peevish, nervous and fretfnj, than a constant endurance of uterine d' -orders. The diseases peculiar to woman' take away the elasticity and bouyancy of health and reduce her body and mind to a mere wreck. Dr. Tierce's Favorite Prescription is a real peacemaker in a family. No woman suffering from uterine disorders can afford to be without this remedy. The Favorite Prescription saves unnecessary doctor bills, prevents divorces, wards off suicides, brings back bouyancy, joyous feelings, restores the woman to health, and her family to happiness. Mr. EniTOR Having read in your paper reports of the remarkable cures of catarrh, I am induced to tell "what I know about catarrh," and I fancy the "snntf" and "mnaling tube" makers (mere dollar grabbers) would be glad if they could emblazon a similar cure in the paper. For 2U yearn I suffered with catarrh. The nasal passages became completely closed. "Snuff," "dust," "ashes,""inhaliiis: tubes" and "sticks" wouldn't work, though at Intervals I would sniff up the so-calied catarrh snuff until I became a valuable tester for such medicines. 1 gradually grew worse, and no one can know how much I suffered or what a miserable being I was. My head ached over my eyes so that I was confined to my bed for many successive days, ftutlerlng the most Intense 'pain, which at one time lusted continuously for itvs hours. All tense of smell and taste gone, sight and hearing impaired, body shrunken and weakened, nervous system shattered, and constitution broken, and I was hawking and spitting seveneighths of the time.
