LEFT ALONE AT EIGHTY. "What did yoa ssy, dear breakfast? Somehow I've slept too late; You are very kind, dear Kflie o tell them not to wait. I'll dress a quick as ever I can; My old bands tremble sore, And Polly, who use to help, dear heart ! Lies t'other side o' the door. rut up the old pipe, deary -1 couldn't smoke to-day; I'm sort of dazed and frightened, And don't know what to say. It's lonesome la the house, here, And lonesome out o'door I never knew what lonesome meant, In all my life before. The bees j?o hamming, the whole day long, And the first Jane roue has blown, And 1 am eighty, dear Ird, to-day Too old to be lelt alone ! . 0 heart of love ! so still and cold ! O precious lips, so white! For the first sad hours In sixty years. You were out of my reach last nhht. , You've cut the flower. You're very kind. 8he rooted it last Ma v: It Jwas only a slip; I pulled the rose, And threw the stem away; . But she, swfet, thrifty soul, bent down, And planted it where she stood. Dear, maybe the flowers are living," she said, "Asleep in this bit of wood." 1 can't rest, deary I cant rest; Liet the old man have his will. Lather Benson is writing another book. Forty car loads of Ice are shipped from Kankakee daily. The rage for fancy porJlry is on the increase at Lafayette. Warm winters make large crops of potato bags in the summer. The wheat crop of Wayne county is in a magnificent condition. Croquet mallets are being extensively cultivated by young amateurs. The dealers in agricaitur.il implements are having harvest now cash harvest. The graduating class of the Lafayette high school will have seventeen members this year. Beecher was presented with a handsome floral star at the conclusion of his lecture at I'ort "Wayne. . Wild pigeons are in the woods every night on their way north. Blue birds and robins are again in their old haunts. Fifty maple and elm trees will be planted in the Valparaiso public square this spring by order of the county commissioners. Montgomery county farmers sold some wheat to a fellow representing himself as an agent of a Cincinnati house, and now they want the word confidence banished from the dictionary. Xow is the time to work the roads. Pot them in good condition now", keep them in repair through the summer, and without any fresh grading after September they will be better next winter than last. Lafayette Dispatch: Her. Charles 1L Henderson has resigned the pastorate of the Terre Haute Baptist church ; he affirms that "he ia no longer able ta subscribe to some of the doctrines of his church, and particularly to the doctrine of endless punishment." Mr. H. ia a son of Albert Henderson, of this city. A party of explorers recently examined a mound about three miles east of Sullivan. They removed the loose dirt from the top, and a few inches below the surface struck a hard cement, which could be scarcely penetrated with a pick. They dug through it, however, (it was about six inches thick) and then came to loose earth mixed with beads, human teeth, rude earthen ware and arrow points. Several skeletons were also fonnd. A more thorough examination will soon be made. ALL KOHTS. On the same day and at 'the same hour that Theron Barnuin died in his hotel in SL Louis last Sunday his cousin, A. 8. Barnum, died in Baltimore. , Dentist, to old lady about purchasing some false teetb: "For mastication, my dear madara, they can only be surpassed by nature herself." Old lady: "O laws, doctor! I don't care nothing about the mastication if I can only qhaw with 'em." A correspondent of Harier's Magazine sends to "the Drawer" a copy of an order received by a Broome county dentist, which says: "My mouth is three inches acrost, fiveeight inches threw the jaw. Sum humoky on the edge. Shaped like a hoss shew, toeforrad. If yon want me to be more partikler, I shal have to cum thar." San Raft-al Journal: A working girl said she thought Arizona would be a good place for her. "Yea," we said, "wages are good there, and the prospects of a husband are no doubt better than here in California." '-O," said she, "I am not enough forehanded yet to marry; I could not support a husband." What a noble army of young men there is waiting for that girl to get ready! Speaking of the sad fate of several of the past congressmen of Kansas the Lawrence Journal sayl: "Martin F. Conway, who was at one time a man of brilliant parts and promises, is now in the Insane asylum. Parrott, the accomplished orator- and genial gentleman, Is an insane wreck; Lane died by bis own hand, and Cart Wilder met an early death by Consumption. Truly, it is a sad. record." Ladies are likely to benefit by the great eastern conflict. Dealers in human hair have been traveling within the last three or four months through Bulgaria and Roumeli. and buying up all the tressea tbe unfortunate wives and daughters of the refugees are willing to sell. Some of these tresses are said to be over three feet long, ind all those of blonde and auburn shades nave been sent to America. . "How do yon like the president?" I asked, yesterday, a wise old journalist, who is nonpartisan, and who has seen many presidents come and go. "Oh, I like the president firstrate; bat I don't Hire the attitude of this administration.' "What is the attitude of this administration?" I asked. The wise old man dropped his pocket handkerchief on the floor in a confused, shapeless heap, and said, "Well, that's about the attitude of tbe administration formless, mushy." I am afraid this is too true. Washington letter. . An interesting case of transplantation, according to the Herald, has been recently accomplished at the Massachusetts general hopital. Last November a little son of Mr. William England, of West Somerville, while
at work in the factory of Mason and hamlin, had his arm terribly lacerated by machinery. He was sent to the hospital, where he remained about four months, having had transplanted to the injured member 150 pieces of skin, taken from the several patients, and some from colored persons, all of which united except the colored flesh, which had to be removed and that of white persons inserted. The arm is now perfectly healed. In 1831-32 some sophomores of Bowdoin college took a freshman by night and forcibly removed him, kicked him and were taking him to a pump, when one of the assailants found the victim did not move. He said: "The fellow is dead." They raa away. . The
freshman was only feigning death. After the. event he refused to speak of it, but waited quietly for proof as to the identity of the attacking party. At last he got his proof, prosecuted the - sophomores in court, and hazing at Bowdoin was at an end. Alexandre Dumas, in going through his fathet's papers, found a piece in five nets, written by the dead man, and founded upon "Balffamo." He showed it toM. Duqnesnel, who thought that the subject might have received a greater development. So M. Dumas set to work, cutting, extending and rearranging, but respecting the novel and the piece as mucil as possible. He says: '"To know the author of the piece is therefore not e&"y, but one means exists for setting the point; the public shall decide. If the play succeeds, it will be my father's; if it fails, it is mine." A check has been put upon the proverbial looseness of Connecticut divorces by the new law in that state bearing upon the subject, which limits the causes for which divorces may be granted to the following: Adultery, fraudulent contract, willful desertion for three years, seven years' absence and not heard from, habitual intemperance, intolerable cruelty and imprisonment for infamous crime in the state prison. Of course some of these specified grounds will be abused, even though the schedule is liberal, but the nutmeg state now about averages with the rest of New England on this question, which was more than could be said of it in the past. Mr, Editor Having read In your paper reports of the remarkable cures of catarrli, I am Induced to tell "what I know about catarrh," and I fancy the "snuff" and "innaling tube" makers (mere dollar grabbers) would be glad if they could emblazon a similar cure in the papers. For 2tt years I suffered with catarrh. The nasal passages became vorapletely closed. "(Snuff," ,dust," "ashes," "Inhaling tubes" and "sticks" wouldn't work, though at Intervals I would sniff up the so-called catarrh snuff until I became a valuable tester for Mich medicines. 1 gradually grew worse, and no one can know how much 1 suffered or what a miserable being . 1 was. My head ached over my eyes so that I was confined to my bed for many niiccesstve days, suffering the most Intense pain, which -at one time lasted continuously for ItiS hours. All sense of smell and taste, gone, sight and hearing impaired, body shrunken and weakened, nervous system .shattered, and constitution, broken, and I was hawking and spitting ' seveneighths of the time. I prayed for death to relieve me of my suffering. A favorable notice in your paper of Dr. Cage's Catarrh Remedy induced me to purchase a package and use it with Dr. llerce s Nasal Douchi, which applies the remedy by hydrostatic pressure, the only way compatible with common sense. Well, Mr. Kditor, It did not cure me in three-fourths of a second, nor in one houror month, but in less than eight minutes I was relieved, and in three months I was entirely cured, and have remaimxl so for over sixteen months. While using the Catarrh Remedy, I used Dr. Pierce's Uolden Medical Discovery to purify my blood and strengthen my stomach. - I also kept my liver active and lowels regular by the use of his Pleasant Purgative Pellets. If my experience will induce other sufforers to seek the same means of relief, this letter will have answered Its purpose. Yours traly, H.D. REMICK. A.CLOUD OF WITNESSES.
