JLN ASTRONOMICAL PUZZLE.
A Moon Which Rises in the West A Ifew Theory to Account for the Ex traordlvary Speed of the Inner Moon of Harm. l.New York Tribune. Wasuisgtox, March 5. Troles'or Asaph Hall, the discoverer of the . moons of Mars, has for some time been interested in a theory suggested by Professor M. II. Poolittle, of the coast survey, explanatory of the peculiarity m the revolution of the inner satellite, which makes its journey about the planet in a shorter space of time than that occupied by the planet in revolving upon its axes. As is is well understood this fact presents an anomaly in astronomical science. Last Saturday night Professor Poolittle explained the full details of his theory before the philosophical society of this city. . His paper attracted marked attention from the members of the society. The observed periodic time of the inner moon of Mars around its primary is a fraction over seven hours. The revolution of Mars itself on its own axis is accomplished in about twenty-four hours. The discrepancy between the periods of the planet and its satellite in favor of the quicker revolution of the latter can not, in accordance with the terms of the nebular hypothesis, be accounted for without conceiving the existence of some cause which has operated to shorten the radios of the satellite's orbit. In explaining his theory of the discrepancy referred to, Professor Doolittle mentioned the fact that the radii of planets are shortened by any resistance which they may meet. From this arises the paradox, well known to astronomers, that the velocity of planets is acceler&tf d by resistance. It has been conjectured that the lominiferous ether possesses the power of resistance to the planetary system. This was predicted on the observed acceleration of Encke's comet in some of its revolutions. Mr. Doolittle dismissed such conclusions as to the luminiferous ether as referring to a substance so different from ordinary matter that it is scarcely proper to say what is credible or incredible in regard to it. He called attention, however,- to the existence of matter in the inter planetary spaces which is not purely conjectural. This matter is that of the shooting stars or aerolites. This known "isteb-stkllar" matter is assumed by his theory as being that which may possibly hare operated as a sufficient cause of resistance to planetary bodies to shorten their radii and accelerate their velocity: This being granted, the unique phenomena observed in the rapid revolution of the inner moon of Mars would be explained. It has been observed that a larger number of aerolites strike the earth in front than in the rear. While other causes of planetary acceleration through resistance have already been conjectured, this only known cause has been largely overlooked. Professor Doolittle showed that the action of the aerolites would tend to increase the comparative rapidity of a satellite in three different ways: First, by striking the satellite and increasing its rapidity of revolution in the manner already explained by making it revolve in a smaller orbit; secondly, by striking the primary, thus increasing its masi and its attraction of the satellite; thirdly, by increasing the mass of the primary and thereby consuming its original velocity through the taking up of this increased addition to hi mass. However slight may be the annual average effect thus produced, any assignable diminution of radius and increase of velocity is attainable in a sufficient number of years, and it may be confidently set down as a matter of positive scientific knowledge that if these causes now in op oration continue to operate as efficiently as, in the past, the inner moon of liars has simply reached a condition which all planets and satellites are destined ultimately to reach; and the time will come when our moon will rise in the west and set in the east. The inner moon of Mars, by reason of going faster than the planet, presents thu phenomenon now to an inhabitant o Mars. There is reason, however, to believe, Professor Doolittle asserts, that these causes operating to accelerate 1 the velocity of planets will not continue to operate with undiminished efficiency. It is known that many aerolites belong permanently to the solar system, and it is not unlikely that they all do. If so. their quantity must be finite and exhaustible and probably nearly exhausted. At the conclusion of the paper, which was listened to with earnest attention, the new theory was discussed by members of the society in a manner which showed that it had mada an impression, especially upon those familiar with ASTRONOMICAL BCIE5CK and speculation. Professor Hall, who was present, declared that not only is Laplace's nebular hypothesis insufficient to account for the acomalous position and velocity of the minor moon of Mars, but that the supplementary hypothesis, which was adopted to explain the irregular motion of Encke's comet, also tails to afford a satisfactory explanation of that phenomenon. He said that from the latest computations of that comet its velocity appears to be accelerated in some of its periodic revolutions, and not in others, which is explained upon Mr. Doolittle's theory, as the comet would probably encounter aerolites in some of its revolutions and fail to . encounter them in others while all the causes hitherto conjectured would be regular in their action. The discussion was continued warmly a considerable time fter the regular adjournment of the society by Professor Hall t and others. Among those present at this meeting of the philosophical society were Professor Simon Newcomb, of the naval observatory; Professor Hilgard, of the coast survey; Commander Hull, hydrographer cf the coast surrey; Mr. Dall, of the coast survey and Smithsonian institution; President Welling, of Columbia university; Dr. Attlael, chemist, lately -in Japan; Professor Gilbert and Captain Dutton, of the Powell exploration, and Drs. Woodward and Billings, of the medical museum. Several of them participated in the discussion. Front m Saloon to m Pnplt. Syracuse Standard. A little over ten months ago Charles F. An Open Letter It Speaks for I U IT. Kockport, Mass., Arril 2, ls77. Mb. Editor Having read in your paper jeports of the remarkable cures of catarrh, I am induced to tell "what I know about catarrh," and I fancy the "snuff " and "inhaling tube" makers (mere dollar grabbers) would be glad if they could emblazon a similar cure in the papers. For 2G years I suffered with catarrh. The nasal passages became completely cloyed. "Snuff," "dust," "ashes," 'inhaling tubes" and "sticks" wouldn't work, though at intervals I would sniff up the so-called catarrh snuff, nntil I became a valuable te-ter f r such medicines. I gradually grew worse, and no one can know how much I suffered or what a miserable being I was. My head ached over my eyes so that I was confined to my bed for many successive days, suffering the most intense pain, which at one time lasted continuously for 16$ hours. All sense of smell and taste gone, sight and hearing impaired, body shrunkened and weakened, nervous system shattered and constitution broken, and I was hawking and spittingseven-eijhths of the time. I prayed for death to relieve me of my suffering. A favorable notice in vour paper of Dr. Sige's Catarrh Remedy induced me to purchase a package, and use it with Dr. Pierce's Nasal Douche, which ap plies the remedy by hydrostatic pressure, the only way compatible with common sense. Well, Mr. Editor, it did not cure me in three fourths of a second, nor in one hour or month, but in less than eight minutes I was relieved, and in three months entirely cured, and have remained so for over lf months. While nsing the Catarrh Remedy 1 used Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery to purify my blood and strengthen my rtomach. I also kept my liver active and bowels regular by the u?e of his Pleasant Purgative Pellets If my experience will induce other sufferers to seek the same means of relief, this letter will have answered its purpose.
