Weary and homesick and distressed, They wauder east, they wander west. And are battled and beaten and blown about By the winds of the wilderness of doubt; To stay at home Is best. ' Then stay at home, my .heart, and rest; The bird Is safest in it nest; O'er all that flutter their wings and fly A hawk is hovering in the sky ; To stay at home is best. Atlantic for February ZEKE AND POLLY AT THE THEATER. 'How much be you goin' to tax us to go in?" said Zeke. as he and Polly stepped up to the box office at Robinson's the other night, just as the window was opened, for they had come early to make sure of getting all these was to be of the show. The scale of prices was explained by the ticket seller. "Crab cider and mince meat!'' ejaculated Zeke; "that's more'n they charge at a circus with two clowns. Can't yon let ns set on the top benches for a quarter apiece? You'll not find us anyways stingy about buyin' lemonade and peanuts. What d'ye say? Is it a dicker?" He was informed that the rriees were as unchangeable as the times, and after considerable parley invested in a couple of balcony tickets, which they both read and examined critically to be sure that no gouge game was larking for t hem in the pasteboard. A few minutes later found them comfortably installed in front seats with eyes wide open drinking in the wonder and magnificance of a theater for the first time. "Ain't it too party for anything?" said Tolly. "Look at all the fine fixin's; an', my sakes! what a boucin' big picter that is" 'meaning the drop curtain. "I never expected to see the like o' that in all my born days. But Where's all the people, I wonder. It'll be too bad and kind o' lonesome for us if nobody else comes." - "A man down at the tavern," remarked Zeke, "was sayin' that nearly every tneater the head woman of this show performs in burns down, and maybe the folks is scared so about it they won't come on that account. Hold on though, there comes two or three down stairs there, and maybe it'll all come right after all. What gits me thongh is, whf 13 they're goin' to have the doin's the ring's full of seats." "But did you ever see anything so splendid as this is?" said Polly, with eyes sparkling in delieht. "See what lots o' lamp3 they've got. An' such whoppin' lookin' glasses big as a barn door. What a sight o' money it must a' cost." Enormous!" chimed in Zeke. "As much as a thousand dollars, I'll bet. Bat I wonder what them cubby holes is there, with all them fancy fix ups" meaning the boxes. "I 'spect tiieni's for the band,- maybe,.' ventured Polly. ,-I don't see anywhere elie to put 'em." 'Like as not," said Zeke, "but they're terrible slow about gitcin' started. See how the folks is beginnin' to pour in, though" and he laid his head on the railing aud busied his eyes watching the crowd gathering in. "Zeke!" said Polly, quickly, pulling his arm, ''there's some more picters up on the ceilin'." "Sure enough," replied her husband looking up. "I wish we'd a' went in that other gallery. I b'lieve we could a seen better'up there. I s'pose, though, that's the dollar place, and there's no use thro win' money away. Hello! now we'll have the show at last here they come" as the orchestra came shuffling up from under the stage. "It ain't near so nice as a brass band or George Thompson's fiddlin' at parties," siid Polly, with disappointment; but when the overture wastinally completed and the curtain went up on the first act eyes and mouths never opened wider in astonishment and delight than did theirs at that delectable moment. "Potater bags an' prunin' hooks! But. don't that git you?" was Zeke's comment. Polly didn't say anything for some time, but sat almost breathless with attention, and never once took her eyes from the stage till the curtain went down at the close of the act To both ot them the play was a living reality. Their own identity was lost sight of, and their feelings drawn to the highest tension in sympathy for the misfortunes of the "Two Orphans." As the plot thickened and the persecutions of the poor blind girl became more and more heartrending Polly cried outright, and great strangling tears welled up from honest Zeke's noble heart and coursed down ' his rugged cheek, and when the brutal Jacques sprang with a curse upon his crippled brother and hurled him with violence upon the stage, and then seized the sightless girl with a rough hand and hissed out his villainous threat, Zeke, with clenched fist, bated breath and fiery eyes sprang to his feet, and declared tbat flesh and blood couldn't stand that any longer; but Polly pulled him back into the seat, and mollified him somewhat, until the play took a turn. In the final scene, where the orphans are reunited, and the interest becomes intense as the villain see us to tear them asunder, and the maimed Pierre springs to the rescue with an immense knife, the revulsion of feeling was so complete that Zeke threw up his hand and yelled out: "Go it. cripple! That's the medicine for the low lived whelp." And then the soldiers came in and captured the outlaw., and the mother found her long lo3t child, and the lover recovered his sweetheart, and everything else fulminated just as they wanted, but litLs expected; the young couple never felt Llppier or more buoyant in their lives. It had all been so real t3 them that for a minute they could scarcely make out where they were, but with much reluctance they finally came down to earth again, and departed from the place of enchantment. On the walk to their hotel they talked of nothing else. All the incidents were reviewed and each individual character discussed, and through their dreams that nigat flitted shadows of what they had seen during their first visit to the theater. MKFO LHU'OR. Keel peat fr Adulterated Drinks. New York World. The presentation of Mr. Story's liquor bill to the legislature has already been mentioned in the World. Jlr. Story proposes that the board of health of this city shall determine and publish a standard of purity for wines, spirituous liquors, ales and beer, and shall aend its tables to the boards of excise of all cities having a greater population than 75,000, such tables to be held to be the standard of parity for wines, spirituous liquors, ales and beer offered for sale in those cities in less quantities than five gallons. The bill provides that it shall be made unlawful to sell or to offer for sale any wines, liquors, ales and beer which do not conform to such standard, the penalty being forfeiture of .license. It is claimed that if this act shall be passed the traffic In adulterated liquors will cease, and that the low groggeries must, consequently, be closed. Then crime among

the lower classes, according to this argu

ment, will be decreased. The fact may be recalled, in this connection, tbat when years ago the board of excise ordered an investigation Into the adulteration of liquors, it was discovered by eminent chemists that none ot the samples taken from the neighborhood of Baxter and Mulberry streets had been adulterated. A well known medical expert on this subject said at the time that the liquors were only too pure, and accordingly gave it as his opinion that pure, unadulterated liquors produce the greatest amount of intoxication. The following recipes, which were- found in an establishment seized by sheriffs officers, will be interesting as showing that there is a vast difference between pure and adulterated liquors. -The recipes here given were submitted to the careful scrutiny of a well known druggist. He said that the mixtures were not such as might be called injurious, would certainly be more safe than pure liquor and offer an argument against Mr. Story's bill. The recipes are as follows: OLD BOURBOX WHISKY. 40 gallons pare spirit, 5 gallons good Bourbon whisky, 2 ounces spirit nitre, 2 ounces lusel oil (from corn) cut In alcohol, totand four days and use It. Most of our readers have probably never read the "private circular" sent out to all the national banks by order of the American bankers' association, whose third annual convention was held last September in New lorlc It should be read bv evervbodv. It speaks for ifeelf, and needs no comment. The following is a copy of this remarkable document: It is advisable to do all In your power to sustain snch daily and weekly newspapers. es pecially tne agricultural anu religious press, awill oppose the issuing of greenback paper money, and that you also withhold patronage or favors from all applicants who are not willing to oppose tne greenback or government issue of paper money. So long as the green back men are satisnea witn tne interconvertible bond, no harm can come to our Interests, but to repeal the law creating national banks, or to restore to circulation the government issue of paper money, will be to provide the people with money from other than oar own supplying, and will, therefore, seriously affect jour Individual profits as banker and lender. T. mi By an immense practice, extending thronph a period of years, having within that time treated many thousand canes of those diseases eculiar to woman, I have been enabled to perfect a most potent and agreeable medicine that meets the indications presented by that class of diseases with positive certainty andf exastness. To designate this natural specific compound, I have named it Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription. The term, however, is but a feeble expression of ray hiph appreciation of its value, based upon m j wn personal observation. As a cloe ebscrrer, I have, while witnessing its positive results In the few special diseases incident to the separate organism of woman, singled it out as the climax or crowning gen of my medical career. On its merits, as a positive, sale, and effectual remedy for this class of diseases, and one that will, at all times and under ail circumstances, act kindly and in harmony with tho laws which govern the female system. I am willing- to stake mr reputation as a physician. Kay, even more, so confident am 1 that it will not disappoint the most sanguine expectations of a single invalid lady who uses it for any of the ailments for which I recommend it, that 1 offer and sell it under A POSITIVE GUARANTEE. If a beneficial effect is not experienced by the t:roe two-thirds of the contents of the bottle are used, I will, on return of the bottle, twothirds of the medicine having been taken according to directions, and the case being one for which 1 recommend it, promptly refund the money paid for it. Had I not the most perfect confidence in its virtues, I could not offer it as I do under these conditions; but having witnessed its truly miraculous enres in thousands of cases, I feel warranted and perfectly safe In risking both my reputation aud my money ou Its merits.
