The past week has been only a moderate one for business men. The demand for almost all kinds of merchandise has been only moderate. The number of country buyers visiting the city has been small, and they have purChased only Just what they need at t he present time. Quotations have, fluctuated but little, and the general markets may be reported as being quiet, steady and unchanged. During the first part of the week the provision market took a firmer stand, owing to the favorable news with regard to a large foreign demand if EnglaDd was drawn Into the eastern war, but as the news of the signing of the peace conditions lessened the prospects of the foreign trade increasing, the packers and holders of meat became more willing to sell at the ruling prices, and the market to-day was quiet, with but few transactions noted. The grocery market has been fairly active during the week, the order tiade being about as heavy as usual at this time of the year, and quotations both of staple and fancy goods rule steady. In reviewing the market the New York Bulletin says: Coffees. Brazils do not yet reach a settled or encouraging position. Some holders are calculating that the protracted s'ow call from the Interior must have exhauted supplies and formed base for a good distribution when demand again starts up, but Jobbers are Inclined Co wait until this demand does actually show itself before commencing to handle Invoices, and the stock in first hands is almost entirely neglected. Former quotations are named nominally, but with the candid admission that they can not be obtained. From the "Gloria" 1,H1 bags are reported sold. Holders of West India stock are looking for about former rates on most of their accumulations, and offering samples without more than a natural effort to secure customers, but still meet with a somewhat discouraging response on the demand, and the entire market is flat. Within a couple of day some 2,250 bags La5 uara have been sold, part (Coro) ;at 14J4(15c. ava neglected. Sugars. More or less uncertainty continues to be shown on the undertone of the general market lor raws, but buyers may claim about all the present advantages. Some of the stocks remain off the market, but tne supply available mare than satisfies the outlets offered, and a sumcient number of holders have weakened to keep general cost on a downward incline still. The reported failures among importers to-day introduces another disturbing eiement. Values nominally unchanged, but current quotations are foil high. Hales embrace tOO hhds 5ew Orleans to arrive at 6c; 1,600 boxes eiaved, 200 hhds centrifugal and 110 low grade Cuba on p tvate terms. Refined without further change on valuations, but selling very slowly, and the feeling -on the market la weak. . Tbjre has been a fair business transactid in country produce during the latter part of the week, but on Monday and Tuesday the receipts of eggs were heavy, the market became overstocked and prices declined to 10 cents, but on yesterday and to-day the market became a little firmer and quotations went up a cent, . The demand for butter is almost equal to the supply, and choice table qualities meet with ready sale at unchanged prices. Itecelpts of poultry are liberal, and the mar) 1 ket rather dull, vith nothing at all doing in dressed turkeys or chickens. Game rules quiet and prices unchanged. Dealers In dry goods report a fair demand for both staple and fancy goods, and prices are undergoing but few changes. The New York Bulletin of Wednesday, In reviewing the market for the week, says: There was a considerable' addition to the number of buyers In the market during the at week, but business continued light in nearly all departments of the trade. Jobbers from some of the more distant distributing points in the south were rather more liberal in their purchases, hut. In most cases, western and southwestern buyers confined their operations to the selection of such goods as were imperatively required lor the pursuance of current trade, and local and near by jobbers bought sparingly, as a rule. The present rates of freight demanded by tne trunk lines of railroad have created much dissatisfaction among western merchants, who contend, with apparent Justice, that low priced dry goods should not be subjected to a much higher classification than other descriptions of merchandise. The system of "pooling" freights, which went Into operation last July, has also been the cause of f reat discontent, and freights by the trunk ines leaving this city are now so light that many of the leading western lobbers are shipping a considerable portion of their low priced cotton goods, etc., by circuitous, and consequently tardy, but cheaper, routes from Boston. The reclassification of cheap cotton goods by the railroad companies, and on a lower bat tnan at present, la imperatively demanded, and would, probably, entail no loss upon the carriers, as shipments by the trunk lines would be largely Increased thereby. The jobbing trade, though quiet, was about as good as usually witnessed at this time of year, when there are comparatively few retail buyers in the market. The order demand for the most staple goods was fairly satisfactory for the season, and a more active movement is expected about the end of the current month. ' Cotton Goods. There was a steady though moderate demand for all the more staple I mikes of cotton good, and sales, coupled with deliveries on account of orders, reached a fair aggregate amount. Prices ruled fairly steady on nearly all descriptions ot manufactured cottons, and the late advance on denims, docks, tickings, etc., was fully sustained. Jligher pricei wero made on a few popular makes of wide sheetings, but, on the other band, there waa a break in Ixnsdale 4-4 ' bluached snrrttngs to 9c the lowest quotation ever made for lbee well known goods. White roods, pique and Marseilles quilts were In 'better inquiry, but eottonades and ehev'ots moved iess freely than was anticipated. The export of domestics from this port for the -week reached 4,iMi packages, and from Boaton 1 packages, or a total of 4,0w packages. Prints There has been less animation la the priut market than was anticipated, and sales were mostly rtstrlcted to comparatively small lot of new light and medium fancies, which were opened in attractive variety by nearly all the leading agent at the exceptionally low price of 6c, which figure should certainly comxaaud the confidence of the trade and insure a
steadier market than was witnessed last splng. Bnlrtlngs were In fair. request, but staples, robes and Turkey reds continued to drag, and there waa only a band to mouth demaud for dark fancy prints. There is a fair demand reported for foreign fruits and canned goods, with no changes In prices since our last report. Dealers report a fair demand for fish at this season of the year, and values are well maintained. The oil market rules steady, with another advance in linseed to-day. Receipts of wheat throughout the week have been light, and the market is unsettled and lower. It seems as if corn has not touched bottom yet.
