The order trade has been improving daring the last few days, and prices are well maintained. The grocery market has been quite active for the past week or tea days. Sugars and'eoffees axe firm and active. Canned goods are In good, it-quest, and foreign fruits quiet and steady. Receipts of eggs are almost equal to the demand, and prices are undergoing no changes. There Is a fair trade doing in butter. Poultry is quiet a'ud unchanged. Game is steady. - Apples are in good demand, and prices flrm The New' York Bulletin of the 17th says: ConVe. These la still an absence of Kood, solid vigor on the movement of the lirazii grades, and we can find nothing new or Interesting for the day. About former rates are asked and quoted, but they are In reality nominal. In the absence of a basis of actual sales, nothing bavin? changed hands to-day. At New Orleans there has been sold receutiy 4,000 iui;s Rio per "Watch." On th-a mild grides buyers continue to take matters easy, and the demand is slow. The accumulation is pretty full, and shows some very attractive parrels, but lacking the force of a ureossary addition to their supplies for distribution, the majority of Jobber seem Inclined to allow goods to remain in first hands nntll they are wan fid. We bear of no sales lo-day, but the revised record for the week embraces Jf.710 has Maracaiho, 793 do Laguay-ra.-WSavanUla, 1,100 St. Domingo, 270 Mexican and 170 Coal: Rica. Java is slow and nominally nncnanged. The stock other than RIO embraces nl,87u mats Java, frf.218 du Singapore, 2,ti;x Maracalbo, 3,!J8 Laguara, l,t73 Jamaica, ,u -.i. iiuimnu, i iwm nic, W Mexican, 1,81a Auostur.i and '2jb6l Bavanii:. isugars. Raws show very much the same general features so lorig current. The principal holders have the confidence and determination to offer supplies who moderation and only upon a fiositlve aud extrema limit of cot, while in some cases the most dwdrahle samples may be cons dered as withdrawn altogether for the time being. On this basis, therefore, the position Is firm and current quotations are none too hih to represent cellar's views. On the part of buyers, however, the old resistance continues and demand amount t-j little. We have no sales positively reported to-day, but there is an apparently ' well authenticated rumor that within a day or two Koine 2,(W lilils New Orleans here and to arrive have changed bauds. Refined continue well sustained, a little firmer if anything in some canes, and the niuvemeut 1 fairly up to supply. Demand, however, shows more or less of the old caution, and is entered in the main bv small orders. There ha been some activity In the provision market during the past few days, and the market rules quiet kut firm. 1 Flour is dull and unchanged. There is but little life in the wheat market, and prices are unchanged. The corn market continues dull and heavy. There is considerable business doing In dry goods. The New York Bulletin in reviewing that m rket fjrthe past week f-psaki as follows: During the early part of the week under review business continued very quiet with the package houses, but dome lmprof etnent was developed before its close, owing to the arrival of a gcod many prominent western and southwestern buyers, who have been out of the market since the beginning of trie ye-r. Buyers of the ab.vo cIaks were, however, very camioni in their oteratio" s, owing to the check given to the distributing trade by the still Impossible condiiion of the roads In some parts of the interior. There wai a more liberal demand lor some descriptions of goods by Texas and California Jobber, and as considerable quantities of spring woolens, brown ?aud cotorod cottons, while goods, piques, shining print, hosiery, etc., wt re delivered by agents on account of previous orders, the aggregate distribution of the week wa not aliogemer imsat' factory for the time of year, though perhaps 't- in volume than at the corre ponding .iod In some former season. The jobbing trade was devolu of animation, but there was a steady demand for small quantities of seasonable goods by the near by trade, and orders to a Jair aggregate were received from Interior retailers. Light fancy and shining prints were sold to liberal amount by a few of the leading firms having cheap lots to offer, and cotton good were lu tileady though moderate request, but dress goods, hwis and skirts were severally in light demand. Cotton tiood. The cotton goo is market was somewhat irregular during te past week, and while there was a tendency toward higher Firlces on sme leading makes of brown sheetnss, deninos ducks, tickings and c-set Jeans, there was a break in some makes of bleached shirtings, and print cloths were a shaite lower. "Fruit of the Loom." 4-4 bleached shirtings, were reduced by agents to Vc net. tjy days. which price induced liberal purchases, aud there is reason to believe that Jobbers will And it to their intere-t to refrain from subjecting these good' to "cutting" quotations. Alde frbm bleached cottons, in which some large transactions occunrrd. sales were mostly restricted to comparatively small lots of the- various makes of goodisand the aggregate distribution from first hand was only of mode rate pioportions. The exports of domestics from this port for the week ending January 15 reached IM package, and from Boston 167 packages, or a total of 773 packages. Brown Sheetings and Hhlrt'ngs. There wan a steady demand for small selections of brown cottons at first hands, and sales, combined with deliveries on account of bad orders, enabled agents to effect a fair distribution for tne time of year. Leading makes . of fine browns and four-yard browns continue closely sold up, and prices are In most crises firmlytm&lntalned at unchanged quotations. Frinls. There was a continued light movement m fancy prints from agents' hands, though a few leading makesot new spring work were taken with some freedom by California and Texas buyers. Hhlrtings were in fair d'mand, hat staple, robes, mournings and Turkey reds remained dull, npr ng fancies have not. yet boen opened to the general trade, nor has' the opening price been fully determined upon, but agents aie dally receiving new styles irom the works, and there will soon be an ample supply of spring work on the market, though stocks are likely to be much smaller than at he corresponding period of last, year, as very few printers are running their machines to tfielr full capacity, home of the leading Jobbers ?.Um1 large sales of low priced light, fnncy and shfrtlng prints. . The Old 1 'rank I in Fire Insurance ComIany of Philadelphia. In these times of doubt and distrust of moneyed institutions It affords ns pleasure to call the Ettention of our readers to this sterling oil corporation, with its successful record of half a century, during which it has paid many millions of dollars in losses unostentatiously, but always in the spirit of commercial honor. The year just closed, with its ghastly record of disaster to large numbers of individuals and corporations, has added nearly one huitdred Vunitand dollars to the net r.irplusof this, company. This result, so reiissuricg to its patrons, is due to its prudent and conservative management, which ises proverbial as the philosophy of him in whose honor the company was founded. Its assets on the 1st inst. are three millions thiee hundred and sixty-three Utmisand four hundnl and forty five d'dlafs and seventyfour cents, aU invested in eolid and productive securities, readily convertible into cash; and its reserve oyer all pre.ent liabilities, including capil&l, ia tiro .millions eight hundred and c'Kjhty-tevcn thovfaiul one hundred and forty-seven dolhtrt an-1 fifty-five, cents. ' These are the facts of its condition. They are equaled by few, and surpassed by none. It is a mistake, which many cf our readers will learn when it is too late, to accept policies from companies which offer the lowest rate. Mtny companies are selling their policies at It ss than cost. The ' Old Franklin" has persistently refused to do this, and it will continue to refuse, but will continue to is3ue policies at rates as low as is consistent with mutual safety; and when you get them you can rely to the utmost upon perfect indemnity in the hour of disaster.
