The week ending this evening has developed decided increase Iu business In all depart menu of miscellaneous merchandise. Tue spring trade is rapidly approaching floodtide, and merchants have stocks that enables tbem to respond to the largest demands of buyers. Tbe provision market remains quiet and prices steady. The grain market are exhibiting increased animation, with decided firmness In corn and wheat. In dry goods business la fairly active, and prices for all staple articles steady. The New York Dally Bulletin of Monday says: Cotton Goods. There has been a moderate demand at first haads for all seasonable makes o cotton fabrics, but no special degree of activity ha beei noticed in any class of goods. There is a continued disposition to sell some makes of brown and bleached cottons at a concession from nominal holding rates, in order to reduce accumulations, but denims, djred ducks, tickings and the most popular style of . chevlot.4 are uteadi'y held at current quotations. White KooJs are doing well iu Victoria lawns, con is, Marseilles and crochet quilta, rl teures, etc., for which fabrics there Is a steadily firov.L-S Ccmaad, vUK-u militates greatly
against the distribution of foreign eoods of a
hue character. Jobbing quotations lor orown and b'eached cottons are exceedingly irrcgulr, being in many cases considerably below agents' puckag.' prices. Prints. There has leen a fair limid-to-moutli demand for the newest and most tasteful tyles of faiicy and shirting prints from ftgents' htr.ds, and tlie ln?st makes of wide cambrics, cretonnes and fouUmls are meeting with moderate Kales. The Knicke bocker cambrics are tinuly held at 11c, and there will be no change in the price of these popular rubrics this season. ButT prints are shown in new and at ractive Ktyles by agents of the Washington Print works, and the American la ivy print are coining forward In a variety of choice and desirable new patterns. The Merrimack cardinal mis are in unabated demand. From Jobbers' hands therw has-been a fair distribution of fancy and shirting print, in bolh renulsr and JiO style, and otocksof the latter have been greatly reduced this week. (ilnghams. There has been a fair Jobbing traoe In staple and fancy ginghams, and dress styles are doing well in the hands of loth agents and Jobliers. Dress (Jools. There has been a moderate movement In plain worsted fabrics, and figured alpacas In matelasso efP-cts, etc., arain some cases clofly sold up to production. Black alpacas have been somewhat quiet, but prices remain steady. Plaid and striped cotton dress good of the best makes are In steady request. Hosiery has been Inactive In first hands, and liidirr.-rent styles of fancy hosier,' are In some instances offered at a concession from opening prices, though quotations on the uest makes are firmly maintained. Groceries are firm and active, with ample stocks to meet the demand. We note Increased activity In the produce market, with liberal receipts of butter, with which the market is overstocked. Eggs are steady and poultry is In ample supply. The New York market of Monday is rejorted as follows: Eggs. Receipts to-day, 2.U2 pkix. The market has made a slight turn for the better. The demand hows some increase, and with con tinued moderate arrivals and the offering of store held lots reduced, sellers gain an advantage. Where before 16c was an outside figure it may now be considered inside for fresh stock, and 17c is generally asked for strictly fine, of which the offering is scant. Duck and geese eggs are dull. The Hoard of Trade Price Current of to-day says: The reported sett ement of rates east has infused life into trade, given tone to the markets flkd a feeling ot relief to dealers. They have now a basis for reasonably safe calculations, provided rates are maintained and no private cuts are given. Under favorable circumstances we are safe in predicting for the coming summer the largest grain trade we ever had. Wheat is In active request, and prices have advanced 5c per bushel. WOOL. Tke New York Daily Bulletin of Monday says: Very positive change seems to be developed. Home few dealers have met with a fair sort of business, but the general demand failed to show a good, healthy tone of volume, and the market is not a brilliant one by any means. There does not appear to be any decided complaint among buyers at the cost of supplies, and he apparent indlfferentdemand is evidently the result of the want of use at present for larger quantities than are being handled. Some hopes are entertained of an early Increase in the production of goods, but until the necessity for this absolutely presents itself, manufacturers are not likely to handle tbe wool required. Occasional odd parcels are heard of coming to the surface In the Interior with a request for bids, and while it no point is there a full accumulation, or really much of an assortment, any ordinary order can be executed without much difficulty on either fine or coarse wools. Advices from California Indicate that a pretty i'vely business has been done in the spring clip at prices ranging from 15c up to 23c, and the trade here are somewhat nonplussed to understand upon what basis these rates have leeu paid. Late accounts, however, seem to show that matters have toned down somewhat, and that operations are being conducted with greater caution. The transactions reported here during the week embrace 2O,Oi0 lbs XX Ohio at 44c; 15,000 lbs X do, 4(c; ),0X) lbs fine unwashed. 7.000 lbs fine delaine. 2JKJ0 lbs washed Ohio delaine, 2,500 lbs coarse Ohio combing. 1,500 lbs Connecticut combing, 6 bags super pulled. baes combing do, 10 bags extra do, 25 bags No. 1 do, 13,1X10 lbs fine Texas, 8,000 Its scoured Texas, 15,000 lbs Kastern Texas, 4,i00 lbs do, 11.00. lbs Western do, 14,000 lbs do, 6,000 lbs pulled California, ao.000 ls fallendfornia, Öo.OoO lb9 srrlnir do on private terms; 1000 lbs fall do, 14c; 206 bales do do, 1417c; 5,00 lbs do do choice, 2:ic; 52 bales spring do, slightly burry, 24c; 4,000 lbs Oregon, 27c; 134 bales Donskol on private terms; and 10 tons brown cow's hair at 2c. The general merchandise markets are giving evidence that the spring trade Is fairly ander way, and the outlook Is cheering for an average business. In provisions we note a strong market with a limited demand. Advices from other points are encouraging for holders and remunerative values are looked for. The New York Dally Bulletin of Thursday says: On the general market for the hog product business has continued slow and void of exciting features, with the line of fluctuations in prices comparatively small. Yet ou the whole the sale of actual goods in a quiet way has p-ade some increase; values In ail cases nave been sustained, with a few showing asmall advance, and most of the regular dealers seem to feel in a slightly more cheerful mood. This tone does not cover expectations of any material buoyancy, Indeed rather looks upon such a result s likely to prove detrimental to the bust interests of the market but is hasfd on the theory that actions of buyers indicate a fair di-position to operate at current values or approxiraa.iug figures, and cau be encouraged if met in a liberal spirit. Exporters, to be sure, have continued to coic.plain o a want of margin, and were certainly moving with caution, but have become purchasers on very moderate fractional e ncestdons, and are believed to hold a pretty good line of orders for the incoming mot tb. Lard early In the week was a little unsettled, but toward the close the disposition was to hold it Urralr, and values made small fractional gains. For immediate delivery there has been a better business than last week, the demand com ug In part from refiners, but also covering a call from buyers who evidently required the stock to satisfy maturing liabilities. 1 he offering to meet the wants of the raartet was not a lirga one, but there was. on the other hand, no actual scarcity, and while prices naturally st'Cenrd somewhat, It was difficult to exceed 9u on prime steam. In groceries we note a fair Jobbing demand The New York Dally Bulletin of Tuesday refers to sugars and coffees as follows: Rio coffee has been dull and declining and oses merely nominal in the absence of business at Id lo 20c gold for ordinary to prime cargoes. The advices from Itlo Janeiro reporting an Increasing supply and declining prices there hsve exerusl a depressing influence here, and the . protracted dullness has added somethiniz like demoralisation.
