The New York Dally Bulletin reviews the market tut follows: The business of the day has exhibited a lit tie more animation, both In cotton and woolen productions, imnim manufacturers' amenta, ltliougi the demand to either from first hand a a by no means active. It appears tt at the packers are growing more averse each year to giving their report. and the recent decline in provisionscredited to operations In our market has not SMdMted matters materially. Of the principal eitlen, Chicago, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Milwaukee aud Louisville have made full and oomi4ete returns; Kt. Louis Uextreiely back ward, and It ia aoubtfol if anything like asatt'd'aotory report can be obtained from the 'Fntare Ureal City during tne present se&aon. It is stated on good authority that the maot Ity the packers positively refuse to make nT f poHiif ihlr biitln , either a- to the amber hogs packed, the average weight or lite totd ot the lard. Cleveland will probably report nothing but the number o' hogs ruckea, and the probabilities are that the
compilers of Ihe packing of the west will bnvj to estimate the business t tannic ted at Dc i;que and fiaena,w here the packen appear to
nave no prhie in exntnitii g tneir snare oi ine business Interests of their respective cities. It appeals surprising that, the packers of other cities will Dot profit by the example set them by the packers of Chicago. Here, full and complete leturnsof the number of hogs packed, tne amount oi product made, ana stocks on hand are regular. y given to the public. It is a standing advertisement for the Provision trade of this city, and there Is no information more eagerly sought for by the trade of this country and Kurope than that aoove referred to. It tends to increase tne business of the provision trade, by attracting o detsfor large amounts of product to a mart where they can bo readily aud satisfactorily tilled. This ia the secret of theaucceaaof our traue, and more than any one thing eis accob uts for the enormous number of 2,lt-3,-lsti hoesbeine packed in tili city during the, 12 months ending Marcli 1, 1S77, aainHi 2,3-'0,Si during the previous 12 months an lut-rcae of 612,040, being larger than the segregate packing ot any western city uunng tne same time, except that of Cincinnati tne entire packing of the former Torkopollsof the went only excelling the increase in the packing of Chicago by 17,100 hogs. The New York Dally Bulletin of Wednesday says : On the general market for the hog product businesM has been quite slow and somewhat unwitlsfa- lory, with a dearth of luterestlng features on even the leading articles. The tendency of values uasl'een rather reactionary against tho material break of the preceding Meek, but at no time positively buoyant; the actual ga n made on the recovery Is Insignificant, and while a portion of the trade are unquest ionab'y more hopeful, the evidences of a liealihy restoration of confidence are as yet lacking. Specnlators are not plenty, ana those moving fail to take hold wilb that spirit which would Indicate a firm belief that the product has attractive elements aa an article lor Investment, while most chauges in values on the various options have appeared to be the result merely of sympathetic fluctuation with the changes telegraphed from the west, shippers have continued to flfcuro to some extent on supplies but both the foreign and domestic consums live demands have proven true to the precedents of the entire season, and with eacn successive addition to cost there was a perceptible diminution of Inquiry, which at times has left the market In a very dull condition, to what extent and for what period buyeis can and will adhere to this hand-to-mouth policy is an enigma, of course, but it is through somewhat costly experience that nany operators are now willing to admit the fallacy of attempting to combat it by other than the most attractive terms. To And out about what such terms may tw, therefore, now seems the careful study of those interested, and while a portion are hopeful a revival oi demand is not tar distant, ot hers express the belief that a further pruning on price must take place before a reassuring movement of goods can set In. Lard, considering its prominence as a speculative article, has proven remarkably free from exciting feature, and generally dull. Indeed, crude lard was quite neglected frequently, with some little, difficulty experienced in fully stbllshing value for want of a basis of actual sales. It-liners were not wanting thi class of stock at the price, exporters either could not or would not handle it, aud there was no special attraction to purchase fr speculative use. Values have hardened about f .c per Ik, rather more through holders asking the' advance, in sympathy with contracts, and refusing to nifor stock, than because they wen bid up by operators in quest of suppllea. City lard lias done verv well, the prime selling rap idly and close up to the value of Western, -, j r . . r . i . . , wuue K)wfi p was muue ui imnk in nie vo. i at about Vc, with lio later offering at the rute K-ifliiexl ha shown a ü .-elded falling offin the number of sales to the continent. This Is In part due to the filling of the most important orders laat week, which eivea shippers a very good sui-ply lor some lit tie time, but mainly to the lncrea-e of v.lue In natural sequence of addition to cost on the crude article. Atarnul lOo the uemand deadened, and has Dot since amounted o much. South American ord rs moderately plenty, and for th? West ladles f ere has been a veiy good trade, though understood to be at quite low tange of prices, 'I lie market on options nas not arrorueu an opportu .ity for a very lanre line of brokereee. as operators were scarce nd tlio-e In attend ance rather inclined to take lima ot tne mark et in a very cautious gingerly fashion. In spiration, loo came mainl from the west, and the market here has been very sensitive to every change telegraphed. Values have ad vanced a fraction ov-rlast week, but it was up-hill work to obtain the advantage, a"d it was türmt r snown to ne nca Dy a very sugni tenure, on the lest indication of an ud verse character. Jn bilef, operations on the specula tive line do no, take sufucentlv positive char acter to attract outside element, and trading ror the present is unsatisiactory. FORElGJf EXPORTS OF PROVLSIONH. There has been a fair business in Bal tlmore, mostly on the account of New York parties. The advices from Itio Janeiro have not positively favored either buyers or sellers, some advance in the prioes being neutralized by Increased receipts, but In London there has been a favorable market, with an advance of Is. The regular monthly ae of the Netherlands Trading company occurs th s week, and the event la awaited with not a little Interest. A pretty good business in mild gradea has been done at steady prioes, the recent rather large arrivals having no unfavorable eflect on the market, owing to the tact of their having been previously sold. The Cuban advices have reported a dull or declining market at all the shipping ports. Refiners continue to Import on their own account, and their product is stea lily falling In value. The sugar market as a mailer of fact hai at present anything bnt a ' cheerful aspect. Ii .med baa declined to llfötlc for hard grades. with a moderate trade.
