Thousand of wolves are killed every winter in the great basin of the Yellowstone, there being a ready cash market for the robes at all the frontier trading posts. whole troupe were bagged by the police and held. There is said to be a better feeling among Holyoke, Massachusetts, manufacturers than at any time Ik? fore in three years. The patier business, which is the largest interest, has become quite brisk. About the only exception to the generally better feeling is the silk trade, which is very low. Union Square in New York city has changed in appearance greatly within a few years. For months the elefrrant mansion of ianiel Drew has stood solitary and alone there. The palaces of millionaires that were once its companions have been pulled down, and warehouses of trade and merchandise now stand upon the ground. The authorities at Washington, havinggot wind of some extensive smuggling oparations at St. Albans, Yt.. have stationed several detectives there, and the capture ot a large gang of smugglers is said to be exjected; tnt, as the local papers have given particulars of the trap, the smugglers would be first-class idiots to walk into it. The grand jury of Anderson county, Bouth Carolina, has made a presentment against ex-Oov. I). If. Chamberlain for slandering the good name of the county in an anteelection proclamation declaring and, as the grand jury declares contrary to the facta that a state of lawlessness existed within that county, which called for the intervention of the armed power of the United States. THE STATE. The semi-centennial of Methodism in Fort Wayne will shortly be celebrated. Fort Wayne Sentinel: The scramble for the post olhce has begun in good earnest. A couple of small bo3s fired a stable belonging to Mr. Henry Perrcttc, of Mooresville, Sunday, in order to frighten an old hen eft" her nest. They succeeded and also burnt the stable. Bloomfield News: Capitalists are investigating the coal and ore resources of Green connty. It is reported that when the railroad "is completed parties will oin the coal veins, ore beds and stone quarries along the line. There was a lively spelling match in the opera house at Kokonio on Saturday night between Howard and Henry Creek township. The match commenced at 8 o'clock and continued until half-past 11, and finally the match was decided a draw. Over 2,000 tombstones, to be placed over the graves of the federal boldiers in the national cemetery in New Albany, have been received at the government depot at Jeffersonville. The work of placing them in the cemetery will be commenced next week. On last Tuesday morning a young colored woman named Eliza Henderson, living near Orandview, gave birth to a child, after which she tied a string around its neck and choked it to death and took it out in the woods and left it, where a gentleman found it the next morning. Terre Haute Express: A rolored boy tel ling of the Hammond meeting the other night, said that he went to hear the sermon, but did not get there very early and didn't hear it. "isut, said he, "Mr. Hammond told lots of stories." The boy didn't know that they constitute the sermon. Michigan City News: The annexation of of the prison grounds and other grounds ad jacent thereto, as proposed, would arid to the taxable property of the city from $70,00) to $100,000. The increase resulting from the completion of the upier harbor would be about $."0Ü,00O. Comment is unneces sary. New Albany comespondeHt of the Louisville News: Purveys were made Saturday for a new reservoir for the water works. The proposed new reservoir is to be as larce as both the present reservoirs, is to be built unde r ground, will be 24 feet deep, and will be uf-ea to supply Jeriernvule with water. Jeflersonville correspondent Louisville Courier-Journal : The trial of John C. Prather, charged with poisoning his wife. w:ll be concluded at Urownstown to-day The pra-ecuting attorney made the closing argument yesterday, and the attorney for the defense w ill close the case to-day. The general opinion seems to be that Prather will be acjBitted. Fort Wayne Sentinel: Last night there Has a serious break at the feeder dam, four and a lialf milex northeast of the city. This morning about eight feit of the new guard bank, built last mrnnier, was found to be wasnea out. anu the water was jouring through with great vtjocity. IJeiore noon the break was 50 feet wide and constantly increasing. The middle of the old dam has also settled several feet. The water in the canal is rapidly falling ami in few hours will have vanished, leaving the city wholly without any supply of water. The dam was rebuilt last summer at an expense of $10,000. It will be some time before the breakcan be repaired.
