The Chief Bookkeeper of the Singer . Manufacturing Company Embezzles Over $15,000. Vint's Narr.e Enrolled on the List Great Criminals H s Arreit Yesterday Afternoon. of Mr. Richard Vint, for the -ti-t four Year bead book-keeper and ca--hier of the Singer manufacturing comany nt this .lace, va. arrested at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon by Captains O" Haver and Murphy, on a charge of embez.l?nK ihe company's funds. The amount which he 's ohared with having appropriated to his own use is $15,000, and perhaps more. Vint wvi arrested at his residence, No. XV West New York street. A few minutes after Vint was locked up, a Sentinel reporter visited him in Iiis cell at the Central elation, for the purpose of interviewing him on the subject. To the reorter'.s inquiries Mr. Vint replied: "it is a very painful subject, and I can not and will not anwer any questions." He spoke with difficulty, evidently great ly overeome by his fadings and the probable ym4ejuencei of his crime. LOOKING KOK THK ACTS. From the station house the reporter visited the residence of Mr. YV. 1. McLain, former manager of the ofiice, Mr. McLain came to the door, and the reporter immediately made known his business and asked Mr. McLain what he knew about tue embezzlement. Mr. McLain 1 know nothing, and will make no statements. It is a matter that we did not want made public, but Mr. Vint will probably tell you about it in the morning. Reporter It is now a matter of record In the court", and it not be kept a secret. Mr. Mcl-'iin What is mi record? Reporter The arrert of Mr. Vint for the embezzlement. Mr. MeLtin apfared thunderstruck at this, and wanted to know why Mr. Vint bad been arrested on such a charm. When informed of the amount he was still more astonished. He had supposed the reporter was inquiring about the '?"0 embezzlement of young Roach, who decamped a few day; a'.j. Mr. McLain stated that he (McLain) had resigned Lift week, and that Mr. Jacob Fox, of Laporte, , ha! been appointed as his successor. 1 he com fan) has reduced the otlice at this rom the the standard of the tncral of the state to a local office, with place office headquarters at Chicago. OVKKHACU.N-. THK KOOI.5. Mr. (J. R. Bacon, the irencral in.-p dor of offices of the company, as been here about three weeks overlooking the books- and accounts. The former erubezif ruent, together with the presence of Mr. I'aton, has caused a hum among the employe?, as they feared that any little irregularity in their accounts would cause their discharge by the new management. .Saturday night Mr. Foxgave Mr. Vint notice "that for the present his services would not be required, and that was the fiit intimation the other employes had of the object of the investigation. The warrant for the arrc-t of Vint waj Ls&ued at the instance of Mr. Futon Friday, but the arrest was postponed until testcruay. When the officers arrived at the residence of Mr. Vint, and made known the object of their visit, Vint appeared prepared for it, and called his family in to bid them good bye. He was undoubtedly expecting something of the kind, and making preparations to leave town, for while the onicer was reading the warrant, Vint said: "Captain, you can't serve a warrant on Sunday, can you?" 'aptain O'Haver replied: "I ran eerve a state warrant whenever I can flnd my num." Vint ade no further remark, but hi? wife threw cer arms about Lis neck and clung to him. sobbing and trembling violently. he bade him farewell over and over again, and nearly fainted when the officers aid the interview must cea.-e. AN OPEN CON NCSS ION. Captain O' 1 fa ver states that on the way to the Central station Vint admitted the embezzlement, saying that he had taken the money in small sums and that he should waive preliminary examination and enter a plea of guilty. Vint is an Englishman, and came to this city from Cunada in 172 to accept the trust he has betrayed. The position was given him by the general office manager, he having been there when ir. McLain took charge of the office in September of the sunie year. He his been married twice, and has three children, the eldest of whom is about 16 or H years of age. They are all the children of bis ilrst wife, who was a sister of hia present wife. He. wax last married about a year and a half ago. Since bis marriage he has fitted up his residence in elegant style, and some of the money has undoubtedly been devoted to this purpose, but he has always been very extravagant in his personal habits, having made daily practice of indulging in numerous "brandies'' at 50 cent a glass. PEESONAX ArTKARANCE. .Vint is about 45 years of age. of medium hight, and very heavy build. He has a "ery dark complexion, black whiskers, and was nip posed to only shave his chin, but the facts go to prove that he has been shuving the company. At present the defalcation a shown only foots up to a little over il.i.noo. but further investigation may make it more. Mr. McLain states that he always had the utxiost confidence in Vint, but "now he will not know whom to trust. The cast wiil cone up before the mayor thh morning. MIOKDI5C MI. FOX. last evening a Sentinel reporter called on Mr. Jacob Fox, the recently appointed afiit of the company at thii point. Mr. For. stated the investigation of the accounts woild not be completed for several days yer, and until then the details of the embezzlement would be withheld from the public. In answer to an inoniry he uid that the former agent, Mr. McLain, war m nowise implicated in the defalcation. He intimated that important developments would be made in a few days, but that for the present he must refrain from giving parties Jars. Vhileatthe station hoa-e at 2 o'clock thisniorning, a Sentinel reporter made anothir call on Vint, trusting that he miht hav grown more kindly disposed toward the interviewing process by confinement, bat when a.-Wed to nnbotom himself he "betged to be e .reused," and the reporter! gav him up a a tough caw.
