THE INDIAXA STASTE SENTTXKL, WEDNESDAY MORNING, FEBRUARY 7, 1877

INTER-COUNTY WAR.

The County Seat Difficulty Between Brazil and Bowling Green. .Sentinel Representative Interview Clay Cennty on the Kubjeet of Ktauw Death. Special to the Sentinel. livvLiXG f iEEEJT, Jan. 31. At this pla.'e I find the excitement to be intense over the removal of the county seat and, as they say, consequent death of James Shaw. Humors of his team being followed by three susfiicious horsemen, who were seen to furiousy ride up and dismount when he was thrown from the buggy, and to immediately remount as soon a they found him dead and ride as furiously in the direction from which they came are, circulated and believed to a certain extent. It was ascertained that Mr. Herr, who accompanied him. came up lei n rely and would pay no apparent attention to him beyond taking possession of his (Sbaw's) revolver, apjcarini: to care nrich more for his own comfort, and also that be. so far from beinjr bruised, had not even dirt on his clothes. Others ar iue that it was impossible for them to hate been so long (four or live hours) in driving from Bowling Green to Clay City, which is only 10 miles, and more espec ially as he had driven from Brazil to Howling Green. 11 miles in about two or three hour?. Mr. Shaw was nndoubtedly seen to have considerable money on his person during the afternoon, but only eight cents were found on his body. a trchtek's Ol'I.MOS. 1. A. Elkin, trustee of Washington townshin, in which Bowling Green is situated, desires to be put upon record as follows: Mv opinion is that we will get the court houw back. The action of the commissioners wm wholly illegal, and I have ihe proofs. There was no disposition to tight outhe question of removal except on the part of Brazilians. When they came to move the record they were armed to the teeth. There is great excitement over this question In the southern part of the county. I believe that Shaw was foully dealt with, and I have my reasons. The above may be perhaps taken as a fair sample of the views expressed and stories told by the extreme men of this plaf,e, but the following, from one of Rowling Green's most respected citizens, may be taken as a fair statement of their side of the light. Tire copy of the affidavit is furnished by Major Carter, a leading attorney, and the one who drew the original. He says it may vary in a few unimportant particulars.as it is drawn fpm recollection, but. in the main be vouches for its correctness, THE CASl s BELM. For the last seven years, ever since Wit, there has been grct excitement over the relocution of the county seat, and a great deal of had feeling has been engendered. It lias been lawed almost continuously in every eourt we could get it into ever since they rir.-t presented their petitions, including three trips to the supreme court. It bus always been to the interest of each side to try and control tle board of county commissioners and the county auditor, who is -oß-io their clerk, with power to call special meetings, as ujon their action would depend the removal of the court house. Mr. Shaw was elected as a Brazil man. but alter being elected he bought a house here and removed here with his family. On the atli day of August 1S70. the commissioners we recalled together in special seesion. for the purpose of lettir.e the building of the new court house and jail at Brazil. They were, however, detained until a late hour by the argument of opposing counsel, and finally adjourned until the next morning without letting. During the evening they found that they must let that day as advertised, or not at ail, and so got together, called in Mr. fehaw, and privately transacted the business of letting the building of said buildings at a frivate house and at a late Lour, as apjears y his affidavit. SHAW's OKFENSE. The atTidavit of James Shaw is substantially as follows: That he is, and during the last year has been, auditor of Clay county, Indiaua, and as ttuch is the clerk of the loard of commission ers; that on the blh day of August last the said boanl was in extra session at the court house iu Bowling Green, met for the oarpow of open ing the sealed proposals and awarding the eoutract lor the construction of the new court house and jail at Brazil, and that at a late hour in the evening said board adjourned till 8 i elocK a. m. of the Mh day or August, without having awarded the contract ; that the memihts or the board lodged at the house of D. M. Ktillwagon, some distance from the court house; that at a late hour on the night of the ih he, said Shaw, was in the court honse yard conversing with some friends, when John it. Acfcelmire came to him and said to him that Mr. Eckert, a member of the board, desired to see him at Htillwagou's house, and that he (Shaw) went to t.ie house of Stillwagon, where he found all the members or said board : that this was late at night, and that one of tne members of the board said to him. (Shaw) that they had de termined tore-examine the bids for the court house and tail, and let the contract that night, and that the said boa id proceeded to M re-ex - amine saiu Dins, arta men and there let said contract to Mr. Keasey, of Brazil; that this was some time arter trie board bad adjourned to meet the next morning: that said board di rected him Shawl to record said letting in the record of the eighth day's proceedings, an oi wmcn ne uiu. When the Brazil men heard that Mr. Shaw had made this affidavit, which con tains nothing but the truth and not all of that, they were greatly exercised over it ana made all sorts of rough talk about it and his bondsmen, who live in Brazil, and especially John G. Ack'.emire. cursed him roundly, and on the Sunday evening that he leit on the fatal trip told him, among other things, that if he did not get that affi davit back by 10 a. m. the next day they would all go off his bond, and that his of ficial life would be short. The Brazil men probably deviled poor Shaw until he started alter the papers. I do not susneet anr di rect foul jlay, but abuse and ill treatment started him on a twenty-five mile trip after having already driven nearly all day, at a late nour. ana over rough roads, to procure mis paper. HAW'S DEATH. The following Btateroent from Mary Walt er. a young ladv who lived with Mr. Shaw. will be of interest, as showing his last inter view wita his laraily: Mr. Shaw came home about 12 or 1 o'clock sunday night and wanted some supper. Air, Herr was with hint. He laid bis revolver on the table while eating, and his wire slipped it away and hid it. When he was through supper he asked: "Belle, where In my revolver?" fche said, "I took it and hid it." He said,"! must have It." Hhe begged him not to take It, Dut ne insisted and she nnaiiv got it for him fche kissed him at the door and told him to be a a;ood boy, and told Mr. Herr to take good care oi mm. The circumstances of Shaw'a death are briefly as follows: The lines undoubtedly dropped from him, as in Mr. Ilerr's state ment, and the team ran on, he still sticking to his seat, until he got into Clay City, wbare the buggv wheel ran off the ide of a cul vert breaking the spindle and throwing him forward upon the double-trees. lie is supposed to have staid here for some distance smvtect to brumngs from the horse a legs. until they finally cleared themselves from the wreck, about the center of town.when he

discovered he was supposed to be dead, but by the time more help was called he had eome to himself and risen to his feet. lie then

asked for a hotel and walked most of the way there without help, but grew faint almost on the porch. He was taken in and put to bed and doctors called in, who pronounced his injuries slight, and said he was in no danger up to within LD minutes of his deat'.i, which occurred at y a. m. Monday. On Tuesday he was taken to Brazil and shipped to Greensburg, where his relatives reside, for interment, his wife not wanting, as she said, to have him buried near the scene of these dilhculties. JACOB IIKRK'S sToHY. Shaw and I started for (ieorte Wiltse's, near Mludleburg. about 10 p. in. Sunday. The team was a spirited one. Shaw seemed to be In a Kreat hurry and drove very fast and reckless, against my frequent protests. We got to Bowling Green a Wit midnight and got sup per. Then we started on to .Miuuienunr, ana scot about seven miles beyond Howling ( ireen, about one and a half miles from Clay City, when he tlroptied the lines and the team started on a frantic run. When we sol into Clav City the buggy was smashed to pieees and Me fell out. I fell out about half a mile before he did. When the horses began to run. I staid In until tlwv lnui nin Attont si mile, mit the llneK were down and we had no control of the team and of course cou'd do nothing. I beggt-d him nil the uv down to either drive more carefully or efse let me. When the lines dropped from his hands I was looking down lixlng the blankets and cud not see it immediately, but as soon as I saw it I threw off the blankets and reached over the dashboard tocatch them, but they had slipped uuder the horses' feet and were out oi rcacn. I said "Jim. you've dropped the lines; we 11 have no more trouble about drlvleg now." We shouted to the horses to stop, but at that time we were going down a little hill and the horses were going very fast. They started on a frantic run as soon as tuey found that they were loose, and the buggv of course surged around. On ac count of having thrown off the blankets I web tree and more tlrmly seated than he was, and as they jerked to one side I was thrown out but was not much hart. The team ran on with Shaw about half a mile farther, and when In the heart of Clay City the box of the buggy was knocked offand broken up and ait axle broken. At thai place snaw is supiaeu to nave lauen out. I got up as soon as I could. Shaw was on his feet wben I got there. By that time a number or people had eoiue out. snaw uiu notsav much; did not reply to any inquiry as to whether he was hurt, but inquired for hotel and livervstable. lie walked about two squares to the hotel, wliere lie lost all control or niinscu ana tei; uown. weraiseu him tin and carried him Into the hotel and he remained unconscious until he died. We got the doctor in shortly and they pronounced him not serlouslv hurt, and went away about h o'clock a.m. Alsmt tf he rore up and made an effort to vomit, and also a second one, ami fell back and died almost immediately. Then- wan no Kssibility of there lieing any foul plav. No one was near. I have an idea that he" was dozing when he dropped the lines. lie had been drinking, and when ho left Brazil was somewhat under the Influence of liquor. 1 do not know anything further. A HO.NUs.TIAVS STATKMENT. Mr. Acklemlre desires to einphatii-ally state that he did not tell Mr. Shaw that if he iShawt did not get the affidavit by lua.ni. Monday, he would gooff his tiond; that shaw voluntarialy said that he would produce it by that time; that he ( Acklemlre) said he (Shawl might look lor other bondsmen, without any reference as to whether the nHuiavlt was pro duced or not, but nd vlssl shaw for his own good to get It back. Mr. Acklemire further states that the copy furnished by Mr. Carter is not correct, In this, that the original suites that the letting of the buildings wa done on ttie Iii of Atigut, and not on the s: n, but further than this the statements are substantially correct. i.KXKKAL COM I.VMONS. It is hard for a disinterested party to de cide as to the correctness of the rival state ments. It is, however, established beyond dispute that the Krazilians who went after the records were a hard set, and went prepared for trouble to the extent of two 10 inch navy revolvers each, or at least a considerable part of them. Still they all disclaim any intention of having any fuss, and some even deny flat-footed the presence of arms, but the fact that they did have them is unquestionable. The first sttenient in the Sentinel was founded on a rumor, but different statements show enough alleged facts to bear it all out, except that Shaw was not probably murdered, but instead came to his death by a too free use or intoxicants. The people of Bowling Green say that the tight is not yet ended, and that thev will have the records back in the old court house inside of üö days, but say that under no circumstances will thev resort to violent measures, unless pitched into. If both sides will stay a peaceable as they talk, there will probably be no further trouble. OUR YOUNG NATURALIST. Ernest Morris A sain Writes of His Travels in South America. lie Kinds HliiiHelf Auiong Some 4'itrloit Nat as Tribe and .Make tatiue Interetlitc Kiploraf )oti. The following letter from the well known young devotee of science, Kniest Morris, will be of interest to all the readers of the Sentinel. It will be remembered that he left this city early in the fall to return to the scenes of his former adventures. The letter is addressed to his father residing here and is dated Dec. 4, 187, at Caser I,-Ijver J., Brazil, South America: The reason of ray long silence is that 1 have been pushing my way up the Tanajnise river, and now I am at the foot of the first falls, 21. miles from the mouth, waiting at the hut ot a negro trader for the return of a c.mce from the Indian vlllnite of Itaituba. In it I will embark for the far tipper river. I go to obtain the heads of the wild parrentlns pronounced parachins). These heads are severed from the body and preserved by the Munduracas, the largest tribe of Indians in Brazil fthe tribe I am amongst now). It will be Impossible for me, In a letter, to give you a description of these tattooed demons, the Mund'ir.u'HM. Of the Parachins, they are a very fx -cullarrace. They are mid to be of fine and pertect form, having small and delicate features, with hair trailing on the ground. They live in holes In the ground, and subsist on wild fruits and game robbing the plantations. Of the seml-clvllized Muuduracas, they are called by the traders here the wild men of the Tapajolse. These heads are cleaned of the brain, then aoaked In bitter oil, then dried over a fire or in the sun. They are no larger than the head of a very amall child. Their features are Maid to tw perlect but shrunken. These hvli a-e tob- had of the chief alone. TM very difficult to get them. I have come for them. You understand what this means with me. I am almost worshipped by these Munduracas. They think a Branco (white) a god. Their language I do not understand, but there are a few or them and their chief that talk Portugese. This language I understand and talk perfectly. I will go up the river lu a loat manned by ten Indians. There are ten high fallsall of which we will have to ascend, carrying our baggage on our backs and pulling the canoe over the rapids. Above these falls no white traveler has ever been. The river has a bad name viz: Sickness and nothing to eat. I can find out nothing In regard to the upper river. I go for information and notes, as well as collections, and shall not return unless compelled by sickness. It is very sickly here now, but thus far I come and go through wet and shine and suffer nothing by it; but I am president. 1 take with me a stock of article with which to trade with the natives. If you will ret Orlln'a new book, "Kar Up the River Tapllolse," you will see a river called Tropas; up It I will go. I live well, am In splendid health, am treated well, and sure of suoce. What more could I ask ?
