THE GOLDEN MILESTONE. UJNGFELIOW.
Leaße are the trees; their purple branches Hpread themselves abroad, like reefs of coral, f Rising silent - In the Red Sea of the winter sunset. From the hundred chimneys of the village, Like the Afreet in the Arabian story. Smoky columns Tower aloft into the air of amber. At the window winks the fiirkerins: fire-light; Here and there the lamps of evening glim- - mer, Social watch-fires Answering one another through the darkness. On the beach the lighted logs are plowing, And like Ariel in the cloveu pine tree For it freedom Groans and sighs the air imprisoned in them. By the fireside the old men seated, Seeing ruined cities in the ashea, Asking sadly Of the Past what it can ne'er restore them. By the fireside there are youthful dreamers. Building castles fair, with stately stairways, Ask'ng blindly Of the Future what It caunot give them. By the fireside tragedies are acted, lu whose scenes appear two actors only, Wife and husband. And above them God the sole spectator. Bv the fireside there are pence and comfort: Wives and children, with fair, thoughtful fiictift Waiting, watching For a well-known footstep in the passage. Each man's chimney Is hin Golden Milestone; Is the central point, from wnich he measures Every distance Through the gateways of the world around him. In his farthest wanderings still he sees it : Hears the talking flame, the answering nightwind, As he heard thera When he sat with those who were, but are not. Happy he whom neither wealth nor fashion, Xor the march t the encroaching city, ' Drives an exile From the hearth of his ancestral homestead. We may build more splendid habitations. Kill our rooms with paintings and with sculptures. Silt we cnnnnt Buy wi'.u gold the old associations! Written for the Sentinel. A TEMPERANCE LECTURE. A WASHI5GT0N STREET SCENE. 'Do not buy that, Robert; have yon so soon forgotten your promise? I trusted you, Robert; trusted your honor, your word; more than that, I trusted your affection. Am I to be again the victim of disappointment?" "Now, Malinda, you just keep quiet, yet into the wagon, mind your (wn business, and let me alone; I'm not to be bulldozed any more. I wa? only going to buy a quart; not enough to hurt anybody." "No, Robert Chandler. I shall not get into the wagon, but I shall mind my own - KnoinAM Ann wrtnl T?nht4rt" mmii this way," and they walked around behind the wagon. . . Mrs. Chandler wrapped the shawl more closely around an infant in 'her arms, for the wind was chilly and the ground was covered with snow. Her clothes were scanty for the season, and on her pensive face were marks of care, sorrow and anx iety. "One word, Robert Do you remember your marriage tow? Do you . remember what you promised ma when she said that jou might take her daughter away from some and the friends of her youth? Ah, you do remember, Robert. But you have troken your promises to me and to ma and to your God. Do you remember Minnie, Robert? our angel baby, our first born? do not want to pierce .your heart with too many thorns, Robert; but I must talk to you now, for unless you change your purpose we shall say good-bye forever, When you kissed Minnie for the last time you made a promise do you remember that? I know you do; it is engraven on your memory, Robert, and when we went with her alone almost, to the little grave, did you not then .again say you would drink no more? Now look upon Eddie, sleeping in my arms. He is poorly clad. I do not complain about myself, Robert, but I am delicate and cold. You have but little money; why spend it for whisky? Why carry it to our already poverty stricken home? Why make home more sorrowful and life more haggard? Now, Robert, it is time for you to go. Is it still your deter mi nation to buy the-whisky? You hesitate. Has the. demon so' tight a grasp upon you? Does it make you forget home and fceaven, wife and child? Still you hesitate. Well, here is my hand, Robert. The cold world ii before me and Eddie, but l preter it to .borne wita you under the influence of the demon.. I love joa still, and when I m -dying I will offer -a prayer for you; but to go iiome agaia with r the dread of such scenes ae have made me ptematurely old "never, no never! and - then the pest np emotions 'broke over all re i et rant, and the frail woma shook like a rieed in a storn. Such a scene was never be'iore witnessed on Washington street. Robert ' tocdas if paralyzed ; his manly chest was con--rulaed with emotion that prevented speech Ills life passed before him in an instant, ev ery scene as vivid as if painted with fire. Then he reached forth his hand, and catching Iiis wife's arm as she was passing, held her as if iu a vice: "Vo, Malinda; no," no; do not go. Do you soe this jug? ; I just bought -it I wa going ta fill it with whisky and ; take it heme. Do you see it?" Then he , dashed it. , onto , the ' ici,t nd It was shivered into a thousand fragments, ;- "No, by all that ia sacred -uietuoiy of Minnie, promise to yoar mother, marriage tows, all I 111 ; buy .no? more whisky, Malinda. I will bring the roses to your cheek again, Malinda. I will make our cot tage a palace of love ana contentment I will be a man. Then the words choked him acd he drew his rough sleeve over his cheeks where tears were falling like rain. Malinda stood with her face radiant with joy, and though a number , of idlers Lad gathered around, Robert and Malinda ia the rapture of happiness were all uncon
scious of surroundings, and thus on a win
try day, beneath murky clounds, their new ife was commenced with a kus. toon all were aboard and homeward bound. The witnesses of the scene lingered a while. Bob Toper said, "I'd not be bulldozed tnat way by a woman." "No." .said a little boot black, "that's what my dad said, and now he's troubled with snakes in his boots, and my mother has had nothing to eat all day." Jim Whipple, who had large drinking capacity, which lie generally im proved, ouicklr remarked, "This show has been worth a thousand dollars to me and a greai deal more to my poor family. You bet there'll be more bread and meat and potatoes in my shanty after this. I too will break the iues and thank God that some good angel led me on to Washington street to-dav." We thought Malinda '.alked well, and turned away persuaded that for a temperance lecture quiet words of affection will win when scolding complaints will ouJy make matters worse. . TIIE STATE. Morton Machination. Indianapolis Special to the Courier-Jou mal. It has leaked out to-night that Senator Morton telegraphed to one of his henchmen here to get resolutions through the republi can caucus, Friday night, epposing the senate and house committee's plan to count the electoral vtes, and indorsing him. It was supposed that the caucus consisted only of the republican members of the legis lature, but it has since transpired that a number of Morton's friends were present, who are not members of the general assem bly, who did earnest talking in the senator's De hair. In proof of this it win he remeni bered that the telegram informing Morton of the action of the caucus was signed "E. W. Halford, secretary." Mr. Halford is the managing editor of . the Indianapolis Journal, Mr. Morton s organ and mouth-piece. When the telegiam reached Washington City, Morton gave it to the press agent at that point, and it was sent broadcast over the country for the purpose oi conveying the impression that the republicans of Indiana. through their representatives, opposed a peaceful solution of the presidential difficulties, and indorsed the sanguinary action of the great war governor. 1 he enort is macre to keep the matter within the family circle, but it is known to-night that several prominent republican representatives are dissatisfied with the cut and dried work of the caucus, and will introduce a resolution in a few days favoring the compromise. ask. the re covered dys pep kilfilU Ü tics, Bilious sufferers. victims of Fever and Ague, the mercurial diseased patient how theyrecovered health cheerful spirits and good appetitite, they will tell you ytak ing Slmmons's Liver Regulator. CATARRH.
12 YEARS OF SUFFERING ! Gentlemen About 12 years ago.while travel ing with Father Kemp's Old Folks Concert Troupe as a tenor singer, I took a severe cold and was laid np at ewarK, n. J. mis com brought on a severe attack of Catarrh, which I battled with every known remedy for four weeks without avail, and was finally obliged to give up a most desirable position and return home unable to Ring a note. For three years afterwards I was unable to sing at all. 1 he first attack ol Catarrh had left my nasal organ and throat so sensitive that the slightest cold would bring on a fresh attack, leaving me prostrated. In this way I continued to suffer. The last attack, the eeverent I ever hod, was terrible. I suffered the most excruciating pain In my head, was no hoarse as to be scareel? able to speak, and coughed incessantly. I thought I was going into quicK consumption, and I firmly believe ihsit had these symptoms continued without reJief they would have rendered me an easy victim. When in this distressing condition, I commenced the use of Hanford s Kadicai cureror catarrii, very reluctantly, I confess, as I had tried ail the advertised remedien without benetit. The first dfese of this wonderful medicine -gave me the greatest relief. It Is hardly possible for one whose head aches, eyes ache,wh can scarcely articulate distinctly on account ol the choking accumulations in the throat, to realize how much relief I obtained from the first application f SandfordV Kadicai Cure. Under its in fluence, both internal and external. I rapidly recovered, and by an occasional use of the remedy since have been entirely tree from Catarrh for the first time in Vi years.
