I'lease, tilly, get me a tree; just a littie wee tne " -ay here, Kessie; 1 want to see my papers. JCow don't you move from here, one btep even," and the boy dirted off after one of his regular patrons, who always bougüt bia morning's paper of him The little Kirt was afraid for a moment, and lcokvi frightened at being left all alone, but p.e-ently ehe was lost in a ioiiration of the beautiful gifts in the window, fche pushed tfjc faded hood from her forehead, and a tun-le of golden curls were unloosened. Her little fineers pointed out the things the most liked, while nhe chattered away to herself in iweet, childish innoeence. "Little girlie, are yott wishing (or Santa Claus?" and Mrs. Murray bent low to the chili beside her. lk'le thraok back lialf fraid, but the sweet smile reassured her. "Yes, ma'am." "What would vou like to have? Tell me all al-out it. Yet Frank, yoa can go on and I w ill stay and talk to thw Httle woman." Ikssic grew to!il'Ie at once and told her wants and wishes Iretly, reciting Billy's gifts for "toor marna." Fl)e told the lady cf her home, of 'Jbovr ofuu we o to bed hungry, and mama
cries iHN'htiHM we ore vM. Have you a little girl?" "In heaven, darling. ' "Why, that's w here my n is don't you guesj he knows your little girl? ' ami as Vlie Ktw the nwift fulliiig tears on Mrs. Murray's cheeks her lip oniered. "Why. Bessie, what re you doing? Msmu told you not to ever both r ladies lhat way.. Yon must wait until she sjiaks lo you." "T.illy. I did; he talked t me first." "Well, sty good-bye. and let mo go home with vou, for I have got to go now." "Where do you live?" "At No. 121 street. My mamma tews for ?. living; nhe will by glad to gee you. Hood morning." Mrs Murray watched the loving care with which the brother gmded Ids little sifter in the Mitoothefct path and helped her over ihe uuewH rrmwinjr . and he did not lose kight of them until the little farted t-liMwl and hood and the gray patched jucket faded in the distance. All the afternoon Billy worked bard to 11 his puperH, for man a had told him the tiickels miht be his. He was succexful, and wlien the laaf one was pine he started off todo liH shopping. He had 115 cents alibis own and he priced everything he could find to try to get two presents out of that. At lat he got a tiny littlo gray scarf for 20 tents. That was for his mot her, and I believe no gift ever brought more pleasure to tin giver. Then a little cake for two cents and a candy apple for thrt p, and he felt satisfied with theMi for Bessie. Brave, true, free hoar', no thought of himself; no thought of the red fingers, tingling with cold, but constunt recollection of the patient m'-tler and the little Mtor. lie did not feel the odd at all, but felt warm and glad, for a happy heart beat rtn!er the poor tidal) by j.irkel. He. found a branch of pine lying in the gutter, And he pi- ked it up. Khook oil the irt, and carefully holding it under bin arm he went home, slyly slipping bis gifts into the darkness of the outer hall, and then going into the room with a tell-tale face that could not conceal the ble.-ed secret of "Christmas gifts." But the mother's heart was sad, very sad, for she saw her children were trying to be joyous, and she could do nothing to aid them, and as the patched the worn garments the toars fell fast on the litti clothes. Bessie came and leaned h trait ist bor knee and - said plain lively, "Mamma, won't you please tarn my littlo red stockings. I want to bang them up. for Billy says that Hanta Claus will l-e sure to come to-night. Will he, mama?" '"No, my darling he w ill t.ot come to my litde hps to-nitrht. and will not my little girl be brave and help mama to hear the trouble that this brings her?" PiKr Bessie, she could not keep the tears hack, ami she slipped off toTy hersorrowaway in the dark, und Inn. after a while, she came to Billy's fcide she was still sobbing with grief, and she ovuld not be comforted. After she had gone to sleep her mother knelt by her and hf-cjred Ciod that the bleated Comforter might fKlace the aehiuj; hearts of her little ones. Billy j'h'iid for mama to keen her eyes shut until he had arranged his tree, and then he threw over it an old dress skirt so that DeKsie might be the first to see it in all of its beauty. To his. eyes it was erfeit, fixed the little brauch of evergreen on the table, hung the cake and candy fruit to it and festoomtl the scan N from cne twig to another and then stood back to udr.uru it. After be too was asleep, thwidow sat long by the dying fire w raped in reverie. There was barely soaht ftol in the cuplMiard. there was not enotish Miel to l:i. t another day, ami the clothing of the children was so thin they shivered at every breath of air. Her work wat. exhausted and she knew not where to pet any more; the winter would be long and bitter and she had nothing to meet its demands with. Khe was Cold and hungry ; she had divided her supper with the others for she could aland the knawingol hunger and they could not There was a light tap at the door; she was halt afraid to open it. hut she heard a wo man's voice and trusted to that. "Does little Beasie live here?" was asked bva gen th-man who stood on the step. "Yes, sir; at least my little girl's name is Bessie. Will you come in?" ''Madame, nerhaps I ouxht to make you mi apology for this intrusion. Our little girl died some months ano, and my wife w. nts to give to your children the gifts that would have been hers. Hhe talked to Besie to-day, and learned your w hereabouts, and we have taken the liberty to call. You will lind the little striped stockings the longed tor in thN buket." And before a word of thanks could be offered they were gone. . Toe huge basket was full to overflowing, but en top were the bright red stockings which Bessie had coveted so much all day. There was a suit of clothes for Billy, a warm shawl fur the widow, good shoes and over shoes, heavy gloves, sever.il dresses, toys tor the children. fMxl in abundance, orders for fuel. Gifts for Minnie were all wrapped separately, an I were a little finer than the other. Bright Hanne! drerss, fine linen aprons, delicate underwear, gay stockings, a erfect outfit; and with them was a lovely doll, dressed to please the fancy of a chih. On this package was a simple note, "These were Minnie's; let Itessie wear and enjoy them fof her sake." Quietly the happy", thankful mother slipjed the cover Irom B liy's Christmas tree, and hung all she could of the new treasures upon it. and arranging the others to make the picture as bright and beautiful as jossible. But nothing moved her as did the simple presents of her boy the cheap scarf and the trifles for his sister. She laid her moist cheek npon the soft, woolen web, and thanked God that in the midst of all her trouble she yet had this fond, faithful soul to comfort and cheer her. and then with the blessed consciousness of pleuty of food and fire, she sank into the first sweet sleep she had known for months. At the first dawning of the morning she hoard Billy slipping from the bed to uncover his precious tree ere he awakened his sister. He saw some one had distnrbed the cloth, and stoo 1 as if vexed, but in a moment bis brow cleared and deftly he threw tlx; calico a'de. ''Oh. maxaa, mama!' was bis first cry, and be darted to her. "Wake up Bessie, mama; Suta Claus has been here. See, Besie, what ycu have got!' i?uch ercluniations of joy', such shouts of rapture had never before awakened the echoes in the old house. Never were children so frantic with joy, for it seemed as though Paradise bad opned to thtui, and nothing loth they entered into its pleasures. They patted the fat turkey, won.dered at its hugeness and weight, and tried to imagine what it would taste like. They smoothed the rosy cheeked apples, gathered up tho nuU with eager bands, and tasted of the little store of candy. The mother told the tu the story of the dead child, and dwelt upon the loneliness of the home where she had been, and when quietly the little heads bowed at her knee in prayer, she asked Jeans to bless and comfort the stricken parents. ' All day they played happy and joyful, until just at dusk Billy came to his mother and whispered, "May I do something with our little tree?" "Yes. darling." "Will you let Bee and me take it over to lame Maggie? I have not eaten all my candy and nuts, and j'ou may, hang ttietn on. and I will give her my old picture book and one of my new ones, for she can't get out of bed and she is so lonesome." Several little things were tied to the tiny boughs two apples w rapped in soft pajer, and Bexsie was not satisfied unless she added her cake, and the Christmas tree was carried over to the poor lame girl, who lived with her aged, grandmother. Xler pale lace was
transformel in an instant, ana she clasped her hands in rapture when the p'ue branch was fastened to a chair at her side. She tinted the cake and candy, but the dry. feverish lips craved the moisture of the apples, and .he ate. for the first time in months, of palatable food, and then the children left her alone w ith her treasure. Mr. and Mrs. Murray came by the bouse, and fctopied for a minute's chat. The children, no longer shy, played about them, or kissed the lips that ached so for the soft, loving pressure of their loved ones. Bessie at la-it, won by smiles and kind words. Kit in the lady's lap and felt asleep in her arms, while the widow told the sad story-of her poverty, r he was promised constant cm ployiuent at better price-, and the fear of her children ever suffering was lifted from her heart. Mr. Murray fancied Billy, with his frank, generous nature, and resolved to give f lie boy a helping hand in hisefl'orts to make a living arid help his mother. 'Trank this is among the happiest Christmas days of my life; Minnie has seemed to be with mo alt day, and when little Bes-sle went to sleep in my arms I felt as if I was clasping my own child arain." "At last. Lilian, we have learned our lesson of resignation in healing o'her broken hearts we soothe our own, in lifting op the IdwwI we are ourselves up lifted." "Frank, I feel to-night as if I could trust Minnie with Jesus, as if I could wait to see her until I meet her in heaven, and from this ChrsUnas night I want to try to take no .U'p that does not lead me to her. Will you help me. my husband?" The re was a new look of ianu itn and sarr-dncia upon thesveet fac a new fit-ling- in the soft voice. Her husband paused a moment. He had never prayed audibly even before his wife, but the solemnity of the hour touched nis heart, and w ilh his arm clasping his wife, for the first time he asked God's blessing upon them, and the Christmas night faded away iuto the light of dar.
