Conimerelal. 1 Vie general merchandise markets continue ! to exhibit a good degree of animation, and the '
volume of trade is fairly mantalnd. The grain market continues quiet, owing b a want of cars to send the stocks In elevator forward to Kastem markets. Under the circumstances the price of corn Is entirely nominal, and active quotations are out of the luestion. The difference between corn In elevator fand f. o. b. is fully 4 cents, when It ougkt not to be over threefourths of a cent. How long this state of things Is to continue no one seem to have any reliable information. The provision trad" is quiet, consequent in some measure upon the reduced slocks of wlntercun-d meats. Clear rib sides are held at He, and dry salt shoulders nt e'iö'-.jc. Prime steam lard Is quiet at if'i'.d'X'. There Ls no kettle lard In the- market. The weather ls so mild and siimnier-llke that jork jswkers have little commencing business, besidehigh f per 100 pounds gross to say nlout hos are too would be ext reme figures to commence ou. Wedfrn Ho Nupply. The Kansas City Irice CnrnMit publisJtes hog returns from various localities in the West. F.ditorially summing them up, it says: The l'rh-e Current, appreciating the Imiiortanceof obtaining reliable Information in reference to the hog supply In Western Missouri, Kansas', Southeastern Nebraska and Southwestern Iowa, have In-en nt some pains to I learn the number which will la probably marketed within the next six months, how the numbers comsirt with last year, and what effect the cholera has had. We. are pleased to be able to lay these sis-cial rei'orts before our reader. this week, as well as other information In reference to hogs, which can not but prove to be of general interest. While our special reorts do nt cover every county in the localities to which reference has been made, yet there is a sufficiency to give one an idea of'the hog crop of the country tributary. In looking over these reports we And that in Western Missouri, out of fifteen counties heard from, ten indicate that the crop Is larger than last year, four less than last year, anil one about the same. As to the eUectstf the cholera, ten report it as having been destructive, one as hating experienced no cholera, and four as having done but little damage. In Kansas, out of thirty-seven counties re-, ported, twenty-eight indicate that the crop will be larger titan last year, one as less, and light as iilMtut the same. The cholera lias been very destructive in three counties, while in live it" has been mild, and in t wenty-nlm; there has laen none. The reports from Southern Nebraska show a uniform gain over last year, and but little cholera. From Southwestern Iowa, out of nine counties reported, one shows an increase over last year, six less niul two alsmt tlie same. In six counties tlie cholera has been destructiue, in one none and in two little damage has Is-cu done. It will le thus seen that from these rewrfs, which an as reliable as it is psihieto get tlx in, and from disinterested parties, k'nnsas. Western Missouri and Southeastern Nebraska's hog cron will le larger than last year, while a majority of the reorts from Southwestern Iowa show a falling oil". While the Price Current has never contended timt the hog crop of the country tributary would be enormous, yet we have always lelieved that it would" be larger than last year and a sufficiency for the demand from home packers. Our reports indicate that our judgment was correct. In groceries we rate a firm fed im; In coffees and sugars. The New York Shipping I.lst of October 25, has the following reference to the market: Unizil Coflee-We have still to report n remarkaby bare and, of necessity, a very quiet market, and these are about the only featun-s which it presents at he present moment. There is, in view of the very moderate offerings, all of low grades, and the high prices asked for the little here ami for cargoes supposed to be near at hand, a very strong feeling, anil the steamer now due, with ls.OOO bags Kio, Is looked for with no Utile interest. Our quotation are well supported but somewhat nominal, the sales by the steamer being expected to place our market on a mure .satis factorv position ais regards market values. The llelle of Devon, via Lisbon, with 3W bags Santos, arrived Friday evening, and the only transaction is the disposal of her cargo yesterdav to a dealer at 17.'c gold for the sound ami tobe made sound, with certain conditions as to a reasonable time for delivery, It being understood that a portion of her cargo was damaged, and may have to pass through the hands ttf the underwriters. Tlie jobbing demand is good, but the business is light, owing to the small and poor assortment of our dealer, the good and better qualities, which are most wanted, not Is-lug lit stock. Prices are well supported, the range of extremes being as before, snv lfi'.'.fj)1- for Kio and l&JWe for Santos. Tlie deliveries for home use from this port and ISaltimore continue pretty large, these being tlie only points, except Ualveston, from which to draw supplies. Messrs. Phlpps & Co.'m regular Kio telegram, usually to hand Mondays, ha not arrived, and the market is without the lteneflt of a week's later advices The stock of I5raz.il In the Brooklyn warehouse yesterday wa 44,;" bags, of which 1.97s In first and 4J,tjiiu second hands. Jobbing lots, ordinary to choiee.l fi20 cents. : The New York Bulletin of the same date ns above has the following in cTmnect Ion with refined sugar, which helps to account for the activity inthat product: A trade feature of no little imiHrtance of late lias been the activity of exports of refined sugar. The business with Canada hnsls'en brisk, but this has not the significance which ult indies to a sudden ami large demand from Kurland conswquent upon the crisis In the F.nstern question. During September, and up to within a wee It , t here was no sugar whatever vent to Kngland, and, in fact, lor threee months oast the trade in that direction was trilling. Within a few days, however, there have been purchases liere for Kngland of 8.000 barrels or over, and the demand continue. Prices are in consequence of this, and a brisk tnule from other sources, very firm at an advance. It is said that the production of some of the refineries of which we ha ve abont twenty here is being reduced so as to assist the rise in prices. Wool. We have no chance to note In our wool quotations, in fact it is very dltticult to obtain c.-.-rect quotations. The New York marker, Ls reported as follows by the Daily Bulletin: During the past Wi-ek there lias been a core r-iderable movement In domestic wools, and at full prices, with the strength of tone well preserved on all grades, and buyers finding It almost useless to bid, except upon a basin of extretae figures. Manufacturers, projver, are probably the smallest and most eautlous operators. financial disiblllt ! In some Instances preventing them from taking hold freely, though, at the best, not many can bring themselves to lelleve that it ls policy to handle supplies with freedom until the market for goods assumes a more positive and encouraging shape. Dealers, however, by their acts, appear to Indorse their faith, and have taken a good amount of stock here and at other seaboard point of distribution, and we are also informed that a numlier ot operators nre continuously busy In the country picking up desirable parcels. The belief is in a good full business during the winter and spring, and much confidence is expressed in the ability fc ultimately bring consumers well unto the advanced cost now askd on most f trie leading styles. Kleeoes have been sought after, and the movement ob lr checked by tin cost. Both California and T.-xan wools sold well, and fhe attractive assortment lit much broken.
