It ATT I. K AH AllltOAO. RElHIRTKlt The True Situation In Indian from un Independent KtamlpolnvIndianapolis Corr"pnden-e of the J-.'hiladd-phla limes.! Indiana..';. Sept. 21. In all the ihiaign, whether they are iolitu-al or jinlitxT a single buttle usually lesidcs the rcsulv The xliticul campaign of 17 will lo no xceptioii to tins rule, as it will le virtnallv leciled bv the October elections in Ohio and ndiana. This proiosition lH iwggr.uited.it i no wonder that the tw great jmrties of the country arc making every imjsiI,1c effort to carry Indiana. The Democracy is ietter rg;iiiiz'l than ever In-fore. Tilden and Hendricks clubs have lecii formed in nearly every ward f our cities. and in most of the townships of the state. A ireful enrollment of the voters in a large numlH-r of the counties has been made, and the work is ln ing rapidly prosecuted in the remaining one. !n eight or ten lays from now the lH-inocratic State Central Committee will Ik; in jsissessioii of a m II all the -voters in the state. Tlose counties which have already rorted show an increased Democratic vote over that of 18 2, w hen Hendricks was cle-ted governor by about one thousand ma jority. In the northern a!t of the state our ;ains line 1mi ii large in most of the counties, " a and in tin- remaining ones our losses ate small. In the southern counties our luirty is not in asgood condition as in the northern nes. This lMirtion of the state is largely Democratic, but in several counties our or ganization i defect i ve, and the Democratic masses have not Ik'cii aroused. c ial attention will at once be given these counties, and la-fore the election fakes place it is ex-Ix-cted that tlie IHmocratic camp nrcs will burning as brightly in the southern belt of the state as they are in the central ami northern ones. In 1872 Indiana cle ted eight Democrat, to Congress and five Kcpublii-an. This was ac complished in spite of an infamous npiir-tiohiut-nt of the state by a Kepubliean legislature, which was designel to secure the return of ten Iiepuhlican and thri'e Democrats, lint in fixing up the districts the llepubliians averreached themselves and created too small margins in several of them to insure success for their party. In the groundswell of 174 the cople placed their condemnation Un the gerrymander by electing a majority of Democrats to the national c ingress. We cannot Iiojk- to do as well in 1871 as we did in 174, but we have a good chance of electing a majority f congressmen in the state. I will six-ak f the doubt ful districts ami their -andidates in the order of their number. In the fourth district, now represented by Judge Xcw, the Denncratic candidate, is Dr. L. J. Woollen, of Switzerland county. Dr. Woollen is not a jxiliticiati, and was never a candidate for ollice before. He is a good canvasser, a fair stum--, and has great jktsoikiI jKipularity. He is making an active and, it i la-Iu'vcd. efficient canvass. His competitor is Leonidas Sexton, nw lieutenant-governor of the state. Gen. F.rowne's majority in the ditrict four years ygo over Gov. Hendricks was 7l. It is lleiieved that Dr. Woollen will overcome this majority and be elected. At present his prospects to do so are certainly very gots!. In the Fifth District the candidates an Judge Holman and General Tom l.rowne, who was lK-aten for (Jovernor in 172 by Governor Hendricks. Judge, Hoi man has a national reputation. He is one f the oldest members of Congress, and is noted for his consistent opioitioii to all kinds f rings and all manner of jobs. Our legislature has three times changed his district for the purpose of preventing him from leing elected, but each time he was returne! by an ii crcased majority. The district is Republican by a large majority, yet it is believed that his chance for siui-ess are gnl. His com-H-titr, General Drow ne, is an able aim lular man. but he is no match for Holman a a canvasser. The result in this district is doubtful, with the chances in favor of Judge Holman. Lander t'ishl. In the seventh, or IinlianajH.lis district, the candidates are Franklin Imders, Democrat ami present in-titnlcnt, and John Manna, Republican. Mr. lenders resides in this city, ami is extensively engaged in the jiacking of higs. He is a man of much natural ability, of indomitable energy and pluck, and of uiniuestioiied integrity. He was elected two years ago by a majority f over six hundred, and in that race he receive! the votes of the (Jrcenbackers as well as the Democrats. His course in Congress has Ik-cii such a to attract the notice f the whole cuntry on account of the iersistency and ability with which he has alvK-ated the greenback dK-trines. It was .supposed that he Wils greenback enough to satisfy the most ultra inflationist, but it seems he was not. Mr. James Buchanan of thii city, known in the West as "The Plan." having; an itching for -ongressional honors, procured his own nomination bv.the Imlejcudcnt.s, and is making an active canvass of,a the listrict. As most of the- votes he will rrCcive would otherwise 1 rat for LanderH it is feared that the latter will be defeated. This is not by any moans certain, however, for on a careful estimate of the votes of the district it is found that Iinlors will come into this county (Marion) neek-and-mtk with Mr. Hanna. So it will be perceived that the result leends upon this county. Two years nro Mr. lenders carried it by over Too majority, and w ill carry it again if we have an honest ami fair election. If we can prevent negro ininrtations and relating on election-day we shall carry Marion county, elect Mr. Lander and secure a majority of the Legislature. I am not sanguine that this can lie done, for the Republicans have eon t ml f the election boards; they also have the city Mlice, every incmber of w hich will do a full day's work 011 the Hull dav of next month in getting Itailical tickets into the ballot-lmxes. Kvery precaution that is jossib!e w ill In- taken by the Democracy to prevent any frauds upon the jele at the ensuing election, but whether their efforts will be successful I will be iH'tter able to inform yu when the election is over. The only other doubtful listrict is the Eighth or Terre Haute district. As I s'mke of this district in a former letter I w ill say nothing more than to observe that recent information Continus me in the opinion I then expressed, that . Mclx-an, the Ik-mocratic candidate, will be elected. tentorial Comment. We give to-day another letter from our Indiana correspondent on the Democratic Hide. It is written with as little jartisan bias, apparently as is jssible for any one to exercise in the present -outest of unexampled bitterness. Doth sides seem to agree that the grcenlnu-k clement is the Afriijin in tlie wMil-ile, and both fear that ni.s sable majestv may tumble out on the wrong side and determine- the issue. It was admitted a week ago that the Republicans were gaining in the race, but it is chemed now that the Dcmeracy is abreast with the Morton leaders, and will be in tlr. lx-st .-condition frlhe liotne-stretch. The state is fairly tlebatahle, although naturally DciiKK-ratic, and if it shall le lost .to 'fil'de n in O-tolier, it must lie lceaiise they they didn't understand how to meet Morton in a death struggle. If he has made them wallow rats, they shouldn't parley to le told that they must swallow cats, and if the eats ran t be had, they may as well strike their colors. The loss of Indiana to cither
