THE INDIANA STATE SENTINEL WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 20, 1876 G

MOETON VS. MORTON.

The Senator's Sentiments in 'C8 and 72. OPPOSITE OPINIONS. DEMOCRATIC DOCT RISKS DROPPED BE V tMPID BADIC&USM RAMPANT. To tbe Editor of the Sentinel. Sir: Can there be a more crushing or cfl'C.ive answer to Morton's bloody shirt than Morton blmsell 7 Certainly not. By xcen accident this morning I picked op a politic! scrap-book, improvised by mjBeli ab-n', 1869 or 1870, and in It was the following, copied from the Indianapolis Journal by some o her ppr. Unfortunately, I omitted to note the date of the paper, bnt the elections alluded to In the article will enable the politician to fix the year. Ttn article is introduced by the editor of tbe paper from which it was c!ippd thus: 'Senator Morton, through the Journal 01 Saturday, thus lays down the future policy of his party: Tbe sentiment of the thinking portion of the parpl of the whole country has been especially drifting towlrd the speedy obliteration ot the last vestiges oi loo war and tbe return as far as possible and rapidly as possible to the condition of entire and complete union and harmony cot only in the general government, bat in the several states. . Tbe elections in Tennessee and Virginia, where the disfranchising clause of their state constitutions have beea so overwhelmingly repudiated, Lave hastened tbe growth of this feeling In Missouri and Went Virginia. In tbe - former state the movement is ably led by S-jnator Carl Scburz, ai led by the Missouri Democrat and tbe Westliche Poet. In tbe latter state tbe movement waa only commenced this summer, but it h&9 already attained such dimensions and such Telocity that It will undoubtedly sweep the state In the coming election, and secure a legislature which will put la operation tbe constitutional plan by wnicb the disfranchisement may be removed. "This movement, which has swept over tbe states of Tennessee and Virginia like a besom, has gathered too much momen turn to be easi y stepped. It has force enough to command dlspvslnnate and reasonable attention from tbe R -publican . party. Clear-beaded Republicans will see that the duty of that organization Is to lead and iruide the inevitable, eo that the werft accomplished in tbe years or blood and turmoil may not be overturned. It is not for tbe Republican party to array it self in feeble opposition to this current

, arid be overcome and borne away.

THB KNFRASCHI-FMENT OF ALL PEOPLE XTJST COMB sooner or later, if we expect to bave a union and live in peace and harmony one with another. We can not keep bleeding and fresh the wounds of the war. We can not be constantly tearing open the bloody history of tbe past. We can not ea'ely keep a ltrge portion of tbe population dis abled and disfranchised. We most bind np the bruises and wounds of rebellion; we must heal dissensions, we must walk shoulder to shoulder in the accomplishment of a future and not drift away each from tbe other upon tbe disagreements nf the past. Nor can tbe Republican party safely and logically affirm its principle of (quality without providing the way for the enfranchisement of the former rebels, who are to live wi h us, be part ot us and whcea destiny is wrapped up in ours in spite ol all we can say or do." Was Morton tlrctre In tbs utterances th e, or were they not the result cf fear and forebodings of defeat in tbe coming elec Ions if the party should persist in bloody shirt appeals' ard practices? His appeal to th party theD, was not prompted by manliness and humanity and a desire for fairdf a' n toward the down-trodden Sruth, but from a fear of tbe loss of political power, unle s the party should cbaoge its tactic Tbis appeal in favor ot right and humanity was answered by renewed Republican victories, and now, tba such course will cot insure Republican victory, Morton ' goes back to tne wr era and seeks to gain votes by an appeal to the rrn-antsS passions a id worst impulses of fa! lea humanity. In thus contradicting ai d stultilviDg himself. Morton Is simply consistent with Mortou. One thing 1 beyond perad venture, he can neither cheat, nor dlude, nor coax any npright or fair-minded man to vote the Republican ticket by merely flaunting the bloody shirt of prejudice and bate before bis eyes. He said then, '.WJt CAN NOT KEEP BLEKDLNO THE WOUNDS OF THB WAR, if we expect to live In peace and harmony one with another, we ran not keep bleed lngand fresh the wounds of tae war; we caa not be constantly tearing open tbe bloody history ot the past, but must bind up the bruises and wounds of tbe rebellion, must walk shoulder to shoulder in the accomplishment of a future. Their destiny is ours in spite of all that we can do." If tbat was good seosa and sound logic some five or ix years since, is it not equally so now? Voten of Indiana, read the above from Morton's, pen a few years Since, and sen 11 you don't think that he talked theu like a rational man, and seemingly with tbe heart of a human being. Follow that advice now, and don't listen to his insane ravin over southern outrage, a crop of wbich is invented to order by carpet baggers in tbe South and sent op into tbe North to in flame the public mird, and thereby In flu ence eleo ious. la 1868, in 1872, ana now again 1876 tbe outrage mills have been started, aiid the fact that these only grind in the year ot our presidential elections is significant, and rebuts tue idea ot truthfulness. Falsehood can be msnutactured to order, bat truth is born of facts, and din t come to the bidding of man or devil. Morton himself dou't believe tbe lalhoodshe retails of southern outrages, do he resorts to tnis method now to give a pretext for disfranchising, by tbe use o the bayonet, the men he then sought to en franchise, blowing bof and cold with tte same breath. I hope, Mr. E liter, tbat you will at crjoe publiso tbe abava article fr m cnsla'eit Morton', pen, and by thus le -ticg th9 people see wnat manner of man he is, destroy or at least cripple his power for further malicious m'seMef.
