In reviewing the course of trade during the week ending this evening,' the remark that In the general merchandise markets business bas bitn quiet Is about all that can be said. Bayer are more than usually cau'lous, purchasing chiefly artlc e of prime necessity, and In town and country tbe policy seems to be to make no bad debts. Tnat tbe regular buyers in this market will be In a much better condition to pay for their goods than last season, and the eutlook for he lull season is therefore regarded favorable for an active and a remunerative trade. There has been a good degree of activity daring iht past week In corn, and receipts and ship ments have been of average magnitude Prices have weakened omewhat, though the decline has not been such as to attract special attention. Oat have ruled stiODg, with an Improved demand. Toe demand for wheat is more active, and buyers for shipment are in the mar ket awaiting receipts upon a scale that wu enable tbem to operate. TBE ORSIS MOVEMENT OF THE CROP TEAR. IFrom the New York Railroad Uazette of AcKuit it j The crop year for grain In the Ncrthwest and and the East begins in August, that being probably the best date for email grains, but no for corn, as all the corn marketed for several months yet will be that grown in 1S75 Perhaps tbe calendar year would be as good as any for ha corn year; but there Is less objection to dating from August 1 ror corn bciusemottof the old c mis marketed before that Um1 at least Is out of the farmtrs' bands by that time. SIZg OF APPLE BARRELS IMPORTAMT : lO FRUIT GROWERS. Tbe Chicago Commercial Bulletin cays: As the treason Is rapidly advancing during which a large amount of the above named fruit is pacaed and placed In store for winter use, a few suggestions as to ths best mode of packli.g and tbe size of the packages to be used, maybe acceptable, and. If carefully noted, may be of considerab'e benefit to soma shippers. One great difficulty In establishing suady mark-1 vame, which is annually experienced, is tbat so many different sited barrels aie used by shippers that tbe aalrsor tbe same quality and variety ol apples covei qalie a wine range, which is oue entirely to tbe difference in tue quantity contained In various sized packages. This causes consHerable difesatisiacilou to shippers, and is the occasion of much expUnalon on tbe part o receivers. 'l he prlucl al difficulty artbes from oonsigomenta irom Eastern states, where they hve msdeita prscUce to use chiefly the mallersized burels In making op consignments. Letters have been received from soue parties in the E si whlcu state thst an effort Is being made to overcome this custom, and such an action la heartily endorsed aud encouraged bv merchants b.re. Buyers In thU msreetbave aiwjs discriminated widely in making selections ot finlt, they in almost every Instance preferring the large sized barrels, even at a shade better price than con d be obtained for soj aller ones, it Is only when there Is a sea cltv of stock that the small slz- barrels can be disposed of with aiiy degree or freedom i and, ki oar mutet Is generally well supplied during the frnlt season, and pp es reoelve1 tbat are pat op In small barrets and are uol prop-rly packed, are very siowtaie. Now, if one size of btrrel could be ade tb standard, very f vorab resnlt would fol ow, for tbe aaiea made would be more nniio.m in price, and shippers could be constantly informed with som dfgreeolrertai q 1 1 , as to wbateonslgnments bat they are des.rous of sbipolog w -alX bring ou this market, and Instead of receivers being b'e to dispose or some lots With r adln-ss, while others would s imeümei have lo be held nutll they were In an nnmercnaat sble condition, sales would De more uniform. Home snippers may not understand exactly what the size ol barrel shorld be In ordert? sell mst readily In thla market, and to 'hem we would ar that a barrel otihesme size as a flour buret Is most preferable. We would a'so suggest that, during the lemainder of the warm weather, it Is ad visible for shippers to cut openings In both the beads and tne sides of the barrel, thus allowing veuti'ailon, which tends to preserve tb erudition of tbe fruit a greater length of time. At the present time boxes sbonld be entirely done away with, Y3t Who demand m UoioUly MS baxx&t Xa
packing apples for winter nse, we would ad-, vioe shlppeis to carry out tbe following Instruciloiis: Take the barrel, one head ont, nail j the hoops ana break off tbe ends of nalis lnslde mke sure that It is clean; place a layer j ortierofap Dies, fair, smooth aud b.lght, asi
closely as josi Die, sums uowu wara, ou iu lower bead: then fill up, a basket lull at a time, throwing out small, wormy, snarly and windfall apples, and sbaaing tbe barrel well after each deposit until it is full, two Inches ab .ve the rim ; place tbe bead squarely on the appls, ana wl.h screw or lever press furo it into place, aud nail securely. Turn over barret and mark name oi apples with red or black lead, or stencil. Hear In mind tbat to ship safely, fruit mast he picked tixht, to prevent rattling aud bruialn;. The practice of "inrmlnz od or "deacon ng" Is ot "torplng oa very bad policy; that is, h.vlog tbe lace of all caolce, large, bandsomd :ruit, while the m Idole la made no of poor. commoD, bruised, or windfalls. Nothlcg wM sell a package oi fruit so readily as for ilie seller ti bi aole to ssy to his customer, I can guarantee this to be honeUy p -csed, and tbat tbe lace Is a fair indication ot the contents," and it add to tbe repaia Ion of grower, commission dealer, and retailer. The New York Bulletin fays: Fora number of years tbe produce dealeisu our city have been t roubl d greatly by the Irregularity In the size ol barrrl, aud are Dually making an tfiort to remedy the evil so far as this state and Its apple crop is concerned. The prhcipa. aim la to get rid of wLat is known among tbe trade as tbe "pony barrel," a p ckage oi very uncertain capact y, except that U is sure to run much smaller thn Justice to the consumer demands. Under tbe law s passed by tbe last Legislature, tue making or using of a barrel lortbt sale ol apples, quince, or potatoes of less than one hundted quart, dry measure. Is suhjtct to a tine, and some aid can be obtained tbi ougb this lact to further the object in view. teu theoüe hundred-quart barrel, however, ceale assert to be a fraud, legalized f-T cerialu uika, merely because custom n&d broubt it in ge eral uoe, and they propose using tneir efforts to luduce frul. growers to ad.pt the dour barrel at 1 6 quarts, dry measure. AsU means u this end t'.e Idea Is lo ba-e all priceon a lot-qnart barrel as a standard, to maaea reduction of2oc for the liü quart barrel, anu a still fnrther'.al-crimlnaiion agains. the "pony" o at least 23c, and a.so to prosecute on tue lat ter under the act. It Is to be hoped fruit an I potato growers will asslii in orinilng the htnet sizsd barrel into use. COFFKF, SUGAR AND TEA STATISTICS. ON 'CHANGE. There was f ally an average attendance on change to-dav, and tbe ball presented a business-like appearance. Tbe grain dealers were out la force, and at the call board, which was cjnducted by E. C. HOWLETT, ISQ. Offers and bids for corn gave the the meeting a degree of animation which In these dull limes was exhilarating. In this connection it Is proper to remark that some of tbe SALES REPORTED are di-credltai by dealers, for instance, 100 cars raxed corn f. o. b. oa private terms tbe report being current that no such sal wasm.de. Business Is business, and practical Jokes on Change when they relate to the movement of grain can ba omitted with positive benefit to the In erests of trale. rite provision market was weaker lo-d ly, and holders wera dispose j to make concessions, but not to the exunt that enabled buyers to report transactions, and s a con&iquente we have no trans tctlons to report. THE HOO CROP CF OHIO. Tbe assessors returns for the counties of Ohio show an aggregate of l.Snl.SiD hogs returned this year, against 1,778,39 hogs last year. PROGRESS CF SUMMER PACKING. The Chicago Daily Commercial Bulletin, of Saturday, rays: Tne receipts 01 boss during the past week were fair, and packers transacted a moderate business; price? ruled about lrl"xj lower per I'O as on the whole rang'-, nd they purchased a larger -percentage of tue arrivals. 1'be quality of (he hogs continues goo' fully up to the average of previous weeks-aud the lighter qualities still command a premium. Tbe tone of the foreign advices is rainer discouraging to manufacturers of hog product, and they are giving domestic cuts a little more attention matrlng contracts tor small lo.s to b9 delivered during tbe later pat of this inonih. The houses.asa rule, are generally running about one-half their capacity merely enough to keep tbe bands employed. There Is a fair amount of product on ha d In process ol carin, but the supp y on the market i comparatively light packers as a rule havli g kept their manufacture well sold ahead, anu the bulk of he produ t now going forward consists of sum mer-cured delivered on contract. The packing to date aggregates about 8- 0 000 hogs, aaiust about 25,ooo to date at this time IsHt year. At other points, s'aughterlng is progres Ing moderately, though thera is a general ircllLMtion to curtail operations for the present. The pack ng at Cedar Rxpids to data is 81,851 ho?, against 4i,24 to date last year. TEE "SODRIES" which the Brokers wera required to set up, as per terms of their challenge to the Packers so far as we can learu have not been observab'e to the naked eye and It Is currently reported, that a squire back down Is notonly possible but probable. If such should be tbe case, it will not be the first Instance on record where vaulting ambition overleaped itself' or boasting braves took to their heels when a little more pluck would have entitled them to a cennn:aj toas".
