With the commencement of another month, H is encouraging to note the fact, that as corn pared with the 1st of July the business out look has not bscome less promising, on the contrary there Is much to inspire hopefu nees and confidence, with abundant crops, safely harvested, there ought to be In spite of tome adverse circumstances a good lall trade, and that such wiu be realized Is the general belief. There are those, however, who take a different view of the subject, as the following from the Chicago Inter-Ocean will show: The Indications of increasing stagnation o' business as above mentioned in New V ork are to some extent manliest al-o here In Cblcago. The dullness of trad", and the decrease of about 30 per cent. In the average dally bank o erlngs In the last two weeks, show that the Käme conditions prevail here as in New York, or, for that matter, all over the I'm ted States and Europe. It Is use.eh for people to deceive themselves wlih fancied indications of lm Drovemn - in industry and uide; the times are getting narder every week. There is less trade and 1.88 percentage ol profit in what trade there Is; less industry; les consumption of a most all commodities; tower prices, les nse lor capital, and less coufldence than there was a year ago, or even a month ago. Of coon-e there la likely to be some Improvement on this condition of things this tall when thecrooxa-e moved, but ihe causes which He at the found ation 01 this depression and lack of confidence are not c nnand to the United Si ales, and therefore are not likely to be overcome by any "Nil trade" activity. We have exp alue.J many ilmes In tbls column what we believe 10 be the causes of this universal depression, viz: Tha mania to have sold aa the oniv mettlilo money of Eurone: tbe decreasing Droductlon of sold; tbe demonetization of silver, inus aooiiooiug tor use in r.urope one-naif the u oney ot tne rest of tbe world: the hoarding of gold by the banks of Fiat.ce and Germany, thus increasing .i.e scarcity of the only aind of money le t. Admitting the general facts set forth by the Inter-Ocean, we hold, nevertheless, that there Is much to encourage tbe people and to remove the burden of despondency that or a long time has weighed down the energies of business men. "Business methods," says an exchange, ''all through the country have been carefully revised, credits have been cut down. More has been done in the way of economy, persona', commercial and Indus trial, ihau could posloiy have been expected. The crops have been uniiormly Rood, and though Immigration has fal.eu olT. U has been large enough to add lmmeuseiy to the wealth of ibecouKliy. With lo great failures o crops, no plagues, wars, or other national catastropnes, tne worn 01 nnanclal scavengerlng that must. fol low a great collapse like that of 1S73 should now be nearly complete. That sucn wa tbe Oise there has been some very good evidence. The earnings of most ot the railroads nave begun steaaiiy to increa-e,ana their returns to show a great gain In ibe amount ot commodities Uantported. Bank oearings In tae cnlef cities, .houga now at their l west point, indicate, wuen interpreted by tbe heavy decline in ail prices, mat tne transactions the checks represent are on tho Increase." Evidently the country demands itablllty in legislation that bears dir. ctly or remotely upon buMne&a Interest, and aasoon aa the people ean believe that the whims of presidents and secretaries of the treasury, 01 members of Con gress are no longer to disturb the flnanceaof the country, ar d that common sense and honesty are to be the governing forces In shaping financial legislation, we may look for a revival of business in all of Us depart ments. The grain market to-day was quiet under fair movement in corn. At about tbe same figures that prtrsiled yesterday, wheat is steady, and was a fraction better at leading points. Oats a re steady, with indications of an improved demand at bttter prices. In regard to the CONDITION OP THX WHEAT II STORK HI CHI CAGO, the Inter-Ocean of Monday says : Tbe committee pointed by the president of the Boaid of Traue to examine the cono tion of tbe wheat In store here submitted tne following report on 1'bai.ge to-aay : John R. or this city, and report to you the result of : such examination ior the benefit and lnformaI tlon of the trade, beg leave respectfully to re- ' port that they have visited every elevator in th city In which Is sored any wheat, and bave made a very tborocgh examination a to tbe couditloa of all the No. 2 regular and No. 2 ! Northwestern wheat in store, drawing a lib ral quantity from ech bin, with the Ingle exJ cepiion of elgnt bin In one house that we
could not get at on account or oosirucuoLS, 10 remove nlch would caue considerable delay. We find, as a general tblng.the wbea (of the grades referred to) to be In good condition and everyway merchantable, Kith the following exceptions : In tbe Air Line Elevator there was one bin. No. 140, containing about 4.1 0' bushel that was little soft; but. in tbe Jrdgmenl of ibe committee, is not damaged. In the City Klevator. bins 42, JNo. 2 Northwestern, and 72, regular No. 2 wheat, were a trifle arm and need handling: there was no smell of heating upon it, and the committee do not consider It damaged. In Ihe C, B. and Q. elevator C, we lound bins Nos 11 aod 291 slightly sott, but not warm, in tbe Fulton elevator we lonnd bins 1", 41 and 44 a tiifle warm, bni radliy curab'e by prompt handling. In he Northwestern elevator the wheat might be caued sligbtly fcolt, but not in any way out of condlilo. n Meely 'a elevator we lound bins 17 and 85 slightly warm, and should be ;handled. The committee are glad to ray that they were assisted in every way In their examination by tbe proprietors or the several elevators and their employes, and they are satisfied that they are taking all the Deeded measures, as they should, to preserve the property in their charge. Your committee are unanimously of tbe opinion that none of the wheat abo.e referred to as exceptions to prime condition, is ot a character or condition that wornd Justify the eleva cr proprietor in ponilng sucu wheat as out of coLditlOD. Reepe tfuily submitted, J. W. Preston, J. D. Cole, Jr , II. w Hokeks, Jr, f. D. Foss, J.J. at c Derm in, Committee. Chicago, July 19, 1876. Opinions In regard to this report are various, and i:s effect on the grain tiade of the city is still a matter or conjecture. A great many members of tbe ßoaru it Trade regard the ap pointment of the committee a mistake that tbe proprietors of tbe elevators and the inspectors were competent to take care of tbe pioperty, as it is to their interest to do so, and protect tbe business of the city. On the other band, parties claim tht tbe report is even worse lor the grain trade than if It bad actually resorted wheat out of condition, because 1. leaves the impression that a fair pt rtiou of it 1 liable to get out of condition at any time, and Operator will be unwuuog to carry it. 11 tbe grain wa ported out ol condition, and the numbeis of the bins given, there would be tome degree of certainty about it. Again, others claim that the report of tbe committee, with the cplDlon expressed In regard to the probable luture con dition of wbeat, will do much toward a. laying tneiears expressed, dv noioers, sua win en able shlppeis to guard against receiving grain from tbe Dins reported as holding grain likely to be damaged. Quite a number of operators In wheat ex press the opinion that there is very illtle more soft or warm wheat here at tbe present time than is usual at this season of the year. To at hardly a summer season l ast-en, unless it be an unusually cool one, that tbere Is not some warm grin in the elevators, but it is not made i ubli being carefully hndUdby the managers of the elevators. it is wen known mat the wneat crop 01 is.a was an unusually roor one, and extremely difficult to take care of la storehouses, and 11 would not be surprising if some of it sbou d bs damaged by the extremely hot weather, especially in the Eastern markets. There was a somewhat better feeling in the market to-day, and sales of 120.10J barrels of dry Bait shoulders were made at c. Clear rib sides are held at 10c, while 9jc is the limit of offers: THE PROGRESS OF SUMMER PACKING Is referred to by tbe Chicago Commercial Bul'etin ol Saturday as follows: The receipts of hogs daring the past week were comparatively light, and packers bave transacted very il. tie business. Price have been moderately well maintained, while the feeling in tbe foreign and Eastern markets was rather nntavorsble lo manufacturers, and tbe export demand lor product was unusaany ngnt. ine iuidk irx In the receipts or hogi is Lot unexpectedfarm rs are now engaged in their hat vent work, ana will probably pay ll'tl attention to the moveaaent ot live stocks M, lug the next t'lroe or four weeks. "Ihe quality 01 the h gs arriving continues quite good I nlly up to tue avei age of previous weeks, and smooth, light bacon lots still command a premium. The manufacture Is still restricted mainl to the production of mexti suitable for export, wlih th exception of bams packers iiow engaged in tb manufacture of the domestic cut of tne atter. Tbere is also a little more doing in the manufacture of the lUhter qualities of pork, and packers have quite a number of contracts ahead for small lo.s in fact, brokers ean only fill their ordei s for tbes-i deecrlptlons In this way as the stocks are exhausted. i - e packing tooate aggregate about o.wi to 75(,C00 bogs, against aoout 5i0,00j for the corresponding period last year, and a total packing of 72V31 bog9 during tbe summer season of 1875. At Indianapolis packing 1 pre g resins at the rate of about 6,1 oj hogs per wek. At other points tbe situation is unchanged packing la not being pushed as urgently as It was one month ago. PIG IRON. Prices rule steady. Messrs. L. K. Hall A Co. Of Cincinnati In their circular or the 3lstult.( say no Important changes can be repotted, the market retaining the same quiet, almost monotonous features that have for so long chr. acterized It. We are now, however, In what Is usually called the dullest month In the year, and It Is reasonable to look for at least a some what Improved it-qulry beginning soon after August . The more favorable reports or tbe crops re ceived are some w at encouraging, and a bet ter feeling Is noticeab ein businessctrc.es thn if tne damage done In certain sec ions by ih late rains had proved more extensive and dl -astrous. CiDCinnal being the largest forwardit. g market for pig iron In the country is directly affected by the condition of the large territory supplied, jrnces as oeiow ruie tne same aa last week. WOOL. Tbaraarket here is quiet and steady. Re ceipts ar said to be seasonably active, though a good many larmer and coun try dealers are evidently holding back for netter prices. in regtra to to tbe New York market the Commercial Bulletin of Saturday says: business sun alis to develop any brilliant f atures, and though a few of our dealers who are in io8fealon of a'triclve assortments ean now and then manage to run up a pretty good list ot sales, tbere 1m an absence of general animation. At some of tbe tner seab aid cities the distribution of wool has been very good since tbe opening of tbe month, owing in part to an earner ana larger receipts 01 new supplies; and as this no doubt meets the current wanta 01 consumers, 11 win require tbe growth of fresh nece allies to stimulate new demand eltber tbere or here. Manufacturers in a great many ases still appear to ei t er tain doubts In regard lo the amount or production warranted, aua antil they arrive at some sort of cone usionupoa thlsaubj- ct, purchaser of materlad eaa scarcely be expected to go beyond the known re qnlrementa ot tbe looms. In a word, the uncertain markets lor goo, more than any other cause, retards tbe 'Utrlou ion of wool, and it is next to Impossible to induce either dealers or consumer to speculate upon the chanc s of an improvement. Tbe auction sales of flanne.s this weea were more encouraging, and this In t use a hopeful eeling;but as yet it Is a little too early to decide upon the full influence on the wool market.
