SCENES ON SHIPBOARD. Pen Pictures of Human Nature That Our Correspondent Came in Contact With in a "V oyago across the Atlantic. LIFE IN LIVERPOOL. 'WHAT IT COSTS TO LTVB IN EUB0PBAN HOTELS mtlBAVAQASCE IX ENGLISH UVISO. , Forelga Correspondence of the Sentinel. Liverpool, Jane 20. Twelve days at ea In constant company with 40 human baingi gives a keen obnervar of human nature a broad field lor comment, especially If.eigbt days oat of twelve are foggy, when wet deka, rough sea, drencbing sails, confine all ia one loom. There is no place in the world, not even at borne, where people are o nonchalant as at ea. The eUnant young tanker will flirt desperately with the giddy gOAerness, walk toe deck, play card', and be her SUve. It a pleasant oioob bsamg he will ruh off to some remota corner of the ship and there, 'neatb a wing of cnvs, spread bis sheltering arnis around asickly eeaaietrees and wbifpir paasion in her ears. Others will exhibit their taste lor card playing, others reading, goaippiug and drinki. g, acd the well behaved crowd that left 8ndy Hook will bbow all ttielr peculiaritie before they reach "merrie Enal-nd." Sime will botst their weals b, otbns relate tbeir nils fortunes. Sucn a mixture! Balcner, biker, banker, teacher, and some irrepressible c rrtspoudent of a penny sneei, will s t down and tell unwilling l.steners his relations with BUTLER, MORTON, AND OTHER NOTORIOUS CHARATKR9. Ah ! what a pleasure wneo land ia in Bight and one can leave the company of such queer specimens of humanity, for I conless in my fifteen tripe across the briny deep I never met such queer types; and I thought. Well, America can spare them. We nave plenty without tam there. "Wnen I heard That an flderof Brigbaui Toung'a was going over uat to bring ten honored Mormons over, I sighed and eaid: "Yet England throws polygamy in our face and thrusts Salt Ltke Mormons upon us by the thousand." These Mormons I met on fthe ship bad a certain amount of education. There were three ot them a father and two daughters, one aged twenty and the other Iii teen, who, at that early age, knew as much of human nature aa most women ot forty. Was It their example In Salt Lake? Eel o answered, Was it! What a shudder passed over me, as I saw a large dinner knile And its way to the mouth of a wealthy butcuer Irom Salt Lake, a faithful discpte of Brigbam Ycnng, and how glad I was and selfish to wish mm 8-a-ick so as I might be spared the onpleas tut sight ot seeing nim in dancer of cutting his ripe red lips with glow ing steel: but unfortunately be always managed to be present at dinner, much to the di-gust ot a learn d elegant minister of the "High Church," known as St. C. in the Quaker City, whose seat was si situated at tbe table a-, to force him to see tbe two Venusea" do the same tbiog as their weaitoy fatber. At y compaction de voyage, a pleasant lady lu.l of frpi-it, said they reminded ber of good ra ured animal?; Des.aes, sue said, there was grea.deat to be forgiven a man Wüo had two wives, sixteen children, and SIX DACOHTKR9-IN-LAW, ne son tot twenty-five having ttarre legitimate wives and several children. But the butcher wa- a millionaire, so most peo51e could only see perfection with money be American conaul here is a genial Wes tern man, Gn. Lucuis Fircbild, tne hero of man) a battle in oar late civil war, of which be carries tne tad signet an armless sleeve. He has been consul heie since 1872. and no man has shed more credit on tbe consul a e than be, by bia attention to his duties. Be resides a 'short distance ot Liverpool with bis family, consisting o bis wife a d two children. Mrs. Fairchi d was a noted beauty in Washington SDClety, when she was Miss Bull, wh'le the general aa a tern aad a politician do-erves do faiut praise. I asked tbe general what be thought of the elections. ElesMd be was not at all surprised at the result, though a staunch Republican. He said that Hendricks the man for the Democrat. H said they must have a Wester i m in. Sp-aklng of America be eail d It ' God's country." He said it wa an utter iau pot-si bdlty for a small family to live in Liverpool under $5 000 a year, gold. Prices w-re exborbi tant dearer than London. The general is very hospitable and enter tains a great many Americans who ar transiently a j rarotn in this great tea pott city. Wl bout namng any one, be informed m ' it was sad to see the numbtr of ds'i' ute Americans w bo wtrt fl sating all over fcampe- and wdo struggle to reach Liverpool, and there bnps to be fent bonce bv tbe cor sol Olcnrae the number grows larger ecb day. Ecb one has some pain ful story to rela'e. In mostcses tbey are parsons wno nave oeia gooa p sitfons in 11 ie. This Is termed lunch. Two tiny wine glasses of sherry wine (tbe cheapest wine
sold In England), one ehll ing; a pipes of gooseberry pie (a email piece at that) niy cenla: total, three shilling, or seventy five cents of our money, roe train wa ready to leave, but I saved the bill, aa I expect to pay a visit tbere on my return to "God's country." as FalrchUd cans America. It vou should take lunch or dinner here while passing through, unless you are a permanent boarder, you must pay twelve cents extra icr navirg your dinner served yon ana six cents for lunch or breakfast,, and vet tbe waiters expect a fee besides, (should yon ask a little vinegar extra, it ia 12 cents: a sheet of paper with the notei advertisement on it, two cents, and an envelope two cents so tbev ad vertise through tne mails and travellers pay their bills tor paper, etc., etc.; a bit of ice in agiass oi ater in tbe public restaurant is 4 pence 8 cents of our money. I suppose at t bat rate a pitcher or Ice water would cost 50 cents. Tney don't charge lor the use oi tne ms bottle, bnt if a pen U poor tbey will sell von one. I forgot to state tbey doo'l charge for soap. Tbere Is mv pen picture ot a hotel where these cnarg-s have been in existence four years, and I am sore I am not the first to bring them to the attention of Americans wbo contem plate atrip to Enrope. Tnree years since a prominent doctor from Hammer-, wno was a victim to extortion, wrote letter more descriptive than mine in i Bulle tin of that city concerning this fauious establishment, where CIVILITY 13 AN ACCIDENT and outrageous charges its only virtue. The London trains that run from London to Liverpool are exceedingly neat and comfortable. Tbere are several during tbedajjfor instance, three express and three slow. Tbe scenery on the road is beautiful, all tbe land being laid out in a state of a high cultivation, fine hedges, def p green prsturee, strawberry beds. Bleeping bills verdure clad, shady valless watered witb clear streams from tbe hillsides. Here and there palatisl residences peeping out behind grand old trees. All leave a delightful Impression on the tiiind before reaching dingy London. One objection I have to this railroad to London i, your baggage is never checked. The name of the station where you land is pasted on it, and when you reach your destination you have to stand with auene crowd and find your own trunk. Qreat attention has to be paid, particularly by strangers, otherwise tbe first parvenue may claim your trunk and walk off witb It, and tbe company will not be responsi ble. r, aa they say In London, "watch vour box." Tbe underground railway In London is excellent, but tbe 'busses are dingy, oftener dir'v, and tbe fares for short distances four cents for twelve furlongs. Their cabs are dirty and inelegant in upholstery, but tbey serve tbe psople at reasonable rates six pence a mile, equal to twelve cents ot our money. and about sixty-two cents an bour. The "hansom cabs" are all very nice; tbey accommodate with ease two persons, and the charges are very reasonable. The American horse cars here, called tremway, are seat and clean, but they are limited to certain Quarters ot tbe city, .bare, ot course, are double what tbey are In Amer ica. So that with tbe exception of the un derground railroad we are far ahead ot tbis great metropolis in traveling comiorts and prices. COST OF LIVING IN LONDON. Rents A little less than in New York and furnished houses and apartments con side r able lees for Instance an, excellent bouse in a good location costs about (11 50 per month, anil has many domestic ro iti fortp. Lerge bouses in fine locations cot even as high as $700 and upward per month Miss ellon, tbe actress, wbo resides at Hyde Park, pays tbe neat sum of fS 500 yearly tor a very fine bouse. Fruits are very dear in London, and in fact all kinds or vegetables. Straw berries are verv scarce, and 4 sbil ings a plate is assed Shopping in London is an art, for tbere is no c y in Europe where one can be so readily Imposed on. Hpeaking tbe Eng lisb language does not help one In tbis great ci y, and Americans, I regret to say are legitimate prey. Tbey are supposed to earn tbeir money so easy there ia no harm In mak ng them rpand it freely Even at swan A E Igar'tf, one of the b 8 dry goods estaolionments In London, ask a much as any bouse In New York Their seal skins, tbeir cloaks and silks, not to mention tbeir ribbons and fancy article?, are in com parison dearer tban in New York We are less misrepresented in the columns of tbe newspapeis than we were, even three years sire, we are not quite so savage, so enat-Indian as formerly. There s eversibing attractive in Londou as far as art, science aDd amuBemet.t are coo ceroid. But I must defer my visits to 'objets d'interet." and cross the dreadfu channel to see "La Belle Frane."
