Letters from Bloomington DoBcriptive of the Commencement Exercises. THE STATE UNIVERSITY. CXOSIIVO OF 1EI KXKBCISKS THE K'SAYS AUD ORATIO OIVINQ THK DIPIX)JAS COIfFKRRISQ DEGREES. (Special Correspondence of the SentlneL Bloomisotow, I5D., Jan 15. In addition to the report seat yesterday of the graduating exercises ot tbe senior class, a brief notice of the performances of the afternoon may not be wholly uninteresting. "The Commanding Element of Character," by E. A. Shields, of Mount Carmel, was the opening performance of the afternoon, and was a very snooothlv and carefully prepared oration. "What Woman Can Do," an oritlon delivered by Mies Lina Adams, ot Bloomington, is deserving of especial mention. Alisa Adams baa been in college for five years, having taken the classical course, and this production, clearly and fully treated, stripped ot all attempts at word painting, was one of the best among the exercises ot tbe dy. The subject was treated In a conservative rather than a radical view ot this, a question of no amall Interest at tbe present time, and was earnestly Hs'ened to by all present, SJeut Ir.flaet.ee." ty Mle Flora C. Kendall, ot Wa sonville, Cal., wathe next in order, aod was a most interesting performance, evincing tbe highest culture and finish. W. B. Durborrow, of Williamsport, gave s mott excellent oration on tbe su jeer, "War a Factor in Civilization. Mr. Durbrrow is recogniz! aa one ol tbe bet of our college orators, and fully sust aius himself in this bis lam opportunity in college honor. Time prevents a notice cf all tbe performances, but the das prophecy by Miss Alice ' Pochards of Clear Spring, was so intemt.ng and amusing tbat it must not be wholly Ignored. As she pc urfd tbe future oi tbmcomU'g lusiices of tbe peace, and blue-stocking lecturers on woman's right, ehe was continually Interrupted by laughter and applause, wuenever tht weakness of anyone was brought out. THE VALBDIOTORY, tha first bonor ol the cl-w-s was deliver d by Sam. E. Darwood.cf Carbondale, I1Ünote. In the o&ierrlng of degrees, Dr. Moss, the prts'dent, said: Class of 1876 The diplomas which have Just been delivered to you are attestations of work done, and their reception by you la a pledge to the world that you will do better work in tbe future, because of the opportunities you have here enjoyed. In themselves, these pieces of prcbmem are-valueless as valueless as tbe floral tributes which have jaat been showered upon yon, destined soon to wither and lade. But both alike are testimonials ot appreciation, e-teem and affection, and with this significance may readily become strong incentives and encouragements. The world into which you are now passing will care very little lor the p'ace of jour graduation as little for tbe name of your parents. It will ask only after the quality of your work what you have done, what you are doing, what you can do and it will expect better work from you than from those who have been de- ' nltd your course of educatioo. Especially should ycu bear in mind that your proper spirit and attitude toward tbe world will be those of learners. If you become anything in society, and do anything wcrth doing, a considerable period yet will be spent in the comparative qatet and obscurity of preparation. Ana the character ot your fntnre work will depend upon the way In wbich you spend tns jeJMOl q .let, obscurity, meditation and thoughtful study. Moreover you are to carry the spirit and methods of Kamera through lite. If you are to GROW IN INFLUENCE, In happiness, in power, eveu down to green old age, you must keep jour minds open to the reception ot all trutu truth in thought. In knowledge, In sentiment, in leeliog, to tbe end. Dear students, I love you in a way you will appreciate better by and by tbart now; though, indeed, I know you appreciate and reciprocate it now; I ut you have won my neart. You are going out Into the battle 01 We. Tbe way will sometimes be weary, the knapsack a burden, the armor ot lite will wear and gall you. 1 would, if possible, beiore I part from you, leave with you some word that my In sacb boars of toil and loneliness become a stimulus . and encouragement. Let it b this: Tba.tbe permanent and fadeless honors and awarda of life are given to simple fidelity not to tbe great, the learned, tbe cjnepicuoas, and sacb, but 1 1 the faithful. " Be ti ou faithful now. death, and I will glre thee tbe crown ot lite. In tbe last great review, in tbe final examination, when the honors ot eternity are a signed Dy tbe Mt er or us all, may this be vour welcome and tbis your reward. God ble-ts you, every one After the address to tbe claes by Dr. Mos, the work of the board of t rns'ees was an nouncea. ine aezre o LL. U. was con ferred on E. E. White, presi dent of Purdne Uaolvernlty, and on TbomM u. Bdhrroil. of Viuceni.ee. Some changes have taken place In tbe faculty. Col. Jauae Thorn p on retiring irom the cnair o; civu engne ring on account of tailing health. la parting with Prof. Thompson, we can truly sty that tbe university loses one of its m-tnt earnest and laltutul workers; one who during bin tay has d me as much lor tbe building up of tbe university as could be debited, and wnonas aone more t estaoitsn a THOROUGH DICIPLT9B than any of hie associa e. Accustomed by bis habits of life that of regular army officers to have order In everything around him, be has labored bard and suc cessfully in bringing np the discipline ot the university from tbe chaotic state in which it waa found when firs be came among us. May be Ith aud prcs;rity te h'g n w ha' ever way he may go. Prof. H B. Boise n was elected to fill the chair of m dern languages, wbich po sition be so etifdC only filled from 1S71 to 1873, and WlUUm Uallantina elected as assistant prole sr of Greek. In eonc usion it may be said that tbe labor of tbe yrar has been satisfactory in the hlgbta degree; tbe present needs no olorlog, and tue future is auspicious. The work of tbe faculty Itm been faUbfo), earnest and, I trust, profitable. Fortunate, indeed, has tbe university been in tbe selection of a faculty and with our new and able president, who, as Gov. Heodrick remark d, "stands intellectually, a giant auong men," may we sot look for that hearty co-opjra'lon aud patronage whict neb an institution bo
richly deserves. Let the people of the state respond in word and in art. and tfceo
our Institution will soon become a rival of others of a national reputation. Mac. THE 8TATE UNIVERSITY. ALUMNI ENTERTAINMENT AMD RECEPTION COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES A GOOD ADDRESS Special Correspondence of the Sentinel. Bloomington, Indiana, June 14. I attended the alumni entertainment last night and found a brilliant company assembled in the university chapel. The resident alumni, especially Dr. McPbeeters, Messrs. Henderson, McCbord, J. H. Rogers, Gilmore. Mien, Harryman aud Sinders, deserve great credit lor making arrangements so ample for the com tort and enteittinment ot their guest. Tbe upper following tbespeeca and poem was a yery en) y able feast indeed, and was fully appreciated by the vast assembly thronging the spacious dining halls. Dr. MoPhee.ers, the master of ceremonies, made a pleasing welcome and congratulatory address. lie welcomed the visiting alumni aod congratulated everybody interested In tbe State University on tbe election of Dr. Moss to tbe presidency. He was greeted with an applau.ee that indicated a lively appreciation of his addrees. Dr. Moss gracefully thanked the aiumni for their RECOGNITION AND RECEPTION, and Introduced tbe orator of the evening, the Hon. Wm. McKee Dunn, of tne clas of 1832, Jadge advocate general of tbe United States army. Gen. Dann addressed tbe audience for two hours, closing with an interesting review of the history of local literary maters. The poem by Mr. Alfrei Harrjman, of tbis place, was an excellent one. I send you the programme ol to-day's commencement exercisns. The Bpeecoes are a little above mediocrity in style of ex preesion and delivery. The thoughts ol 11 tbe young ladies and gentlemen ar neatly and trimly rounded off, but are aomewbat lacking in originality. The performance Of MtfS Wilson, a bandaome, bloomiru, graceful blonde, was qiite witty. as thoroughly re-resbing aud was weii received. The speech ct Mr. Smith was closely listened to, and up to the hour ot tbis writing, 12 o'clock, Is the best performance furnished by tbe young men ol the class. Mr. Smith's delivery is quite attractive, and I regard him as a veiy promising young man. D. O. Spence. LEGAL COMMENCEMENT.
