We wouid be friends as true a e'er were man and man - I'd be a second David, and she Miss Jonathan. We liked each other, that was all, and quite enough to say; Ko we Just shook hands upon it In a business sort of way. We shared our sorrows and oar Joys; together hoped and feared; With common purpose sought the goal which young ambition reared; We dreamed together of the days, the dreambright clays to come; We were strictly confidential, and called each other "chum." And some day, when you've lots of time, Just drop a line to me." The words came lightly, gayly, but a gTeat sob Jast behind Rose upward with a story of quite a different kind. THE DAUGHTERS SACRIFICE. Mar j Goldthwait was sitting by the wellfilled grate in her father's drawing-room. It was on a cold erenlng in winter, and the wind howled mournfully around the street censers and through the narrow lanes and alleys. Mary was a pale, slim girl, but possessing a beauty which even the most fastidious could not have questioned. Her hair, which was of a deep, golden hue, shed a light from the soul Which only could have emanated from a source ot purity and worth, fcshe had seen eUht and twenty years of life, and yet she remained a maiden beneath her father's roof. A clcse calculator of physiognomy would have said that Mary bad some secret beart-grief that mads her look bo pale. So she had, though ierhap8 no one on earth aave fctrself kDew all her heart eecrtts. Rhe had lost a beloved mother when s'ig was twenty, and since that she had sen one brother and an elder sister laid away in the tomb. She sat now with her small hands clasped over her bosom, and the eyes turned downward till the long lashes lay like golden pencilicgs upou her cheeks. Near her, in his great arm chair, sat her father. He was a tall, slim man, whose head was white, and whose face was deeply furrowed by th9 hand of time. There were some kind marks upon bis features, and some hard, cold ones, but now he looks troubled and very unhappy. "Mary," he said, in continuation of a conversation already commenced, ''for eight and twenty yeire I have found a heme lor you and your every wish has been met and answered. Your good has been my highest aim and your peace and happ' nets my only joy. You are advancing in year?, and soon your father must leave you alone. But I I can not leave van at the mercy of the cold world. Now Ä good home is open to you and you must accept it. Men might call me selfish cauld they know all my motives, but I am sure you will not. A crisis has come a volcano has grown up beneath my feet. In a lew short days it must overwhelm me in utter ruin, if I be net saved. Mr. Smith has asked me lor your hand. He has seen you at church and watched you narrowly. He loveä you. lie is wealthy more wealthy than your lather was. And he holds tiotes of mine notes to the amount ol a hundred thousand dollars." "But your name ia not alone on these r.otf s?" gasped Mary. "No only the first four; but I am bolden lor the whole. Yet the quarter part cf that ia more than sufficient to ruin me." "And Mr. Smith makes my hand the equivalent?" 'Yes. Or I must say, be baa not said so. Bat he knows my situation and knowing it, has aaked for the hand of my child. Ah, Mary, it does seem to me that God has kept your hand until cow that it might be the means of lifting your old father up from ruiu. You have even rejected suitors whom I have favored ; but I do cot think you have rejected a better man than Mr. Smith." Ah, that old man had forgotten one i He had forgotten a bright-haired youth who laid hia heart at Mary's feet. But that was long years agoce, and his mind went cot back so far. "Now what shall I tell Mr. Smith?" "My heart is all broken and torn," she said gazing sadly at her father's lace, "but my hand la free. Tell Mr. Smith this. Tell him I will give blm my band to save my father, and forget not to tell blm that my heart is not in the trade, for I would not deceive bim." 1 "Ob, you will love him, Mary. He has promised tbat you shall have all you can ask for, and I know be will be kind." "I have said that I will marry blm," the fair maiden returned, "and so you may te 1 him. But you will only cruelly deceive j bim did you tell him no more. Tell him my father has cared for me and protected me through a weary life, and that cow I am ready to save tbat lather from ruin. Tell bim this, and then he shall know alL" "I shall tell him to come to-morrow evening, lor so he wishes. I know you will ba happy; be will make you one of the best of husbands. He is rich yery rich." "In what, my father?" The old man started at these words, for they were spoken very strangely. "In the goods of this world, and in honor ind manhood," he replied. .,.
not wish to worry her father. She knew that la soul was already tortured by misfortune and commercial calamity, and she would cot make ber stcrifice lor him unKrateful, by casting a shade of reproaoh on h'no. Ere long old Andrew Goldthwait allowed his thoughts to run in a more pleasing channel. The rain which had stared blm n the face was to be averted, and in bis soul he believed that his child would net Da one whit the less 'better off for the transaction. He knew Mr. Smith to be wealthy, and In bis heart he believed him n be a kind and honorable mac. He landed too, that be could look i t) and read his daughter's heart. Us thought she wept and sorrowed for the mother and brother and sister she bad lost, and that she objected to this match (cause she bad resolved net to marry. But be flattered himself that at the end 01 the first year of married life be should find her a happy wile. On the following evening Mary again s it bybe grate in t be drawing room. She was alone now, and her face more pale loan usual. But she waa calm, calm as the marble statute which stood near her. The outer door was opened and she heard the tread of heavy feet in the ball. Then the inner door opened and her father entered. Soe looked op and saw aaother man; it was he to whom she had promised her hand, the man whose money was to save ber parent. Mr. Goldthwait Introduced Mr. Smith. Mary arose and extended her hand. It was cold, but did not tremble. She looked up into his .face, and she saw a man of medium height, with a high brow, dark eyes, and neatly trimmed beard. He greeted ber politely and then took a seat. Some half an hour was spent in conversation, generally between the two men,
and then the remarks grew gradually lets, until a silence ensued. Nearly ten minutes elapsed before an other word was uttered, and the stillness was opressive, when the visitor broke the spell. "Miss Goldthwait," he said, In a low, soft tone, "you are, of course, aware of the object ot my visit here this evening, and I Know you will pardon me Ii l speak plainly." Mary looked up, but she made no reply. Tne tones of the speaker's voice were so kind and gentle tbat she began to pity bim. Sbe felt that be ought to go and find some wire who could love blm. "Your lather has spoken plainly with me," resumed Mr. Smith, "lie has told me tbat you have no heart to give, but that you will yet bo my wife. Yet he assured me that you will learn to love me in lime. I once thought tbat I should never love again, but the sight of your sweet face dispelled the illusion. I will tell you all, anl then you shall Judge whether I even have a heart lor you." Mary bad now fixed her eyes s tea Illy on the speaker, and ber features had assumed an eager, wistful expression. "Long years ago I loved a beautiful girl, and she loved me in return. I was young tben, and I only thought of love, and I did not dream that fate could crush my soul's dearest hope. That lair girl was all to me. I held ber In my soul as my very life, and not a thought had I of the future but 'twas of ber. And I knew that sbe loved me as well, for she bad told me so a hundred times. But a terrible crash came upon my joys. My Idol's lather was wealthy, and I was poor. He was a merchant I was only a clerk. When I told bim ot my love he epurned me from his door and bade me never enter it again. Ob, heaven, what a. wreck of soul was that! Who shall picture the utter midnight of tbe blasted and broken heart? Who shall tell its Wallings and its deep, dark griels? All crushed and broken down, I fled from the place where my love bad grown up, end in tbe heal and whirl of business 1 tried to forget my sorrows. Worldly fortune seemed to single me out as it see pecalfatorle. My wildest and most reckless transactions turned out well, and money seemed to fly out as if by magic from everything I placed my bands to. Thus passed away eleven years, and then I came to th:s city, where I settled down. That was one year ago. I saw you; 1 loved you ; you opened my crushed heart and let the tide of love forth. I asked the merchant again fcr his child, and and ' The speaker's lips trembled, bis bosom seemed heaving with some powerful emotion. "Mary," he said, in a breaking tone. "I have asked thy father, and he has told me yes. Will you Le mine!" The maiden bad no mere doubt. Years seemed to have passed like mag;c from the calendar ot the past; it seemed only yes terday that a loved youth told a tale of hia love, for since tben onlygriel had been hers, and grief was no more now. She sank forward, and the next moment sbe was clasped to tbe bOBom ot the man who for long years had possessed her heart. "James Smith l" gasped tbe old man, starting to his teet In astonishment. "Yes, sir," returned the young man, looking up through his tears, but yet holding the loved one in bis embrace. ''The James Smith who used to be my brother's clerk?" "Ye, sir, the very same. Do you retract your promise?" "No, no, no! On my soul no! Take my child take ber, and if you love ber, forgive her father." "Ah," replied the happy su!tor, as he led Mary to a seat, and tnen sat by her side and drew her head upon bis shoulder, ' if I forgive, then I must remember a wrong, and that will not do. Let us forget all of the past but its joys, and look to the future lor what duty and true love can give us. I am cow content." "And so am I," uttered the aged parent. "And what say you?" asked James, gazing lnts Mary's face. "Ah," she replied. In a tone too deep for mere passing emotion, "content were too poor a word to tell all I feel. God grant tbat I forget Him not in this great Joy." THE FOREIGN TRADE OF INDIA.
