Ibe demand for loans and discounts keeps well np to the supply of currency, and only strictly first class paper meets with favorab'.e recognition by the banks, and tbe lulingra'e or Interest is 10 per cent., though we hear of transactions to-day at 9 per cent. In tbe outside market there - is a large amount of paper offering, and private lenders are able to realize from 132 per cent, a month. Eastern exchange is more abundant, but still below the wants of business, and the counter rates are firm at 1-10 to 1 1 pre liium. : The value of city orders has undergone a sudden depreciation; they are now quoted at INDIANAPOLIS CLEARING HOUSE. Yesterday tbe local money market was fairly active, with an Increased demand for loans which was freely met, when coming from depofitors in good credit, at 8g9 per cent. It la proper to re mark that In general merchandise trade has been apathetic. Buyers are disposed to pox chase with more than usual caution, from the fact that all classes of consumers realize tbe necessity of prudeiice and economy, and are purchasing sparingly, and chiefly articles of prime necessity. ' In tbe department of dry goods a moderat trade la reported, and, as will be seen by our quotations, prices are down to bard pan. Still there are no Indications of a speedy reaction in price, and though 1 1 see or a almost lmpos slble, prlcea may go still lower. Tbe grocery trade baa been more than usu ally quiet daring the week, with a light decline in sugar and coffees. Tbe great variety of articles Included under this bead, and tbe fact that they enter Into tbe necessities of every family almost dally, Insures a liberal movement when quiet prevails in other departments. Notwithstanding this feature of the trade tbe demand has been below expea tation. In other departments, such as boots and shoes, hats and caps, hardware, Iron notions millinery goods, notions, drugs, can goods. confectionery, there are few changes of lm portance, and business is moving along with out Incidents of special impor tance. In all departments stocks are complete, and dealers, realizing tbe force of circumstances, are in a position to respond to tbe orders of buyers upon terms as favorable as can be obtained In any Western market. In produce we note a decline in eggs during tbe week, consequent upon largo receipts here and the demoralization of Eastern markets, where the bottom of the market seems to bave been knocked out. Tbe receipts of butter bave been large and prices are lower. Those who would sell their butter at anything approximating remunera tive prices must see to it that It is well made and nicely packed. New potatoes from tbe South and tomatoes and onions from the Bermudas, are on the market, but selling sparingly. - Seasonable vegetables are in fair supply, but are brought from a distance, which keeps them well up in prices and from general con sumption. S j far we bave no receipts of wool to report, and quotations are nominal. The probabili ties are that during the present month receipts will be large and prices fully established. Tbe Philadelphia Commercial List refers to the market tos follows: Tbe market continues in a very dull and un satisfactory condition, tbe manufacturers puren sing only Iro n hand to mouth, and prices ruling l to a cents per in lower closing nominal. ' Manufactured goods continue to croop in price, ana me prospfcts for an early Improvement in the trade are not encouraging. The strck of combing wools is considerably reduced, and prices are steady, but nne won are again lower. In the department of grain, we note special activity in corn, and sales during the week have been large, holders generally having worked off stocks and receipts, leaving the market to-day comparatively bare. In oats tbe demand has improved, and the outlook is more cheerful, as the season has arrived when feeders will preier oats to corn for their horses. There has been no quotable change In wbeat and the movement has been of limited magnitude. The argument is used, and It seems plausable, that the export and consumptive demand woud, before this date, have brought about an active movement. But such has not been tbe case, and it becomes difficult, therefore, to form satisfactory conclusions in regard to the Immediate future of the trade. In the absence of demand, holders are compelled to wait and watch, which thay are doing in this market with philosophical composure and plu k. ON 'CHANGE. The attendance to-day was unusually large and the meeting was animated. If transactions were not large there was a free Inter, change of views upon commercial matters, (11 bands seeming disposed to keep the business harness on and be prepared to pull when the lightning gives the word.
