Monday KvKMNfs, Jan. 21 There Is nothing in the money market throughout the country to challenge specl3l cemment. Ia Kastern money centers there Is complaint of too much money and tr.o little de mand. At this point and lu the W est generally the money Is stilt tied up la porfc and grain, chiefly lathe former, and It may be considered close. At the same time there is no pressing demand for money at this season, and business Isqu'etly movie j on without much oo-tside of the traffic In the great s'.anles. The last week showed & very fair railrosd traffic at ihls central point. In corn it was especially heavy, as t he following table shows: RAILROAD COMMENCE, iieceipts for the wtefe ending Jan. 22, 1S7": I 'onlSi btls .. 9.'-(i0 Wheat, bu ........ A few parties keep op a Blight Jever on Chicago's future, but the principal sensation is in noting what they might have done. Flour finds slow sale and wheat Is too poor in quality to count for much, anyway in this State. DRT QOODS. There is not much doing, as at this season the trelsotT. Something Is doing in the way of staple goods at low ratei, but the prospect Is hopeful for the sprint? trade. GROCERIES Trade Is inclined to qaiet, and thera are no symptoms of an ear y chioje. Merchants are by this ti me accustomed to moderate orders and light prcll:s. have cot expenses lo suit the business and, therefore, are by no means miserable. Coffees have for a week orten days past been more active, and dealers are pretty well supplied at the ruling rates, having sold out most of old Stock, purchased at higher figures before the first of the year; the market East is a little more quiet with freer sellers than early last week; prices are about the same as a few days since, cd local Agares are unchanged. Sugars are steady ; hard sugars firm, but the soft grades white are shaded from late rates; New Orleans sugar in good supply at "former prices. There is lees demand for domes tic cried fruits, bat a continued activity In prunes, which remain remarkably cheap. Coal oil firm at 11c by carload in Cleveland, and 13o to lie here, in small lots. New Orleans molasses, fine and sound, is growing stronger and must advance ; New Orleans quotations of !5th are 5Cc for prime and S2c for choice grades. Demand steady. Syrups daU CORN, which has been the leading object of Interest in trade circles, has held up to about 40 cents, but was confessedly weak at that figure. The bad weather and the Illimitable mud In the country will do something to check the moves ent for a few days. PROVISIONS have been in a dubious condition and In spite of nerve and a bold front the market has settled a little for the last few days, and buyers are shy. The following tables give a comprehensive showing oi this immenslve interest at thin time: 1 PROGRESS OF PORK PACKING. COMPARATIVE FIGURES OF 1S74 AND 1875. The latest estimates given by the Cincinnati Price Current Is that the total packing of the West will fall ihort about 730,000 in numbers as compared with last season, while the Increase la weight will be equal to about 330,000 of last year's weight, thereby reducing the shortage to 60C.OQQ of last season's weight. The quality of fresh arrivals is reported as excellent, and the yield of lard very large. There Is a fair consumptive demand far product, but orders are generally limited, ta f rices that axe uasaUsfac
tory to packers. Speculators act .with much caution, and prefer waiting for further developments. It is thought by many that tettled, cold wea her will Increase receipts of bogs. The stocks of lard reported are veiy large, audit mar be difficult to advance prices.
REVIEW OP THE HOME MARKET. Monday Evxkiko, January 24, 1878. There was a persistent disagreement between J buyers and sellers on charge, so that the call board, which was well supplied with both offers and bids, developed only a single transaction of one car rump pork at f 17 per barrel. The sales reported by private negotiations were not large, as the list shows. But there was, nevertheless, a tendency to business, and the probabilities are fair for some activity during the week. Corn was steady, with an improved feeling over the close of last week . Provisions were lower, and buyers were reluctant. At the Fame time holders are not satisfied to accept of the market, and will hold sometime before unloading at present rates. llrgs were active and steady at 7 10 for the outhide figures. Egus are one cent lower, under the pressure of 1 ,w markets In New York. Wholesale trade very quiet and steady. tALE3.
