Mokday Evf.sing, Jan, The Ism ja of the Weekly Sentinel on Moil3y morning admits of a consideration of last week's buslnes 1 to the lose of Saturday. The week was mora ei icmraglng than any prectding one for month j on the Board of Trade. Among whole sale m erebants tt was necessarily rather c,ulet except . in groceries and farm produce. In the elty jollections were pretty hard to make. Re tali d ealers In family supplies found a good deal Cfdlt ficulty In raising money on the piles of bills sent out. Yet the tendency is towards a lUtle re lief. It will not e long before money will begin to f aw back to the banks somewhat. A good authority on the subject of the general conditio a sd trade of the country makes this hope fuL remark: That the active surplus or capital employed In the mercantile trade of the country Las been shown to be In larger proportion to the extent of business done, and to the amount of ex 1st Wig liabilities than at any time la onr previous bis'ory.and Is In excess of that of any other country in me woriu uaving a proportionate extent cf Internal trade. That this Is the ease Is made obvious by the absenca of anything like general disaster among toe traders in numer ous branches, notwithstanding they have suffered intensely for so long a time from the de pression and lntertifeot the period. It la true that the failures of the year are numerous, Important, and, in many cases, significant; but ihev have been confined to no distinctive trades; they bear a very small proportion to the number in eacn Drancn or Dusiness; ana aoove all. In many eases some circumstance are noticeab'e, Involving departure from legitimate business principles, which would result, sooner or later, lu min, even in tb best of times. Falure resu t'ng from Individual indiscretions In business, ana frsdulent atteaipts to make money by compromising when U gltlniate nnsiness H dull, shoull not be regarded asiudicatio sofa wautof capital 'nlraue generally, nor a lack of ability to s-and the pressure of the times, long continued and severe though the strain may be. The marked feature of the pa&t week which beads the list In business events was the move ment in corn, with prices which ru:ed very steady nntll Saturday, when there was an ad mltted decline of one-half cent, the trade at this point wore an oneouraglng aspect, especially as the receipts Levewere considerably higher in proportion than at Chicago, on soiae days act ually exceedlrg the receipts mere, t-nouki tue country roads not thaw out, this movement will keep on nnchecked for Nome time. We are on the Baltimore line of commerce, and the following paragraph from the Baltimore Trade Review explains something of the activity here, though much of our corn goes to rmiadeiphta. lüe Keview ays: Ttaefirft week In te year opened quite hopefully In business circles, though as a rule trade does not move with any dtgree of freedom, wita the single exception oi corn, there being a good demand for the cereal for foreign shipment, ana considerable sales have been made for that purpose. The large fleet of vessels which have recently arrived, have lowered rates of freight to a figure which have induced shippers tosend their orders in promptly with the hope of securing full advantage which may be gained through this means. Large quantities of grain are on the way for this port for foreign export, and at present lUltimore heads the list a the largest reetiveraud exporter of corn in the country. FLOUR AND WHEAT have continued the same cs at our last reviewVery dull and qnlet. But for the last two or three days wheat has shown some degree of firmness and considerable excitement in speculative circles. At the last moment, on Saturday, wheat in Chicago made a sudden start and marked SI 02 Tor March delivery. There has been almos none at all offered here, except by sample lor lots, outside the state. There is really some demand at low prices. THE PROVISION TRADE has bet n in a very hopeful way for most of the "week. On Friday there was a weakening under the general reports of a fair hog crop, but on no day have the prices receded, though buyers stood on In a state of expectancy. But Saturday closed up with a firm and strong feeling in the provision market, and a buoyant feeling on the part of holders, or at least a very bold faee, however desirous they may have been to VU at market figures. Cplnlonsasto the future are as varied as the weather. All agree that hogs are conslde 'ably heavier this year than last, and that the number picked this season will be largely short of last, while the pounds may make up alarg part of the deficiency in numbers. Orders from consuming districts are ample to take ail the stcfT ofltred at current prices. Speculators operate with caution, and fear to take hold free'y until f-irther developments show the way clearer. EGGS AND POULTRY. The past week was about the only one of the -u-L.tr suitable for the purposes of dealers in dressed poultry, and they improved It with un wonted eagerness. A good deal was hane'ed and doubtless with some advantage. Egg have not stopped rolling in at any time, and the demand has at no time been npo the average at this season. So Eastern dealers assert. Buyers here have taken all that came, and determined to trust to luck for a safe delivery. But the close of the week shook their nerve considerably, and it may be that the price will suffer another crowding down this week. Other lines of ousiness nave offered no occa sion for remark. Times are hard and paying situations are in great demand, yet few seem to be suffering, the mildKessof the weather being a great relief to the poor. REVIEW OF THE HOME MARKET. Mondat Evening, January 17. The soft and damp weather of yesterday and to-day Is really an Injury to trade. Country roads are almost Impassable, which checks corn hauling, and interferes with 'the business of the season . Business on the Board of Trade was fair, for Monday very good. The movement of corn at this point is very heavy, exceeding that of Chicago. Receipts are running up to nearly 100,000 bushels daily, and the elevators ure doing a good business. Since Saturday evening over 117,000 bushels were received here by rail and the prospect is for an increating volume this week. The pricejwas today a little weaker than on Saturday, 41c being the outside for free on board corn. Wheat was strong In Chicago and c higher than the close Saturday night. Provisions were reported quiet to day, but the fact is the sa'es reported and unreported amount to a heavy trale. Over 700 tons were shipped within the la'-t twenty-four hours, or a million and a half pounds. Nothing new in the channels of mercantile trade. SALES.
