WEEKLY BUSINESS REVIEW. MONET MATTERS. Tuesdat Evening, Jan . 4, 1876. The banks still report the cioset stringency. As yet there Is no change in the Udo of circula tion, and It is next to lmp3slpie ror we outside bonower, uo matter what his paper, to obtain any funds at present. In g-neral. n the con dition of butne9, the New York Tribune saysr The year which closed yesterday, and is fol lowed by a close ho lday to-day, has not resulted in that return of business prosperity for the country which was hooefully predicted one year ago. The effects of a decade of extravagance in living of the construction of thousands of miles of railway la advance of the business necessities of the country, of over pioductlon. of wi:d BpecniAtlnnlnall directions, of peculation on the nart of officers of -corporations acd municipal and state governments as well as of the government of the United Htates, resulting In grinding taxation, have been loo lar-reacning io i-e over come by ordinary efforts at economy and retrenchment in so short a space of time as two years. fo we most cheerfully wait and work and hope for the good time coming, bflng suie now oniyot the f.tct that in point of time we are one year nearer to general prosperity than we were cn the 1st of January, i7C. THE GRAIN TRADF, which, next to pork Is the leading interest at this season, is dull. While there is something doing, it can not be held that a movement of the grain Is taking plaee generally. Agaln.it must be admitted that this city does not hit the mark in some way to balld up a trade at this point. The grain co-nmerce is a through busings, the cars which bear away the products of the region naturally tributary to Indianapolis go past without stopping: certainly without unloading, and the handling of grain here 1 petty and insignificant considering all the con dl'.ions and circumstances. Cora has improved its demand so:newhat, but there is not much done in trade, and prices are weak. Nor is there muc a prospect of an im provement. 41 cents was the outside figure to day and the price may be considered one to two rents below on) week ago. Wheat is In demand at the mills and, strangely enough, the inquiry is for poor grades commonly cslkd g:umptai?. There is not enough of this to be bad. The secret of thin lies in the fact that the depression of price oa such grain Is larger in proportion than the 1m In wheat Jt gives a better margin of profit to the miller than a good sound article. provisions 9 are not just tow catting much of a figure in trade. They are qmet and waiting for the outcome of the paklrg season. Hogs maintain about the same figure which they took at the be ginning of the season, S6 7537 00. They have stoxlatthat range with unusual uniformity The produce trade has been depressed every way for the week past. Weak markets at the East, warm weather and light demand at home have tlrown buyers upon the alternative of carrying their (stocks and taking chances lor the future. Katter, eggs and poultry are all dull and slow as was never known at this season Of merchants and grocers little is to be said for the pant week. Holiday festivities and bal ancing the books have employed their attention and they have not paid much attention to trade, Still, business is satisfactory and the prospect Is hopeful for the coming year.
