THE INDIANA STATE SENTINEL. WEDNESDAY JAUAEY 5, 187G.
It rx ay ba that this question Is only brought lorward pending the nomination, and that after the nominee is decided it will do to make It one of the issues, and not tbe sole "vital Issue." Bat let us enter briefly upon an examination of the merits of this bloody shirt "basinofls, sickening and loathsome as it is, nd see what it proposes as an appropriate Issue of the political contest of the centennial year. Stripped of all extraneous matter and exhibited in its hideous ugliness, It means simply that the American people shall be arrayed against ach other in deadly bate and bittern ss. Ten yeara have passed away since the moke of the last battle of internal strife disappeared, und the sunshine of peace shone over the whole land. Year by year the contending parti s hire approached nearer to each other with friendly greeting. Amicable relations, social and commercial, have been restored. The tetter thought o! the Southern people has been addressed to tho arts of peace and prosperity, and amid even the desolation and ruin ol iniquitous legislation, with forbearance and patience, they bare at length risen out of their troubles, and assumed a relation of equality with the rest of the states. But now, just as the country is about to bury out of eight the scenes of the past, and enter upon the centennial year in peace and good will, this wretched croaking is heard, grating the harsh dUcord ot enmity and revealing the eataaic spirit of bate. A more diabolical outrage upon decency, propriety, charity and brotherly kindness could hardly be defined, in decent word?, than the Journal has proposed. And lor whose good? Simply to make aa issue that will embody Mr. Morton's political i leas, that he may thereby, of neces?i'y, become the candidate for the presidency. Politically bankrupt upon every other principle that his engaged tie attention of statesmen, Morton preserves a constancy in Cherishing hatred to the masses of the white peop'eot theSrath, and now be strives to stir up hatred all over the country, to arouse, embitter feelings that have loDg been displaced by manly consideration and Christian Courtesy. There is no other prominent man n the country whose cheek would not Crimson with shame in making such a proposition as Morton advances as the basis of his policy: no other paper so devoid of true patriotism a to advocate it, save the Journal. All right thinking, patriotic citltens can net t ut despise both.
Z5r. Landers Qreeneastle Speech. In toe Sentinel of this morning we publish the full text of the speech o' tbe Honorable Franklin Landers, delivered at Greenc-iitle on Tuesday evening last. Tbe speech was pronounced extemporaneously, and was phonographically reported for tbe Sentinel. Mr. Landers is a man of strong common senee, and has the faculty of expressing himself in plain and forcible language. The speaker uses plain vords to express bis ideas, and no one who heard the addrtss or reads it in prlut will b) at a loss to understand his position on the jrreat question of the day. lie does not use words to conceal bis Ideas, but to express them, and we venture the assertion that the speech we print this morning will meet the approbation of a large majority of tbe people ot his district. In his race for congress Against General Coburn, Mr. Landers proved himself able to take care of himself and to protect the interests of the party Which nomina'ei him, and in his Greencattle speech he gives evidence of his ability to grapple with questions of the most complicated natuie. Tbe sime sagacitj that has made him so successful in bus'.nexs is apparent in his treatment ot the question be so ably and thoroughly dis cusses, and those who do not know it will yet learn that he is as competent to discuss the affairs of state as to has proven blmeelf to be in the management of his private interests. In the speech we publish this morning Mr. Landers does not deal in glittering generalities, but in stubborn facts. He daes not depend upon fine spun theories to elucidate his positions, tut in statistics and historical precedents. When he takes bold of a position be does not leave it until he surrounds it with such a cordon of facta and logic that his conclusions are Irresistible. There are many men who would have discussed the financial question in more flawing rhetoric and ornate language than Mr. Landers has done, but there are lew, indeed, who would have brought to bear upon the subject stronger arguments or facts more forcibly presented tfcaa appear in tbe speech we print this morning. We shall attempt no epitome ot tbe speech. It trea s of a subject that interests every man In the country, and Mr. Landers' views upon this subject, a ad tbe reasons be baa for entertaining them, are worthy of tbe consideration of every man in Indiana. Therefore, every reader of tbe Sentinel should carefully read and consider this speech of tbe representative In congress from tbe central district of our state. ScaaUr Horton'i Breaches. . In its leader nom'nating Senator Morton for tbe presidency, the Journal says the senator "has maid many a breach where others dare not follow." We will mention a few ot these "breaches:" He broke from the democratic party when be thought he could win office by so doing He broke through the lines of elective
franchise by voting whole regiments of foreign soldiers for himself when a candl date for office, and Inspired bis friends to commit other crimes against tbe parity of the ballot box. Ho has unhesitatingly broken tbrongh every line of political consistency by abandoning any policy he has advocated when it was bis personal or political interest to do so. He is now attempting by his consolidation resolutions to make a breach in tbe constitution of the United States; and by bis Mississippi resolutions, to make a breach in the rights guaranteed to tbe states. The Journal is right in saying "many re.fused to follow him." There must be some obstruction set up by
the people through which this great warrior can not break. There is a rising tide of virtue, morality and honesty in thin country, now commencing to flow, that will throw up such a barrier as this strong man strong only in wicked power can not destroy. It will stop his course; it will act as a breik-water against his malignity, and be an insurmountable obstacle to bis farther political advancement.
Tbe Republican State Convention. A significant article appears in tbe Journal touching tbe postponement of tbe Republican State Convention from tbe time heretofore determined upon, tbe 22J ot February, until after the adjournment of congress. The policy of this movement is so p'aln that we wonder tbe writer of tbe article did not come out and tell tbe whole story. Tbe plan ol having two state conventions is simply for tbe purpose of booatlng,up Morton for the presidency, while it avoids the necessity of making any platform that might prejudice his interests in the national convention, or anticipate unfavorably to the interests of tbe Republican party tbe possible action of a third party in this state on the finance qnestion. Tbe fact is, he Republican party dare not assemble in convention in this state and make a platform or nominate a ticket, and this is well known to the party leaders. But Mr. Morton urges his indorsement for the presidency, and this the leaders do not dare to refuse. Hence the plan of the Journal to have tbe convention as enable here on the 221 of February and appoint delegates to tbe national convention form a state central committee, and "transact other business that can properly be done at that time." Whattne other business is needs no further suggestion than that made above to indorse Mr. Morton for the presidency. Then, when this is done, the delegates can return home, and after it is known wbat tbe financial situation is, and what policy tbe party is to pursue, they can return and make a platform in accordance therewith and nominee state candidates, without prejudicing Mr. Morton's interests. But this could not D9 done cow. Tbe party, In tbe face of tbe sentiment of tbe people of this state, could not take a position favorable to tbe resumption bill, and they could not resolve against it and not Imperil Mr. Morton's chances with tbe bard money Republicans of tbe East. It is aa unfortunate situation and there is no way out ot it but to bold two conventions, one to indorse Morton, and the other to do tbe proper work ot tbe convention. What do tbe people of Indiana think ot a party that feara to assemble and assert its principles, Wbat do tee Republicans of tbe state think of being broogh to tbe capital to simply indorse Morton and go borne, thereby confessing that they have no principles that will conflict with bis aspirations for tbe presidency? Wbat does the Bucuanan party think of this plan to anticipate and Bave the thousands of Republicans of the state, like those the Evansville Journal represents, wbo will not trust the Republican party on tbi3 question of greenbacks? Surely this plan brings a reproach upon the p trty, and will bring the party into contempt if it is pursued. As we read the Re publican state exchange?, we have not discovered any special clamoring for two conventions. The plan has doubtless bad its origin here, though first published at Kokomo lot effect. There is a large body of Republicans in tbia state who do not sympathize with Morton, and tbe poatofflce affair here has cot decreased tbe number of nis opponents in that party. They rejoice to see his power broken, and they will not be dragooned into this sort of toadyism. Neither will the green back Republicans of this state, who now propose a third party, be in great baste to coaletce with a time-serving policy pro posed by the Journal. If Mr. Morton desires the indorsement of the Republican convention, let him state his position on this question. If be wishes to go before the national convention as a candidate, then let tbe country know where be 6tands. Especi ally should be let tbe Republicans of this state know. Bat tbis donble convention plan savois of a fraud that tbe Republicans of this state will hardly Indorse. The Republican Convention. Tbe Sentinel, a few days ago, referred to the change ot base of the Republicans of this state, and suggested that tbe plan was concocted here, and tbe article published first In tbe Kokomo Tribune, to be indorsed by tbe Journal, and thus to go out to the party in tbe state. Tbe Tribune neatly acknowledges tbe matter in tbe following: The Indianapolis Sentinel, referring to the proposed change of arrangement about the Republican state convention, says the article was ftrobably gotten up at Indianapolis but pub lshed at Kokomo first for effect. While the in sinuatlon was a very mean one. it la much nearer the truth than the Sentinel mppos d H was. The senior editor was at Indianapolis all of last week, lie wrote the article In his room and read It to one member of the United State Court Jury, his room-mate. Ho other peroa knew it was written and it was malted to tbe Trlbane, not being shown to any other person. The Sentinel ought to know that the Tribune is managed by the editors hereof that It la not a limber-Jack to te pulled by either candidates or politicians. The Sentinel accepts the information con tributed in the concluding sentence, snd acknowledges itself fully advised ol tbe fact that the Tribune is not a " limber-jack, and Is not to be pulled by candidates or politicians. But still we can not help say lng that If we told a truth we can not see why tbe insinuation was so " mean" unless the scheme Itself was mean. The citizens ol Eaton are greatly exercised over the very mysterious disappearance of Miss Mollie Foreman, aged 18 years, daugb tor of ' one of the most respected citizens About three weeks ago she leit ber home to piyavlsit to ber brother at Dunkirk, Ind No uneasiness was felt or any inquiries made until tbe past lew days, when it ws ascertained that she bad never been at ber brother's bouse. Tbe river has been dragged for mi los and tbe woods thoroughly searched without effect. Allen Innkertoo 'of unioag has been engaged to diuover ibe where abouts ot tbe missing girl, but basnet jet succeeded in findlnu her. living or dead Tbe parents of tbe joang'ady are deeply afflicted and in a state of terrible anxiety

PLACE WHERE BURGLARS ARB SAFB REVIVLNO A STATE SCANDAL. A Washington special to the Chicago Tribune ot yesterday says: The attention of the court will be called to-morrow to im posant disclosures In regard to the character of the jury before whom Green, a Baltimore barber, was recently tried for falsely representing himself to be Mr. Eades, a wealthy citizen of Georgetown, and thus, by giving worthless ballt securing the release cf the burglar Snyder, who vai at that time in jail. It is stated that tbe foreman ofthat jury, notwithstanding the efforts of the prosecution to prevent its being packed, bad been a Pennsylvania convict, and that evidence will be produced trom tbe war department to show that, during tbe war, this fact was pleaded in order to enable him to escape military service, he having been drafted. The unblushing manner in which other furors i crsonally congratulated the prisoner, immediately after his acquittal, proves beyond question that they, too, were certainlv unlit for the positions they held. The w"to!e history of tbis case adds another to the rapidly-accumulating evidences that justice in tbe District of Columbia has become solemn mockery. Snyder, the burglar, in whose interest the Green conspiracy was arranged, was believed to have had a hand in THIS HARRINGTON SAFB BURGLARY, by which It was attempted to turn tbe tide or district investigation in 1S74 In lavor oftberlng by falsely accusing an innocent and respectable citizen ot felony, and manu facturing evidence to convict him. and it was generally supposed that, if he were al owed to remain in fail or be tried and con victed, he would tell all he knew about that notorious case and imDlicate certain prominent citizens of tbe district. In order to prevent tbis, a conspiracy for tbe relief of Snyder on false ball wis entered into and carried but. After tbe fact that the signer of the bond was net Eade, as be pretended to te, was discovered, a detective was sent to Baltimore to bring Green, who was suspected of being tbe person who had signed the paper, to Washington, and after his exainhmtfoc, in which those persons wi, wtre suspected ot having been conxr.lrntnrs with him principally partlc't a il. tit- whs allowed to return. Tbi fact rcuiiuibg known, a special police investigation whs made, wbich re sulted in I be rearrest nt Otceu aod bis in dictment, beeidH tbe indictment of several others, some of whciu held illcial positions. is is now Deueved tnat, to tare bim and ic directly to save tbe saie-burelarv con spirators, tbe jury wss packed, and that tbe most important pait of the testimony on the strength or which be was acquitted was perjury, and was manufactured in tuia city and Baltimore. These facts show an alarm ing state ot affairs wbich should command tee immediate attention of both bouses ol congress. It is proper to say that no bus picion rests upon any ot tbe judgSrn con nectlon with these matters, and that tbe charge of Judge McArtburin tbeGreenc&sa was very strong aeaibst tbe prisoner. There were two Chinese shops at How land Flat, Sierra county, Cal., a few- days ago, but one of the merchants placed a, tenpound cartridge under tbe establishment of his rival and now enjoys a monopoly 1 tbe trade.
