RISING MAN. Xlght Feet High and Still on the Rise.
A TALI tknnesseean. KBARLT UQBT FEET HIOH AT LAST AOCOCJTTS AKD BTILL CLIMBING A OIAUT WITH INDIA KÜBBRK JOINT UTTLK WALKS OF TWIN TT FOUR MILKS. Ibe Franklin, Tennessee, correspondent f the New York Sunday Sun writes: In ill Res of the 'world a departure Irom the lormal growth of man has excited the carllaity of every one. Princes delighted to kare the gre atest extremes ol mankind In their retinues), and the country was easrerly ransacked for both giants and dwarfs. Even the sacred h'a'orlin Mose, t bough bat lew nanus are voucbstfed to oa from those eaily times, did cot heeita'e to end down to later ages the oamea ot giants , of those days Dean Swift baa immortalized bis name by the most extravagant travesty of any agw, in the - production ot the wonderful adventures of Gulliver among the Ltliputlans and tbe Brobdlgnagians. We all remember with what pride Frederick the Great exhibited his regiment of giants to bit royal visitors, and how difficult for blm to procure them. Bat In all my rejearcbea I have yet to find parallel to tne case brought to ray notice laat summer lo Terry county, Tennessee. It often happens tea, ca'ure either too scon arrests her woik or harries it ap too rapidly, thus forming tbe dwsrl or giant, and tbia is easily! plained. Tbe dwarf aimply stops growing, and the assimilative organs of the giant work more rspidly than usual, but atill be Is a g'aot at the customary age of an adult. Bat tbis Is not the case with Jsmes Horner, tbe Tente aee giant. Ha exhibits within himself A Dl? ARTVK FROM HATCBX entirely abnormal and singular. I will describe my visit to him: Last summer business called me to Linden, tbe county seat of Perry, and while there I met with Elder P. A. Whit well of the Baptist (Hard-shell) Cbureb. In conversation with him one day as to the peculiarities of bis county, be mentioned smongotber things the existence ol James Horner, who, he said, "was a giant, but be was not always one' James Horner, tbe deacon continued, was a citizen of Perry county, one of a family ot eight children, none of whom bad exhibited any unusual traits. At eighteen years be was a well grown man. six feet higb. and weighed 180 pound. At 21 be was eix inches taller and weighed two hundred and ten pounds. He a ei to notice aiy growth after that, until be wai twenty-tour J ears old, and then only by tbe stuallnees of is clothe, and be then measured In bis atocklngi six fees nine inches. Since then be is now tbirty-one years of age bebrs attained tbe height of seven feet nine lncbo and Is still growing, this being an increase of about two inobes annually. Nome yea s be grows m ire and some less, bat thin is bis average. This was so great a marvel that I determined to see tbe giant and Elder Wfcitwell kindly oneeatel to accompany me. So on tbe morning of July 24, 1875, we started early from Linden to tbe mouth of the Cy- ' press, where HB LIVED WITH HIS FATHER, Lolng unmarried. The morning was bright, and on tbeee highlands was pleasantly cool. We rode through tbe "Barren," as It is called, fer a few miles. The country, though 300 or 400 feet above tbe general height ot Middle Tenceuee, is level, and thickly covered with oak, and an undergrowth of Blackjack, that made it a favorable haunt during tbe war of deserters from each army, and many a deel of blood and rapine was enaoted among Its festoeesee. This is termed tie "Rhine" of Tennessee, and is only valuable tor its timber. We soon descended into tbe gorge, and here a limpid stream struggle! through banks ot gravel, jumping from one aide of the gorge to tbe other, the road bed often being in the same track. A thick growth of alders, fringe trees and smoke trees bordered the branch, while the steep sidoi of the hills were covered with shrub, honeysuckle and po'son Ivy a species of laurel. They were in lull bloom, and a more gorgeous sight never presented Itsell to my eye. Tbe lollago ot tbe ivy Is a deep shining gre3n, and every bush is profusely covered with tbe moat beautiful flowers ot every hue, from the purest white to tbe deepest crimson and purple, and all Intermediate tints. Magnificent springs gushed from the gravelly beds on each side ol tbe road. Intensely cool, clear and bright, verily nature was compensating the poverty ot the land with exuberant splendor. Tbis waa tbe head of Cypress creek. It gurgled along, jumping down tiny waterfall, running against bugs bowlders, gathering volume from many spring?, and the gorge gradually widened tu to a valley, and tben patches on either side with log cabius began to border the road. THH GIANT'S HOME. At last no approached a cabin like all the rest two pens of logs and an open passage between; and tbi?, I wts lcfoimed, was our destination. On the opposite side of tbe road a row of log huta were used as cribs and a'ables, and a huge woodpile obstructed the road. In ana wer to our halloo a number of cars tan off, barking, and an old lady came into tbe passage, aod, alter silencing the dogs, invited us to "lite." Hitching oar horte to tbe fence corners, we went In, and, on lb? Btieogth ot Brother Wbitwell's popularity, we received a warm welcome. Tbe old lady Informed us tbe "ole man and Jim" were hauling wood, but would soon return. Shortly a grcaolcgox cartcame in vlew,wUn tbe "ole man" sitting sideways on tbe tongue, and Jim on top of tbe wood. They drove slowly tip, and Jim Jamped to tbe ground, and as hi huge carcass struck it he doubled up like a boxwood rule, and then up hi ungainly form rose until he seemed really a gUnt of the first water. He came slowly shoffliDSC and shambling to tbe bouse, and as he walked be swung his long, ape-like arms back and forth at If pulling himself along by aa invisible cable. I bad ample time, ai be came leisurely up, to observe blin;andas much as I bad beard ot blm, I was not prepared for his appearance, lie waa Indeed immens?. II Id body was cot much longer than usual, aad hi bead waa almost swallowed up by h'.s broad, r-quare shoulder", acd he bad quite a stcop ween he walked but tben BIS LEOS WERE PRODIGIOUS, and his arms reached fully to bis knees. Ills features ware long, vacuous and rough; hU hair a dirty yellow; and, indeed, bis whole appearance denoted an effort on tbe part ef nature tu give s'ze at the erst of intellect. Af'or greeting, the orjact of our visit wan sta'er!, and tbe giant tearrcl lather flattered that we bad come to vu.it In lt. lie wai evidently good-natured, aid whs, f af.erward learned, ratber a iavorite la Il reiiihb i bocd. He showed us a place oa tfco wall hflre bis various measure rnents h I rvwn rra-ked with chalk, and tbo date of la-o measure vrai ocpesite, ruccly but plainly rra-kcJ. The first and love&C was when at etbteen joim of ago it was six foet, and then at tweuij-ono it was as tcfrre stated. Tbe narks weielrom s to alt loch to ai inch apart, tbe last having been taken about two months previous. Ai my request be s'oxl up, and I accurately measured blm, and I fjund that within tbe two months past be bad increased bis belebt
just one-half Inch, which I noted on tbe wall In pencil, with tbe date, July 24, 1875. HE ROLLED CF HIS PANTALOONS, and his shanks were blraply Immense, and b'a knee joints were extremely large and bungling. I took a careful measurement of bis various lengths. His bead to top ot shoulders, was eight inches; from shoulder to top hip joint, two feet three Inches; thence to center ot knfes, two feet two and onebatf inch's, thence to tbe floor, two feet and eight inefce, making. tbe enormous aggregate of seven feet ' nine and one-half inches. From tbe shoulders to tbe tin of bis Augers, was four feet six Inches. What a magnificent specimen of bumanlty he would have been had be been proportionally large. But truth compels me to a different 'version. In fact be was ah If made of India rubber stretched out to a huge length. He ought to have weighed at least 300 pounds, but be only weighed 233 pounds. In consequence of tbis want of conformity be was excessively awkward, lank and1 gawky. Only one quality did bo possess In a large degree, and that was his ability to walk. He could stoop forward at a be aw angle, and start off In bis awkward shuflilng gar, that rivalled any horse. He thought nothing of walking' to Linden, 12 miles, and back, to dinner. He I, a before stated, SI years and a lew months old, and is still growing. He fcas never been out ot Perry county. I suggested tbe idea ot an exhibition to blm, but he seemed averse to publicity. RAISING- THE DEAD. THE WAY IT IS DONK IN SOUTHERN INDIANA. WHOLKSALK BOOT SNATCHING AN INDIANA POTTER'S FIELD KI6HTLT BOBBED OF ITS DEAD PHASES OF THB HIDEOUS TRADE. The Evansville Journal Is credited with tbe following grave comments on a Southern Indiana enterprise: We live upon each other. A careful Investigation of the philosophy of life discloses that when one man rises above the dull level of bis fellows, there is some unfortunate devil in tbe antipodes who is proportionately depressed. This is an elastic nature that we have been fettered wilb, and where a pile risea to majesty tbe materials are from tbe tase, and leave a rude bole behind. So It is that when one man out ot fltty ceases to work, the forty -nine woik harder In proportion. So if La tbat our health is protected and our lives prolongs! by tbe shortening of tbe life of tbe physician who saves us. So it is that tbe bodies of our Mends serve as mounting-steps for our rise and success. For this principle tbe bodies of the dead are stolen for dissection, ttat fceilth may prevail, though desecration brings tbe fortunate end about. Hat we come to tbe subject of dissection, rrie Argus, oa yesterday, contained an article upon a suspicion that bung odorous upon tbe air about tbe medical college. It may be that the affiir is a misapprehension. Tbe dissecting room proper Is not located in tbe college. But with this we have not to deil. A horrible hint comes to our reporter a blot amounting to a certain assertion that the stealing ot bodies from the cemeteries of this city bas become almost a wholesale enterprise. Thcs who have loved ones burled need not fear, however, fir there is a certain sense of propriety maintained, and tbe bodies snatched aU'come from the potter' field. Tee unfortunate, unknown poor, who are carted, unwept, to a public grave, are .those who furnish the dissecting kafe with material. There are rone who feel disposed to object to tbia Even the officers of the law are indisposed to make tbe detection and punishment oi body-snatchers s portion of their occupation. THB MEDICAL SCHOOLS MUST HAVE SUBJECTS, and the friends and unknown are, by common consent, y leide 1 up as the proper material. But it becomes a crime, abominable to contemplate, tbat tbe obtaining ot bodies for this purpose should be made a business, and that a regular system of robbing graves and lurnlshlng bodies to different adjacent towns should have found an abiding place here. One who is in tbe situation to know, inform u that there U little doubt Dut tbat the bodies ot tbe poor are regularly stolen immediately alter burial, and tbat very tew corpses of pauners remain twenty-tour boura buried. Tbe pauper whose lifeless corpse has gone to its mother earth In a day, almost iej;ularl.v ornaments tfco dissection table at ntgrt. With tbe fall of darkne-8. tbe vandal appears and tbenewmsde gravels quickly despoilel ol its mortal treasure. It requires no art to make the disturbed sod unsuspicious. Tbe clods of a new made grave are easily counterfeited. "And what become of tbe bodies?" A ride in a spricg cart and to the dissecting room, and there science finds its consolation for disobeying the law. "And then?" And then cut up into indistinguishable pieces, tbe body cast Into a convenient aewer, and tbence into tbe river. Ahl what a morsel lor tbe fiibl But it la only a fair turn about, and sooner or later tbe tss comes home to tbe table. Wby not then advertise them at tbe dining places, aa "man-led flsb," as we ad verthe "corn-fed oys'ers?" This is not an article drawn for a borror or lor a sensation, but founded on wbat is known to be an absolute fact, "It is not a rare occurrence" added o r Inform ant, "that tbe bodies of tbe dead paupers never re ten tbe grave." Dying in out-of-the way hovels, uncarei for, It is aa easy matter to STRIKB A BARGAIN FOR TBK WORTHLESS MORTALITY. A very shrewd outlook is alwaya kept for subjects. Only a week or so ago an unfortunate woman died, who bad no friends aad whose husband had deserted her. A regular order for her but Ul was ismed, we understand, by the proper officer. But rumor came hurriedly along and whispered tbat .be body wa never buried. Tbe busbaud, whose aöection terrae J to have lu a measure returned with ter death, insisted upon knowing, aod with determination presented himself tefore all tbe officers and trace I tbe body to tbe undertaker. Tben be sought the sexton of tbe cemetery, who swore tbe body bad bte a burled. But tte grate was not examine!. Who knows bow many grave may be lying empty to-day! Around Lo many mounds bave we trod with almost sympathetic lightre, onknowing tbat no sacred dust hallows the humbler dirt! While upon tbia eubjec.we may relates story thowlcg that comedy lurks -even in tragedv, that tbe echo of laughter penetrates even to the grave. Soar, tmi a soil is not necessary to ttne when, nor even where a certain physician was detailed to receive aod lake charge ot a subject .encased for thai evening. About 11 o'clock a wgon drove up and tbe body wai delivered and tbe waqon drove cnT auain hurriedly. The pbjslcian. taking tbe corpse by the shoulder, beIn to lug blm Into tbe doorway at the foot of the ip. Just aa to did Hi, aa cmclsl (whose nams is "forgotten") turi.ed tbe corner of the square, and cawb the ifiooniifcht tb young doctor luzging (s be thought) an lut xicated man Into (be bou-e. 11)6 doctor meanwhile Lai got the cor8la tbeahadow and stood I tup sgainst Ibe welt, watting for aiUacce toa-ryit upfcUiis. lie wssin ajJly bumor (bugh!) aud wnile bewabcl lor I o p the official wttkeiup. Tbe doctor called him in, and' Ina fplrit of l.orriblH )st, introduced blm to the corpse as bis friend, Mr. Smith. Tbe
oQclal, never doubting it was a drunken man, bowed and tben the doctor tried to step aside to smile. As he did so THB COETSE LOST TT BALA5CB and fell toward the official. As the dead man's face left the shadow and came into the moonlight, the official was horror-struck to' find " tue cold,' hard face of a corpse glaring into bis. With a cry of borror, he started back and ran, while tbe corpse fell to tbe floor and rolled out on the pavement. Another phase '.of borror. Among the ghastly fears and beliefs that link in the myateries of the mind, is one, that Instances are common -where persons bare been buried alive, while supposed to be dead, aod many incidents bavt been quoted of disturbed coffins, a violent disposition of limbs and features and other points, discovered by the disinterment of the corpse. Bat there bas never yet been a really authenticated cae of burial alive through Inadvertence. Kdgar A Foe, with bis accustomed craving after . tbs horrible, has treated this subiect at length. It is an established fact to at tbe sudden formation of animal gases by decomposition serves In numberless cases to fairly decompose the body by the explosion tbat follows. Several weeks ago, In this city, the body ef a man was disinterred to be removed to another resting place. When the coffin waa reached and the bnmble dwelling-place of tbe dead man opened, a terrible shock awaited the friends. Tbe corpse was found to bave turned over in tbe coffin, and lay with its face down. Tbe friends and relatives were shocked, and tbe horrible suspicion grew that be had been buried alive, and waking up In h's narrow bed, had made a last dying effort to break from the borror that inclosed blm. But naught could succeed, and In agony be turned over and died. Tbe lpstance Is a common one, and Is explained ai we bave stated above. Tbe friends ot tbe deceased suffered needless remorse and grief, for the result was common and natural.
