TVKEKLY BUSINESS REVIEW. PCBUO FI5AN0E". Under the d splayed head line, "How trade is taxed' the New York Bulletin f resents thg following comparative showing of the ordinary expenditures of the "United Slates government in 1874 and I&60. -exclusive of the interest on debt: M74. 18OT. 11,514,619 4J.077.O08 20.708,243 1.I00.KTJ 1,143,108 wr department. It in the son r cm of wealth and those who produce It which are oppressed by these enormous expenditures and the ever recurring burdea ot Interest on the public debt and on the capital of a comparatively few millionaires. The New York Express of Monday afternoon Bays: The events of tbe week in licancial circles were more Important than usual of late. The Union Pacific decision, tbe various reports about the Michigan Central, the revival of the old rumor ol the illneea of Commodore Vanderbilt, and tho alternate warliko and peaceful adricea from Washington in regard to tbe Spanish question have all combined to produce wide fluctuations In Wall street, both up and down. COVJKSB OF TRADE. It is to be feared that writers for the commercial press take too lavorable and hopeful views of the immediate future. The prK3 teems with predictions of a "revival of trade" which have no good foundation in any adequate cause present or prospective. It is true that the first of December is naturally a dull time, in prospect of the holidays, of New Year' settlements and new beginnings In trade after cloeiig up the old year' business. The sudden descent of deal winter upon a large portion of the country closing navigation earlier than visual, baa done much to check activity the first week of tbla month. A close review of the New York markets by tbe Bulletin says: With reference to tbe markets for general merchandise, breadstuff have been dull and depress J in the absence of export demand for wheat, while the Game has been generally true of corn and flour. Ocean ireigbts have been extremely high, and contributed to tbe stagnation. Provisions have been in very fair export demand for through shipment from the West, but here business liai been more ot a speculative character, while values bave fallen off somewhat. Cotton b8 been very dull, with a notable absence of speculative interest, but prices very wellsnstalDoi. Wood opened a little firmer, but closed dull at about former rates. Metals w ere without much activity. Copper wa firm and a little more active. Tin was held for full figures, but iron was very weak and unsettled. The dairy product wi much neglected, with stocks accumulating and f trices weak throughout. Country produce n store vai held a little more firmly, owing te the closing or tire canals?, but a full supply still unsold afloat and on wharf prevented an advance in coss. Petroleum was about steady, but not very active. owing to high freight charges. Naval storei dull, with a shade better tone on spirits turpentine. Hardware quiet and unchanged, except a further important reduction in the cost of wood screws. Hope neglected and prices couamencicg to weaken. Oils firmly held and sparingly offered, with buyers refusing to submit to the raus asked. Tobacco without change. Groceries wero In good demand, and qUo firm for all descriptions. Cry good have exhibited much the same general features daring tbe week as at the corresponding period of previous years. -The season is past for large Kales of any description o! ivinter fibrics far distribution, and the selections by dealers for this purpose have - OBSf)uently been restricted to email quantities of the most nalabl productions. dry aeons. ' ; ' Just et this writing the trade rretcnts a ery Jcllespect. The täte of the w eather in this latitude, warm and drizzling, is de.pressing U tbe cplrit of trade, and weakening to the demand. Tbe week past offers little subject for comment. But little more can be expected of thle season, abating a i possible alight rally at Christmas. Bat tbe season in past which is included under the : term lall tiaJc, aad it rxay be said that it has fallen short of expectations someu lat. OBOCKR1K9. Heavy dealers in oofles are now in Washingt3n for the purpese of discovering, if possible, the temper of congross in regard to' the Unties oncofiea, it being reported that some changes are expected to be made. They are a&xiocs to know what plans to make ior the trade of the future. Raw sugars have been excited tor some -weeks and have advanced accordingly. Oaring November the receipts did not approach the sale, which were 45,000 bogahead, 4,000 boxes and 125.000 bags. There was a decrease in trade ot 61,000 hogsheads, 41,300 boxes and 10SW0 tag, while the supply on the 2d irat. was smaller than that of Jetober let by 77,000 bog she ads, 13,700 boxes and 000 hogsheads melado. The trade for the week pat has been only fair in this city. PROVISIONS. There is very little to be aal d ot the grain trade. It is dull. Indiana is sot fortunate this year. The corn which attained an immense growth did not ripen well, and tarns out light and chaffy.
