General Bartiett declined the democratic nomination for lieutenant-governor. He was one of the best men in the state and would surely have been elected.
The piano manufacturers are bringing their blandishments to bear on Titjlens to secure her endorsement of their pianos. If there is anything in working the wires all of them will be accommodated as usual.
Marshal MacMahon manages to eke out a miserable existence on $198,000 per annum. If there is anything left after our own poor president is provided for, a little of the nation's bounty might be bestowed on Mac. "The Two Orphans" that McKee Rankin assumed the guardianship of will now have a rest. A Pittsburg judge has granted Shook & Palmer a perpetual injunction against his playing there with them at all. Charles Francis Adams has at last secured a nomination for the presidency. A New Jersey club has conferred that distinction upon him. He had not accepted the nomin-

body had heard.
The fire engineers are in convention at New York, and strange to say they have not had a knock down and drag out fight yet. If they should meet at a big fire with

Nice indictments were returned against three of the parties charged with robbing

The friends of Fisher, the rascally ex-as-

"The March of Murderers from the Toombs to the Court House" is the head that the New York Sun artist put over an article describing the arraignment of fifteen persons in the metropolitan courts, all of whom had taken human life. The tramp nuisance has been abruptly abated in Jersey City. All tramps within the corporate limits of that city were required to work upon public improvement and were cared for by the municipality. Can't that plan be put in practice here?
Lynchburg, Va., is congratulating herself that Chief Justice Waite is holding court there. He must be a mild judge compared with teh native judiciary, if there is anything in the name of the place to indicate the way that justice is administered there.
"Tbe worklngmen" met in New York yesterday and enthusiastically applauded the sentiment that any man who controlled over a million of dollars was both a thief and a robber. If they had been millionaires, as some of them might have been if they had paid more attention to business and devoted less time to complaints, they would have hissed the sentiment.
The Hon. L. W. Pond, a leading manufacturer of Worcester, Mass., has mysteriously disappeared, but as he had just col= lested $2,300, and tha tdisappeared at the same time, it is thought that he may yet return to claim the clothes that he left behind him.
The labor reformes of Massachusetts yesterday nominated that horny-handed son of toil, Wendell Phillips, for governor. But even they conceded the wisdom of the choice of the Democratic convention by indorsing the nomination of Gen. Bartlett for lieutenant governor.
The contestants in the Ward Will case are weakening, and a compromise is on the tapis. The principal grounds of the contestant were that the Michigan millionaire was insane on subject of spiritualism, and that be made his will, as he had transacted his business, under the advice of the spirits. The fact that he seemed to have struck a very sensible set of spirits rather overwhelmed the contestant, as the old
man made money all the time.
